‘No. 16 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 1552 to 1575

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1552 to 1575, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 16 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1501 to 1600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Number 1557 has a red cross on it, to indicate that it ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1554 and 1563 are missing.
1552. February 1857. Letter from Mr W J Moore, Hooghly. Regrets to learn from 'The Englishman' that Lord Canning is shortly to be relieved by Lord Elgin, and asks about his appeal, and for a post.
1553. February 1857. Letter from Mrs Jane Louisa Dennison, Hooghly. Asks for a favourable hearing of her brother, Mr Moore's case.
1555. February to May 1857. Letter from Mr W Vincent, Collinjerah, Jounpore. Recommends an uncle of his, a painter, Mr Claude Angier. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary will visit Mr Angier in the future.
1556. February 1857. Letter from Captain W McNeile, 5th Native Infantry, Late Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Umballa. Enquires about his reappointment to the Punjab Commission. Copy of reply about this. Also draft reply. See also 781, 1051, 1257, 1390, 1447, 1595, 1623.
1557. February to March 1857. Letter from Captain R Ouseley, 34th Native Infantry, on leave, Landour. Sends information about the Tahir or wild goat he has sent. Copy of reply, the Tahir arrived in reasonable condition, the boat had unfortunately left for England before it came.
1558. February 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Moulmein. Suggests a change in the policy now adopted in Pegu.
1559. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant P Stewart, Officiating Superintendent Electric Telegraph, Calcutta. Replies about non-delivery of certain messages to the Governor General and Private Secretary. Copy of earlier letter about this; copy of reply. See also 1460, 1461.
1560. February to March 1857. Letter from Major R R W Ellis, 23rd Native Infantry, Assistant Political Agent at Bundelcund Nagod Baghelakhand. Asks to be made Officiating Governor General's Agent in Central India in place of Sir R Hamilton; statement of his services. Copy of reply, refused. See also 009, 4479.
1561. February 1857. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, 2nd Class Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, Googaria. Renews his application for a higher appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book number 54; see also 294, 365, 375, 455, 479, 659, 775, 842, 1622, 1666.
1562. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant R Stewart, Commandant Kookie Levy, Cachar. Forwards a copy of his pamphlet on the resources and agriculture of Cachar. Copy of reply, the pamphlet was not enclosed.
1564. February 1857. Letter from Captain C W F Whish, 43rd Madras Native Infantry, Vizagapatun. Applies for employment in either the Mysore or Hyderabad Commissions, or in the Public Works Department of Mysore. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1613.
1565. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J H Jenkins, 44th Native Infantry, Agra. The number of officers absent from his regiment has been reduced, renews his application for staff appointment. Copy of earlier reply to Jenkins.
1566. February 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. Replies about Mr E Caldwell and Mr R H Atkinson. See also 1531, 1723, 1773, 1893.
1567. February 1857. Letter from Sahib Allum Sultan Timoor Mirza, alias Sultan Tazul Moolk Chundernay Chandernagore. Asks for an interview. Copy of reply, please submit business in writing. See also 1848, 1889, 2318, 2869.
1568. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, 1st Bombay Grenadiers Native Infantry on special duty in Kattiawar. Having learnt that Captain Battye has received an appointment under the Government of Bombay applies for the vacant appointment as Assistant Resident at Baroda. Copy of reply, his application has been happily anticipated. See also 530, 727, 838, 1578.
1569. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J Gordon, 1st Bombay Grenadiers Native Infantry, Camp, Baroda. Submits a letter to the Governor General and asks to be Assistant Resident at Baroda (letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, the vacancy has been filled. Governor General's Book number 345.
1570. February 1857. Letter from the Reverend John L Harris, Secretary, to the Union Chapel, Calcutta. Asks for a contribution to the chapel. Copy of reply, refused. Note from Mr Beadon.
1571. February 1857. Letter from Mr C Macleod, Extra Preventive Officer, Custom House, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his appeal for money. Copy of reply, enquiries are being made. Register Nos. 1548, 1577, 1657.
1572. February 1857. Letter from Mrs Helen Jervis, Barrackpore. Asks that the 'Indian Review' containing a memorial of her father Dr Strong may be forwarded to General Low. See also 1276, 1536, 1593.
1573. February 1857. Letter from Lieutenant T C Alban, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Resident at Baroda. Asks to be employed under the Government of India. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, Captain Battye has resigned, Lieutenant Barton is appointed and will continue on the Kattyar Enquiry, and Alban is to continue to officiate for him. See also 364, 1079, 1681.
1574. February 1857. Letter from Captain D Robertson, Master attendant, Calcutta. Forwards a letter from the Agent of the Peninsular and Oriental Company stating that a vessel cannot be spared from Bombay.
1574a. February 1857. Copy of a letter to Mr D Edmond. His services as a winder of clocks at Government House are no longer required.
1575. February 1857. Letter from Mr D G Nicholson, late Assistant Commissioner in the Tenasserim Provinces, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the submission of his testimonials to the Governor General. See also 1539.
