Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1655 to 1675, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 17 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1601 to 1700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1655, 1658, 1663 and 1670 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1656 and 1660 are missing.
1655. March 1857. Letter from Mr Frederick Wilson, Chounjallah. Returns thanks for a draft sent to him for his expenses in collecting pheasants. 1/2 anna stamp.
1657. March 1857. Letter from Dr Vos, Calcutta. Has been informed that Mr Macleod has recovered and returned to his duties, and does not wish his case to be taken up. See also 1548, 1571, 1577, 1646.
1658. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant G Baillie, Officiating Superintendent Roorkee Workshops, Roorkee. Forwards a bill for cages made for Mr Wilson. Copy of reply, sending money; copy of earlier letter.
1659. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant H H Armstrong, Adjutant 53rd Native Infantry, Cawnpore. Asks to be made Commandant of the Escort with the Resident at Katmandu. With testimonials. Copy of reply, the vacancy has been filled.
1661. March 1857. Letter from the Reverend C W Cahusac, Officiating Chaplain of Barrackpore. Has vacated the Government Bungalow at Barrackpore, and thanks the Governor General for its use. See also 1579, 1582.
1662. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant C J Stuart, 57th Madras Native Infantry, Trichinopoly. Asks for staff appointment in the Mysore Commission or in the Cavalry branch of the Hyderabad Contingent. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, refused.
1663. March 1857. Letter from Mr F D Lucas, Gondah, Oudh. Gives an account of Mr Boileau's death, who was killed by a dacoit called Fuzzle Ali. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Governor General's Book number 295, 296, 356, See also 1423.
1664. March 1857. Letter from Mrs E Boaz, Union Chapel, Calcutta. Acknowledges Lady Canning's donation to the London Missionary Society. See also 1639.
1666. March 1857. Letter from Mrs E Fraser, Googaria. Writes on behalf of her husband Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, 2nd class Assistant Commissioner in the Punjab, for a higher appointment. Copy of reply, Captain Fraser was fortunate to obtain civil employment at all.
1667. March 1857. Letter from Mr James Stuart, Honorary Treasurer to the Calcutta City Mission.
Forwards a report of the mission. Copy of reply, postponing decision about subscription. Copy of later reply forwarding 200 Rupees. See also 224.
1668. March 1857. Letter from the Honourable D Eliott, Calcutta. Asks for an interview to apply for leave to England on medical certificate.
1669. March 1857. Letter from Captain J K Couper, 2nd Native Infantry, Officiating Deputy Superintendent, Central Stud Buxar. Applies for the permanent position. Copy of reply, application noted, no vacancy at present. Governor General's Book number 343, 344.
1670. March 1857. Letter from Mr Seth Apcar, Calcutta. Sends an account of the 'Lightning' steamer. Memorandum about this.
1671. March 1857. Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Commissioner of the Rajshahye Division, Rampore Banleah. Applies for promotion. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere with the Lieutenant Governor's promotions. See also 1442, 1545, 1711.
1672. February to March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant G P Falconnet, Madras Engineers, Executive Engineer, Meeaday. Forwards a letter from Mr Alexander Q C, and asks to be appointed Executive Engineer 2nd class in Burma. (letter from Mr Alexander no longer enclosed) Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book number 372; See also 986.
1673. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant G C Finlay, 2nd Madras Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Commissioner Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Ellichpore. Accepted his Officiating appointment in the belief that he would be found a permanent place in the Commission; now must rejoin his regiment; this will put him further into debt; asks for permanent employment. Copy of reply, asking him why he is to leave his Officiating appointment. See also 293, 487, 717, 826, 1735, 1752, 1754, 1788.
1674. March 1857. Letter from Mr E Roer, Senior Intendant in Sulkeah Salt Golohs, Howrah. Having to deliver a verbal message to the Governor General from Baron Alexander von Humboldt, asks for an audience. Copy of reply, please submit business in writing, or defer request.
1675. March 1857. Letter from Mr C Crichton, Secretary to the Uncovenanted Service Family Pension Fund, Calcutta. Forwards a report on the fund (no longer enclosed) Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
