Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1426 to 1450, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 15 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1401 to 1500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1428, 1429, 1430, 1431, 1434, 1437, 1438, and 1445 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1449 is missing.

1427. January 1857. Letter from Mr C B Hamilton, Calcutta. Thanks the Governor General for his donation. See also 696, 840, 870, 899, 1403.
1428. January 1857. Letter from Captain R Ouseley, 34th Native Infantry, Landour. Having heard that a collection of hill birds is being made, wishes to send a very curious and rare hill goat to be forwarded with the birds to be presented to Prince Albert. Copy of reply, accepting the goat.
1429. January 1857. Letter from Mr Frederic Wilson, Deyrah. Reports on his arrangements for transporting the Himalayan game birds. He now has 166, and Mr Keene is sending 22. Wilson sends 60 Moonalls, 21 Koklass, 60 Kalleige, 9 Cheer, 3 Argus, 5 Snow Pheasants, 60 Wood Partridges, and 5 Black Partridges. Encloses an account of the expenses incurred. 1430. January to February 1857. Letter from Captain H C James, Officiating Superintendent of Darjeeling. Reports despatch of 94 Himalayan game birds to Calcutta. Will send expenses later. He sends 13 Impayans, 19 Red or Horned Pheasants, 22 Halick [?] or Fowl Pheasants, 20 Greylegged Partridges, and 15 Redlegged Partridges. Copy of reply, the birds have arrived safely in Calcutta. References as for preceding entry (No. 3429).
1431. January to February 1857. Letter from Mr Frederic Wilson, Roorkee. Has despatched his birds and those of Mr Keene to Calcutta. The miscarriage of a letter of Lord W Hay has cost him much unnecessary expense. He will gladly receive any remuneration which the Governor General may see fit to offer. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. References as for see also 1429.
1432. January 1857. Letter from Colonel J Ramsay, Commissary General, Calcutta. Asks for an interview. Copy of note, granted.
1433. January 1857. Letter from Dr W Martin, Superintendent Calcutta Eye Infirmary. His memorial will be sent up to the Governor General. See also 1291, 1291a, 1418.
1434. January 1857. Letter from Major W W Davidson, 32nd Native Infantry, Commanding 16th Irregular Cavalry, Rawalpindi. Asks to go on special service with the Persian Expedition, as a Brigadier of Cavalry in the Arab Levies, and encloses a printed copy of his memorial to the Honourable Court of Directors, with their reply. Copy of reply, no prospect of using his services in Persia.
1435. December to January 1857. Letter from Dr E D Evezard, in medical charge of Mergui. Applies for a post in the Pegu, or Tenasserim Commissions. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 662.
1436. January 1857. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Forwards the Durbar Account for Dec 1856 (no longer enclosed).
1437. January 1857. Letter from Dr T Thomson MD, Superintendent of the Honourable Court's Botanical Garden. Repeats the substance of his interview with the Private Secretary on the subject of the Garden. See also 1438.

1439. January 1857. Letter from Dr T Murray MD, Surgeon (Uncovenanted) in medical charge of 7th Regiment of Infantry, Gwalior Contingent, Camp, Mehidpore. Asks to be employed with the army in Persia. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, refused.
1440. January 1857. Memorandum about Dr R H Irvine MD, Kurrachee. Copy of letter to Irvine, his memorial has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
1441. January 1857. Letter from Mr W Macartney, Head of the Police Department, Colombo. Asks to be employed in any scheme for organizing an effective police force for India. Copy of reply, no definite plans for re-organisation, it is very likely that his services would be used. See also 1727.
1442. January 1857. Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Commissioner of the Rajshalye Division, Rampore Banleah. Asks to be Resident at Hyderabad. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1545.
1443. January 1857. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Barrackpore Park. About the deer fence. See also 1408, 1421, 1497, 1583, 1868.
1444. January to February 1857. Letter from Mr F N Maltby, Judicial Commissioner, Hyderabad, Assigned Districts Bolarum. Suggests Captain G C Collyer of the Madras Engineers Deputy Chief Engineer, to officiate in the absence of Colonel Henderson, Chief Engineer, it is necessary that there be no delay. Copy of reply about this. See also 1465.
1445. January 1857. Letter from Mr J C Sweeny, Assistant in the Accountant General's Office, Calcutta. Submits a proposal for substituting air for steam for the propelling of locomotives, and asks to borrow a small spare locomotive of the East India Railway Company. Copy of reply, refused.
1446. February 1857. Letter from Mrs Sophia Matilda Moscrop, widow of Henry Moscrop, surgeon, Calcutta. Applies for promotion for her son, 1st grade Preventive Officer. Copy of reply, not the business of the Governor General. See also 61, 103, 137, 651, 3294.
1447. January to February 1857. Letter from Captain W McNeile, 5th Native Infantry, late Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Umballa. Applies to be re-appointed to the Punjab Commission. Copy of letter about him to Mr Edmonstone. See also 781, 1051, 1257, 1390, 1556, 1595, 1623.
