‘No. 18 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 1751 to 1775
- Scope & Content:
-
Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1751 to 1775, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 18 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1701 to 1800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1755, 1759, 1764, 1766, 1767, 1768 and 1772 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1763 is missing.
1751. March 1857. Letter from Mr J Lynch, Oudh. States that affairs in Oudh are daily assuming a mysterious and dangerous aspect, and although the authorities cannot be ignorant of what is going on in the city, not the slightest notice or steps for the protection of life and property have yet been taken. Unlimbered artillery is secreted in several houses of the 'dowlas'. Fuzzul Alee is up in arms towards Hydergurh, and it is unsafe to live in the city, and the Christian inhabitants are daily insulted. 'Feringee sub Ko dhaig laiga' is heard everywhere, these words will do much mischief with the rabble, who are ever ready to espouse the cause of the ex-king. Remember the reign of James I and the disasters of the Cabool campaign. There will be a general uprising, and unless stringent measures are taken, several hundred lives will be sacrificed, for they are only waiting to hear of the Restoration or otherwise.
