Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1452 to 1475, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 15 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1401 to 1500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1460, 1461, and 1471 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1451 and 1466 are missing.
1452. January 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H J Stannus, 5th Light Cavalry, Meerut. Sends a letter from Sir James Emerson Tennent, on his behalf, and asks for a staff appointment after his regimental promotion. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1492, 2435, 3076.
1453. January 1857. Letter from Captain C L Showers, 14th Native Infantry, Assistant Agent to the Governor General for the states of Rajpootana, Camp in the Bhurtpoor territory. Returns thanks for the office of Officiating Political Agent at Maywar. Copy of earlier letter, offering him this post.
1454. January 1857. Letter from Baboo Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Asks for a recommendation.
1454a. February 1857. Copy of letter to Captain J Woodley, Superintendent of Government Yacht. Bringing to his notice the negligence of the men in charge of the Governor General's boats.
1455. January 1857. Letter from Mr J R B Bennett, Calcutta. Asks permission to wait on the Private Secretary. See also 1475, 1515, 2436, 2437.
1456. January 1857. Letter from Captain M J Battye, 27 Bombay Native Infantry, Bombay. Reports his return to India and asks for authority to resume his appointment as Assistant Resident at Baroda. Asking whether officers of Ordnance Commissariat have been counted as absent on staff employ, what number of absentees are allowed in the artillery regiments, and how many are now absent from the Madras regiments.

1465. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel W E Baker, Calcutta. About assistants for Colonel Henderson; either Lieutenant Blagman or Lieutenant Goddard. Captain Collyer is not to act for Henderson, as Henderson's absence will be short. Copy of letter about this. See also 1444.

1468. January to February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant W T Somerville, Bengal Artillery, Almorah. With a letter from his uncle, Mr Thomson Hankey, asks for civil employment. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book No. 319.
1469. February 1857. Letter from Dr N Chevers, Calcutta. Sends 2 copies of the Life of the late Dr J R Bedford, (not enclosed).
1470. January to February 1857. Letter from Baboo Joykissen Mookerjea, Ooterparah. Sends a pamphlet on the new sale law Bill (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1471. January to April 1857. Letter from Major H D Abbott, 31 Madras Light Infantry, Brigade Major of the Hyderabad Contingent. Submits a proposal for the raising of a Brigade of Cavalry in the Deccan for service in Persia. Copy of reply, improbable that any more cavalry will be sent to Persia. See also 1530, 1533.
