Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1576 to 1600, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 16 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1501 to 1600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1589, 1590, and 1591 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1588 is missing.

1577. February to March 1857. Letter from Mr C Macleod, Extra Preventive Officer, Custom House, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his earlier letter (2 letters). Also note about this. See also 1548, 1571, 1657.
1578. February 1857. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. Recommends Lieutenant Barton as Assistant Resident at Baroda, and Lieutenant Alban as an Extra Assistant there. Copy of reply confirming this. See also 727, 446, 653, 838, 1647.
1579. February 1857. Letter from the Reverend C W Cahusac, Assistant Chaplain, Calcutta. Asks permission to occupy one of the Government Bungalows at Barrackpore for 2 or 3 weeks. Copies of 2 replies granting permission.
1580. February 1857. Letter from Mr O W Malet, Judge of Beerbhoom. Asks for an audience.
1581. February to March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant R N Taylor, 5th Madras Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner, Raichore. Applies to be Deputy Commissioner of Southern Berar, or various other posts. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 776, 783, 1093.
1582. February 1857. Letter from the Reverend C W Cahusac, Assistant Chaplain, Calcutta. Returns thanks for permission to use a bungalow at Barrackpore. See also 1579.
1583. February 1857. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, C B, Secretary, to Government, Military Department. Replies about Mrs Pinson, who has applied for aid from Lady Canning. Also letter from Mrs Pinson. See also 241, 272, 1625.
1584. February to March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J M Graham, 27th Native Infantry, Adjutant Ramghur Battalion, Dorundah, Chota Nagpore. Asks for civil employment in the South West Frontier Agency. Copy of reply, apply to Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. Governor General's Book number 242, See also 1616.
1585. February to March 1857. Letter from Captain James Flint, 38th Madras Native Infantry, Singapore. Applies to be Superintendent of Convicts and Roads at Singapore. Copy of reply, post is the gift of Government of Straits Settlements. See also 1890, 2152, 3045.
1586. February to March 1857. Letter from Baboo Chunder Mohun Mookerje, Allahabad. Asks to be recommended for employment, with testimonials in 2 languages. Copy of reply, such appointments lie with the local authorities.
1587. February to March 1857. Letter from the Reverend P Percival, Presidency College, Madras. Asks advice as to how to obtain a chaplaincy for his son Samuel.
1589. March 1857. Letter from Mr J C Thompson, Calcutta. Proposes a method of sending Mr Wilson's birds home to England (3 papers). Copy of reply about this.
1590. February to March 1857. Letter from Lord William Hay, Simla. Reports he has about 40 more birds at Simla.
1591. March 1857. Letter from Mr J M Lowis, Officiating Magistrate of Patna. Acknowledges the receipt of a telegraph and has despatched the birds. Copy of reply, that the birds have arrived.
1592. February to March 1857. Letter from Mrs G J Stevens, Madras. Encloses an application from her husband Brevet Captain Arthur Stevens, 18 Madras Native Infantry, for civil employment in the Mysore, Hyderabad or Nagpore Commissions. See also 1513.
1593. March 1857. Letter from Major General the Honourable J Low, Member of Council, Alipore
Asks the Private Secretary to send a note and book to Mrs Jervis at Barrackpore. Copy of earlier letter, sending General Low the book. See also 1276, 1536, 1572.
1594. February 1857. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Replies about Mr Singer, an Extra Assistant in Nagpore. See also 1501, 1699, 1778.
1595. February 1857. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. About appointments in Oudh, suggests Captain McNeile for a vacancy there, or Lieutenant Clarke. See also 781, 1051, 1257, 1390, 1447, 1556, 1623, 1643.
1596. March 1857. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. Forwards the Durbar Account for January (no longer enclosed).
1597. February 1857. Letter from Dr J Gregory Vos, Secretary to the District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Acknowledges the Governor General's donation to the Society. Copy of earlier letter, sending 250 Rupees.
1598. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant H H Goodwyn, Engineers, Honorary Secretary, to Industrial School, Calcutta. Asks the Governor General and Lady Canning to attend an exhibition at the school and present the prizes. Copy of reply, declined.
1599. February to March 1857. Letter from Major L H Hamilton, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Camp Jilpigoree. About an appointment to the Commission in Assam. Copy of 2 letters about this and other matters from the Private Secretary. See also 1310, 1367, 1544, 1721, 1809, 1876 1918, 1909.
1600. February 1857. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore Division. Forwards completion certificate for making repairs to the Bear's Den in the Park (no longer enclosed).
