Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1526 to 1550, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 16 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1501 to 1600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1532, 1536, 1538, 1540 and 1541 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1533 and 1548 are missing.
1526. February 1857. Letter from Major R H Miles, Invalid Establishment. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary.
1527. February 1857. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Officiating Post Master General, Calcutta. About the Bullock Train to Futteghur, for a passenger the fare is 15 Rupees with luggage.
1528. February 1857. Letter from Major R H Miles Invalid Establishment, Calcutta. Forwards a statement of his case and asks for an appointment with the civil or military authorities. Copy of reply, suitable employment not probable.
1529. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant F W Brodie, 21st Native Infantry, Officiating Commandant of Cavalry, United Malva Contingent, Mehidpore. Asks if his letter of November has been received. Copy of reply, earlier letter was received, apology. Governor General's Book number 238. See also 1141.
1530. February 1857. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch C B, Calcutta. States that Captain H D Abbott, Brigade Major, Hyderabad Contingent, is not related to the Colonels of that name at Calcutta, and returns an enclosure.
1531. February to March 1857. Letter from Mr E C Caldwell, Combasonum Tanjore. Sends a letter from Major Macdonald, and believing that some of his friends in Ceylon have already told the Private Secretary his views, does not repeat them, but wishes the Private Secretary's assistance in furtherance of his views. 2 copies of reply about his prospects in the Educational Department Calcutta, posts are in the gift of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. 1532. February 1857. Letter from Lord William Hay, Superintendent of Hill States, Camp, Umballa. Suggests that £70 or £75 would be a most liberal remuneration for Mr Wilson, with an expression of thanks from the Governor General. Copy of earlier letter to Lord William Hay, asking for his opinion.
1534. February 1857. Letter from Mr G H Quinton, Colaba, Bombay. Applies on behalf of his nephew, Mr R H Atkinson, 3rd Officer on Honourable Company's Ship 'Krishna' for transfer to the Indian Navy. Copy of reply, under the proposed amalgamation officers of the Bengal Marine who have served a certain length of time will be admitted. Register Nos. 1566, 1698.
1535. February 1857. Letter from Captain H C James, 32nd Native Infantry, Officiating Superintendent of Darjeeling. Asks to become permanently appointed as Superintendent. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1256.
1536. February 1857. Letter from Mrs Helen Jervis, Barrackpore. Forwards a volume of the 'Indian Review' which contains a Memoir of her father, Dr Strong, whose case is now before the council (not enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1276, 1572, 1593.
1537. February 1857. Letter from Dr F G Vos, Secretary, District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Submits report on the petition of Baboo Sib Chunder Shah for money. See also 1388.
1538. February 1857. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore Division. Submits an estimate for a deer fence in the Barrackpore Park. Copy of reply, authorising this; copy of earlier letter. See also 1408, 1421, 1443, 1497, 1868.
1539. February 1857. Letter from Mr D G Nicolson, late Assistant Commissioner in the Tenasserim Provinces, Calcutta. About his removal from office, asks to be restored or given another post. With testimonials. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1575.
1540. February 1857. Letter from Mr W G Probyn, Officiating Magistrate of Furruckabad. Advises the despatch of a number of hill pheasants forwarded to him by Major Ramsay. Copy of reply, the birds arrived in good condition.
1541. February 1857. Letter from Dr T Moore, Assistant Surgeon, 63rd Native Infantry, Soorie Beerbhoom. Suggests that he goes to Mauritius to report on the operation of the quarantine laws there. Copy of reply, application noted.
1542. February 1857. Letter from Baboos Krishno Coomar, Lahoree and Company, Serampore. Submits a petition (no longer enclosed).
1543. February 1857. Letter from Dr J M Honigberger M D, Calcutta. Forwards a copy of his work (not enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1544. February 1857. Letter from Major L H Hamilton, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Camp Ramgunge, Zillah Rungpore. Asks whether anything has been settled about the appointment of an officer to the Assam Commission in place of Captain Dalton. Copy of reply about this, and about social life in Calcutta. 1545. February 1857. Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Commissioner of the Rajshahye Division, Camp, Rungpore. Asks to be appointed in place of Sir Robert Hamilton, who has been promoted. Copy of reply, refused. See also 1442, 1671.
1546. February to March 1857. Letter from Mr J S Judge, Attorney at Law, Calcutta. Wishes his son C N Judge, to be appointed to the Burdwan Division. Copy of reply about this. See also 1633.
1547. February 1857. Letter from Captain E H Power, 7th Madras Cavalry, Deputy Judge Advocate General, Kamptee. Withdraws his application for civil employment on the Private Secretary's advice. See also 1484, 1485.
1549. February 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. About the Reverend G H Johnstone's application for an ecclesiastical appointment. See also 1518, 1761, 1872.
1550. February 1857. Letter from N Syed Meer Mehudee, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his letter asking for a ticket to the Government Durbar. Copy of reply, apply to the Foreign Secretary.
