Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1701 to 1725, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 18 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1701 to 1800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1702, 1704, 1716, 1718, and 1720 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
1701. March 1857. Letter from Mr J Garrett, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. In reply, about the new form of notice of departure of mail steamers. 2 letters. Copy of earlier letter about this.
1701a. March 1857. Copy of a letter to Major S C Macpherson. The Governor General has no orders to give him before he leaves Calcutta, and regrets that he is unable to see him.
1702. March 1857. Letter from Mr George Brown, Calcutta. Sends a clerk of Mair and Company to whom the 'Cairngorm' is consigned. The Commander is too ill to call himself, but will take the birds if they can be got on board in time.
1703. March 1857. Letter from Mr G Grant, watchmaker. Asks to be Clockmaker in Government House. Copy of reply, the vacancy has been filled.
1704. March 1857. Letter from Mr J M Robinson, Calcutta. Sends a letter to the Governor General about the Bill for extending the jurisdiction of the Courts of Criminal Jurisdiction of the East India Company (letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.

1706. March 1857. Letter from Suddanund Madhowoojee, Secretary to the Native Benevolent Library, Bombay. Sends two copies of a pamphlet, and asks the Governor General's patronage.
1707. March 1857. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. About Mr Impey, who, he believes, has absconded with treasure from Moulmein. See also 1676, 1677, 1696.
1708. March to April 1857. Letter from Lieutenant A G St J Mildmay, 3rd Bombay Europeans, Assistant Agent to the Governor General, Rajputana, Aboo. Asks to be Political Agent at Jodhpur, or anywhere else. Copy of reply, vacancy filled. See also 1790.
1709. March 1857. Copy of reply to Baboo Praunauth Bose. Asking him to call on the Private Secretary.
1710. March 1857. Letter from Mr H V Lillicrap, late Lieutenant Her Majesty's 8th Regiment, Calcutta. Asks permission to wait upon the Governor General with a letter from his mother, widow of the late Vice Admiral James Lillicrap. Copy of reply, please submit business in writing. See also 1732, 1373, 1450, 2000.
1711. March to April 1857. Letter from Mr F Gouldsbury, Commissioner of the Rajshahye Division, Rainpore, Banleah. Renews his application for promotion, of which he has no hope from the Lieutenant Governor. Copy of reply, Private Secretary does not recommend submitting this letter to the Governor General. See also 1671.
1712. March 1857. Letter from Major S C Macpherson, Political Agent at Gwalior, Calcutta. Encloses a letter for the Governor General pointing out that after 30 years in the service, his rank and emoluments are lower than they were 12 years ago. Copy of private reply from Private Secretary, acknowledgement. He hopes Macpherson finds on his return his Maharajah still content with his glimpse of Calcutta; the 19th Regiment have been quietly disbanded. See also 236, 1231.
1713. March 1857. Copy of a reply to Mr Pinson, 8 Dhurrumtollah. The Private Secretary can do no more in his case.
1714. March to April 1857. Letter from Mr G Campbell, Magistrate and Collector of Azimgurh, Umballa. Having been relieved of his charge of the Cis Sutlej states, asks whether he is to return to the North West Provinces, or to await orders. Copy of reply, please await further orders.
1715. March to April 1857. Letter from Dr C G Andrews, Surgeon, 30th Native Infantry, Nusseerabad. Asks to be medical storekeeper at Cawnpore. Copy of reply, apply to the Commander in Chief.
1715a. March 1857. Copy of reply to Mr W Cockburn, Rampore, Banleah. Returning his memorial which should be transmitted through the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
1716. March 1857. Letter from Mr R Cameron, Secrora, Oudh. Has obtained permission to send a native agent to Katmandu; he has established a branch house of business at Lucknow, and is forming another at Secrora, and Oudh promises to be one of the best parts of British India. Copy of reply, acknowledgement, Private Secretary will be glad to hear any more information about the state of the people. See also 1374, 1381, 1424, 1483.
1717. March 1857. Letter from Major the Honourable R B P Byng, 62nd Native Infantry, Commanding the Sylhet Light Infantry Battalion, Cherra Poonjee. States his reasons for wishing to change his position. See also 1653.
1718. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant P Stewart, Officiating Superintendent, of the Electric Telegraph in India, Calcutta. Is surprised that Government House has not been receiving copies of messages, and intends to dismiss those responsible. He hopes messages will be transcribed by a copying machine in the near future. 2 letters. See also 1460, 1461, 1559, 4818, 5104.
1719. March to April 1857. Letter from Ensign W G Waterfield, 2nd Native Infantry, Meerut. Asks for civil employment in the Punjab. Copy of reply, refused. See also 767.
1720. March to April 1857. Letter from Sir H M Lawrence K C B. Chief Commissioner, Lucknow. In reply to a letter from Mr Lynch, will enquire quietly about the concealed guns. He is agreeably surprised to find everything much quieter than he expected. Mr Jackson has given him much useful information. The jail is in very good order. Copy of earlier letter, sending a letter from a Mr Lynch, who has written often to the Governor General, his letters hitherto having received no attention, but this one is different, and Lord Canning thinks the statement about the concealment of guns is worth Lawrence's attention. 1724. March 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel O Cavenagh, 72nd Native Infantry, Town and Fort Major, Fort William. Sends a copy of a letter to him from Lord Dalhousie, and printed 'Notes on Nepal' (the latter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
1725. April 1857. Letter from Captain H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. In reply, mentions the name of two Lieutenants suitable for the Revenue Survey, discusses another, and reports that Colonel Shortrede may not return to the Survey.
