Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1476 to 1500a, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 15 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1401 to 1500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1483, 1489, 1490 and 1491 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1478, 1479 and 1486 are missing.
1476. January to February 1857. Letter from Colonel H M Durand, Calcutta. States that Brigadier Russell, now in Calcutta, will be able to give information about the European Troops in Pegu etc.
1477. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant B Wyld, Calcutta. Having once before suffered from the jungles of Cuttack and Goomsoor, is apprehensive that he will run great risk in his present appointment as 4th class Executive Engineer at Moulmein and Mergui; and wishes other employment. Copy of reply, refused.
1480. January to February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant C R Clemons, 3rd Madras European Regiment and Executive Officer, Public Works Department, Palgantcherry. Asks for any appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 475, 643.
1481. February 1857. Letter from Mr P W Le Geyt, Alipore. Encloses a letter from Lieutenant J Black, 1st class Assistant Commissioner in Oudh, asking permission to resign in hopes of being employed in the Political Department in Bombay. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Black may resign. See also 944, 1029, 1266.
1482. February 1857. Copy of reply to J Franklin Esquire, Secretary to Marine Board, Madras. Application noted.
1483. February 1857. Letter from Mr R Cameron, Secrorah. Promises to abide by instructions for his visit to Nepal. He states the resources of Oudh; wishes to obtain from Nepal hides, beeswax, borax, etc. Copy of earlier letter to Cameron about his visit to Nepal. See also 1374, 1381, 1424.
1484. February 1857. Letter from Captain E H Power, 7th Madras Cavalry, Deputy Judge Advocate General, Madras Army, Kamptee. Asks for a civil appointment in Nagpore. Copy of private reply by Private Secretary advising him not to apply to the Governor General for a post until his case is decided. See also 1485, 1547.

1487. January to February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant A G St John Mildmay 3rd Bombay Europeans, Assistant to the Governor General's Agent in Rajpootana, Aboo. Sends 2 letters to the Governor General (no longer enclosed). Copies of 2 replies, acknowledgements. Governor General's Book Number 318. See also 1354, 1375.
1488. February 1857. Letter from Mr T D Forsyth, Civil Service Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab.
Asks to be Deputy Commissioner at Simla. Copy of reply, application noted.
1489. January to February 1857. Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner, Simla.
Reports the despatch from Umballa of 102 Himalayan birds, being 41 partridges, 13 Chikor, 7 Plaee [?], 7 Callege, 20 Munals, 9 Chehur, 3 Argus, and 2 Snow Pheasants. Copy of reply, 82 of his birds have arrived safely, and in excellent condition. Some of the birds may be sent to Sydney, as Sir W Denison wishes to experiment with their introduction into Australia. 1490. February to March 1857. Letter from Major H Ramsay, Commissioner of Kumaoon, Nyne Tal
Reports the despatch to Futtehghur of 65 Himalayan birds, being 53 pheasants and 7 Plura, i.e. 4 Langees (?), 5 Cheere, 4 Huklas, 7 Plura, 45 Munals. Copy of reply, the birds have arrived safely. References as for the preceding No. 1489.
1491. February 1857. Letter from Mr H G Keene, Superintendent of Dehra Dhoon. Submits a list of the birds etc. despatched by him in charge of Mr Wilson to Roorkee, where they were shipped to Calcutta, with account of expenses; being 6 Munals or Impey Pheasants, 3 Plura or Tree Partridges, 10 Pheasants, 1 Argus, 2 Koklahs or Green Pigeons, 7 Chikores or Red Legged Partridges, 1 Tahir or wild goat. Copy of reply, forwarding expenses; the birds have not yet appeared.

1493. February 1857. Letter from Baboos Ram Cally Banerjee and Burrda Caunt Banerjee, Calcutta. Asks for money to study in the Sanskrit College.
1494. February 1857. Letter from Baboo Govind Chunder Bagchee, Calcutta. Asks for money to continue his studies. Copy of reply, refused.
1495. December 1856. Letter from Mr A Mackenzie, Madras Railway Company, London. Recommends Lieutenant W Davison of 1st European Bengal Fusiliers.
1496. February 1857. Letter from Baboo Prannauth Bose, Calcutta. Asks for an audience to present an appeal. Copy of reply, submit appeal in writing. See also 78, 156, 157, 1478, 1519.
