‘No. 17 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 1676 to 1700a

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1676 to 1700a, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 17 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1601 to 1700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1676a, 1679, 1680, 1688, 1693, 1694 and 1695 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1686 and 1692 are missing.

1676a. March 1857. Copy of a letter to Captain Caldbeck, Commanding Peninsular and Oriental Company Steamer 'Bentinck'. Thanking him for his exertions in speeding up the despatch of Her Majesty's 34th Regiment from Rangoon.
1677. March 1857. Telegraphic message from G H M Ricketts Esquire, Officiating Deputy Commissioner 2nd class at Loodiana. Offering himself as a candidate for the vacancy in Oudh caused by Mr Boileau's death. Also letter about this, from Ricketts, and 2 letters from Edmonstone.
1678. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant B C Hitchins, Madras Artillery, Saugor. Is on the point of obtaining surveying and engineering certificates, and asks for an appointment as 2nd or 3rd class Executive Engineer in Mysore. Copy of reply, no vacancy. Note from Colonel Baker. See also 1509.
1679. March 1857. Letter from Mr J B Elliott, late of the Civil Service, Patna. States that the contributions to Mr Tayler's educational scheme have been extorted from the natives. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement. See also 1642, 1680, 1694.

1681. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant H Alban, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Resident at Baroda. Returns thanks for his Officiating appointment. See also 364, 1079, 1573.
1682. March 1857. Letter from Captain H Man, 49th Madras Native Infantry, Executive Officer and Superintendent of Convicts at Moulmein, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to retain his appointment as Resident Councillor together with his Moulmein post. See also 1311, 1312, 1426, 1682, 1684.

1687. March 1857. Letter from Monsieur C Casella, Sardinian Consul General, Calcutta. Asks for an audience on behalf of Count de Viry, Commander of His Sardinian Majesty's Frigate 'Beraldo'. Copy of reply, granting interview.
1688. January to March 1857. Letter from His Excellency Sir John Bowring, Government House, Hong Kong. Expects to get clear of the present difficulties at Canton which will ultimately assist in the revision of the treaties. Earlier letter (December) of Private Secretary to Sir John, that the Chinese events have caused great excitement in Calcutta.
1689. March 1857. Letter from Mrs H Howe, Calcutta. Asks for support of a fund for a charity. Copy of reply, asking for more details.
1690. February to March 1857. Letter from Major General George Tomkyns, Darjeeling. Forwards a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed) Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1691. March 1857. Letter from Major R R W Ellis, 23rd Native Infantry, Political Assistant in Bundelcund and Rewah, Nagod. Asks to be Political Agent at Kotah. Copy of reply, refused.
1693. March 1857. Letter from Sir Henry Lawrence, K C B, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Returns thanks for a letter about Lieutenant Forbes' appointment. See also 1630.
1694. March 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, Commissioner of Patna. Further to his maligned educational scheme. See also 1642, 1679.
1695. March 1857. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Governor General's Agent, Central India. Makes suggestions about native agents in the Political Departments. Telegraph Message sent number 93.
1696. March 1857. Copy of a reply to Mr H Inglis, Cherra Poonjee. His letter has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
1696a. March 1857. Copy of a reply to H W Chamberlain Esquire, Calcutta. About his application to Lady Canning to be invited to social events.
1697. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, Assistant Resident, Baroda, Camp Koreenar. Returns thanks for his appointment as Assistant Resident. Copy of earlier letter, informing him of his appointment. See also 530, 727, 838, 1568, 1578.
