Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1626 to 1653, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 17 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1601 to 1700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1627, 1629, 1630, 1631, 1635, 1642, 1648, and 1651 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

1627. March 1857. Letter from Mr H Berners, Attorney at Law, Calcutta. Acknowledges the Governor General's subscription to the Memorial to Captain Thompson C B. See also 1617.
1628. March 1857. Letter from Major G Verner 9th Native Infantry, Superintendent of Cachar. Thanks the Governor General for his appointment as Acting Commissioner in Arracan. References. Copy of earlier letter that he is to be offered the post. See also 1521.
1629. March 1857. Letter from Sir John Lawrence, K C B, Chief Commissioner of the Punjab Camp. Has applied for more civil officers, as the Punjab is below strength by five men, and as by the recent resolution of the Government, the proportion of civilians and military men in civil employ must be equalised, the vacancies will have to be filled up by civilians; he would prefer some of the civilians who have come out to India on the new system.
1630. March 1857. Letter from Sir H M Lawrence, K C B, new Chief Commissioner, Oudh, Agra. Will not now go to Kussowlee, but to Lucknow, where he hopes to find full instructions; proposes to visit the different stations to meet the officials after a week at Lucknow. Has had much discussion with the Sudder Board, the Commissioner of Customs and others on Bhurtpore and Oudh salt, and fears that recent arrangements may cause loss of revenue. Asks that Colonel Edwardes be told of his movements. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, and congratulation on his new post. Copy of letter to Lieutenant Colonel Edwardes.
1631. March 1857. Letter from Mr H G Keene, Superintendent of Dehra Dun. Acknowledges a draft for the expenses in connection with the Himalayan birds. 1 anna stamp.
1632. March 1857. Letter from Mr W G Sinclair, Assistant in the Bengal Accountant's Office, Calcutta. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, refused.
1633. March 1857. Letter from Mr J S Judge, Attorney at Law, Calcutta. Thanks the Private Secretary for his efforts on behalf of his son, who has made up his mind to join the Sappers. Letter from Colonel Baker advising this. See also 1546.
1634. March 1857. Letter from Mr Burroughs, Interpreter of Vernacular languages in the Calcutta Police. Asks for a recommendation for an appointment. Copy of reply, refused.
1635. March 1857. Letter from Mr W H Abbott, Acting Secretary to the Indigo Planters' Association, Calcutta. Forwards a printed copy of the petition of the British subjects in Calcutta, and the Mofussil Districts of the Presidency of Fort William, not in the service of the East India Company, about the proposed simplification of the legal system. Also copy of an address to be read to the Governor General by the deputation. See also 1604, 1605, 1606, 1609.
1636. February to March 1857. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Baroda. Encloses a letter from the Residency Surgeon advising him to leave Gujarat for a time for his health; he proposes to apply for 15 months leave. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. 1637. March 1857. Letter from Colonel H Goodwyn, Superintending Engineer, Lower Provinces, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the information about the French floods. Copy of earlier letter to him. See also 820.
1638. February to March 1857. Letter from Captain E M Ryan, 20th Native Infantry, Assistant Commissioner, Mergui. Asks for a transfer to a more civilised part of the world. Copy of private letter from the Private Secretary advising him not to submit his letter to the Governor General, particularly as there is to be a new Commissioner in place of Bogle.
1640. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant C L Yeoman, Madras Artillery, Madras Club. Forwards a letter from the Right Honourable Vernon Smith, and states his services in the Crimea, with a view to being employed in some expeditionary or Irregular force in Bengal. 1641. March 1857. Letter from Captain E Cannon, 17th Madras Native Infantry. Forwards a letter from Rear Admiral Arbuthnot and asks for another appointment, at present he is Rifle Instructor at Bangalore. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book number 357.
1642. March 1857. Letter from Mr Tayler, Commissioner of Patna. Forwards a pamphlet about the Behar Industrial Institution, which has been so misrepresented that he has been obliged to send a letter to the Home Secretary about it. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1679, 1694.

1651. January 1857. Letter from Captain J C James Officiating Superintendent of Darjeeling. Has dispatched 94 pheasants and a deer for the Zoological Society. These are 13 Impeyan, 23 Red, 22 Kalich pheasants, and 21 Grey legged and 15 Red legged partridges.
1652. March 1857. Letter from Mr G Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. About Colonel Bogle's selection of an officer for Youngzalee. Lieutenant Chase whom Major Phayre proposed was removed from office for refusing to pay the amount of his subscription to the Wellington Memorial.
