Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1501 to 1525a, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 16 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1501 to 1600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1506 and 1515 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1514 and 1519 are missing.
1501. January to February 1857. Letter from Mr B P Singer, Extra Assistant, Nagpur. Asks for promotion. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General can make no promise. See also 1594, 1699, 1778.
1502. January to February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel G Lawrence, Political Agent, Meywar, Neemuch. Forwards with his recommendation an application form from Dr H Cotes, Assistant Surgeon, Bombay Establishment, for the medical charge of Neemuch.
1503. January to February 1857. Letter from Captain C Hervey, 2nd Bombay European Light Infantry, on board the 'Semiramis'. To Lady Canning; at present Aide de Camp to General Outram, he asks for a diplomatic post in Persia, or General Superintendent of the Thuggee Department. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Also draft reply.
1504. February 1857. Letter from Major A P Bouverie, 35th Native Infantry, Aide de Camp to the Governor General. Would like to be considered for the Maywar or Madwah Agency, if either becomes vacant.
1505. February 1857. Letter from Mr G Edmonstone, Calcutta. Sends the Minutes of the Council on the negotiations at Peshawar and their result. Memorandum about this. (Minutes no longer enclosed).
1506. January to February 1857. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. Forwards some photographs of the new Gaekward (no longer enclosed) Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
1507. January to February 1857. Letter from Captain M J Battye, 27th Bombay Native Infantry, Assistant Resident at Baroda, Bombay. Asks for a temporary appointment in Bombay without prejudice to his appointment at Baroda as his wife has cholera. Copies of 3 telegraphs to Battye; 1 telegraph from him. Copy of reply, request refused. He must either return to Baroda, or resign his appointment. Telegraph Messages received number 61, 64; Telegraph Messages Sent number 68, 71, 73. 1508. February 1857. Copy of a letter to Colonel Birch C B. About Mr MacAndrew.
1509. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant B C Hitchins, Madras Artillery, Saugor. Asks for an appointment as Executive Engineer in Public Works Department in Hyderabad or Mysore. Copy of reply, he must pass an examination before he can take a post in the Public Works Department. Also note about this. Register Nos. 1046, 1306, 1678.
1510. February 1857. Letter from Captain C B Young, Civil Architect, Calcutta. Forwards completion certificate for alterations to the Governor General's stable and cook room at Calcutta (no longer enclosed).
1511. February 1857. Letter from the Honourable J P Grant, Member of Council, Calcutta. Forwards with his recommendation printed extracts of an official memorandum about Major Davidson, Resident at Baroda, who wishes to be appointed to Hyderabad.
1512. January to February 1857. Letter from the Reverend J St C Wooltorton, Assistant Superintendent, Bombay Education Society Press. Forwards a book for the Governor General (not enclosed) Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1513. February 1857. Letter from Mrs G J Stevens, Madras. Asks for employment for her husband, Brevet Captain A Stevens, 18th Madras Native Infantry (Copy of reply, application noted.) See also 1592.
1515. February 1857. Letter from Mr J R B Bennett, Post Master General of Bengal, on board the 'Blenheim'. About the accusation of his unsatisfactory supervision of the Jessore and Barrasat Dawk Line. See also 1475, 1455, 2436, 2437.
1516. February 1857. Letter from the Reverend J J Carshore, Chaplain of Annurkully, Lahore. Asks the Governor General to subscribe to his intended publication the 'Bengal Chaplain's Vade-Mecum'. Printed notice about this. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 3 copies. See also 1620, 2562.
1517. February 1857. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Park, Barrackpore. Sends with his recommendation a letter from the Head Master of the Barrackpore School, asking permission to erect a house within the school premises for the water-bearer attached to the school. Copy of reply, there may be a building in which to store water, but no residence for the water-bearer or any other person.
1518. February 1857. Letter from the Reverend G H Johnstone, Calcutta. Asks for some professional ecclesiastical appointment for 2 or 3 years. Copy of reply, the Bishop makes all such appointments. Copy of another letter about this. Copy of letter of introduction of March 1857 to Sir W Denison K C B, Sydney, for Mr Johnstone. Register Nos. 1549, 1761, 1872.
1520. February 1857. Letter from Major R Strachey, Under Secretary to Public Works Department, Calcutta. Forwards copy of a reply to Mr Crawford for information of Private Secretary and returns 11 letters exchanged between Crawford and Private Secretary (letters no longer enclosed). 1521. January to February 1857. Letter from Mr C H Coltrell, Hadley. Recommends Captain G Verner, 9th Native Infantry, Superintendent of Cachar.
1522. February 1857. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. Forwards a list of Covenanted civil servants with their salaries and an appendix of military officers and others holding civil employment on November last (no longer enclosed).
1523. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J De C Sinclair, Madras Artillery, Bombay. Sends a letter from Lord Haddington to the Governor General. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Governor General's Book number 325.
1524. February 1857. Letter from the Reverend C J Quartley, Chaplain of Barrackpore. Wishes to know if any alteration is to be made in the times of Services on Sunday evenings. Copy of reply, services to be held at 6:30 pm from 1 Mar to 31 Oct, as is usual during these months.
