‘No. 19 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 1800 to 1825

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1800 to 1825, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 18 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1801 to 1900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1802, 1813, and 1819 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 1815, 1822 and 1823 are missing.
1801. April 1857. Letter from Mr G B Toussaint, Cawnpore. Has applied to Mr Muir for a Government appointment. See also 845, 884, 941, 951.
1802. March to April 1857. Letter from Mr D W Mitchell, Secretary to the Zoological Society, London.
Encloses an official reply to the Governor General's request to be informed of the expense to which the Zoological Society is prepared to go to rear Monals and other Himalayan game birds in the hill country and keep them there, until the cool weather sets in at Calcutta; the amount being £250. Copy of earlier letter, asking them how much they were willing to spend. See also 8539.
1803. April 1857. Letter from Captain D S Dodgson, 30th Native Infantry, Brigade Major at Benares. Has applied for the appointment of Brigade Major and Pay Master to the Oudh Irregular Force. Copy of reply, the vacancy has been filled Governor General's Book number 193.
1804. March to April 1857. Letter from Captain James Young, 4th Native Infantry, on duty, Persia. Is at present attached to the land transport corps as 1st Assistant but wishes for staff employ at the close of the campaign. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1285.
1805. April 1857. Letter from Mr George Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, Chauda. Suggests that 3 3rd class Assistant Commissioners in the Commission be permanently appointed, previously being officiating only, and at all events Lieutenant Cumberlege, 41 Native Infantry be permanently appointed, which will leave a vacancy as Brigade Major of the Nagpore Irregular Force for which he suggests Captain Day, 17 Madras Native Infantry, who has been Officiating in that post for more than a year. 1806. April 1857. Letter from the Reverend J Richards, Calcutta. At Lady Canning's wish the evening service at St John's was fixed at 6:30 instead of the usual hour of 7:00 in summer; but Lady Canning not having attended of late, wishes to alter the hour to 7:00 p m. Endorsed: answered privately.
1807. April 1857. Letter from Mr P Adams, Calcutta. Sends Mr Schlagintweit's address.
1808. April 1857. Letter from Lieutenant A G St John Mildmay, 3rd Bombay Europeans and Assistant Agent to the Governor General, Rajputana, Aboo. Asks to be Acting Political Agent at Bhartpore. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1760, 1785, 1954.
1809. April 1857. Letter from Dr Thomas Thomson, Superintendent of the Botanical Garden, Darjeeling. Applies on behalf of his brother-in-law, Ensign H Sconce, 74th Native Infantry, for the vacancy in Assam. Copy of reply, appointment is made by Lieutenant Governor. See also 1599, 1721, 1876, 1909, 1918.
1810. April 1857. Letter from Sarah Singha, Bali. Applies for support for the Bali Girls' school.
1811. April 1857. Letter from Syed Abdool Majeed, Deputy Magistrate of 24th Pergunnahs, Alipore
Applies to be asked to public suppers, balls, and levees. Copy of reply about this.
1812. April 1857. Letter from Mr Sharp, Superintendent of the Government Garden, Barrackpore.
Reports certain damage done by the heavy ordnance carts of Her Majesty's 84th Regiment to the terrace, and the death of some of the hill pheasants. Copy of reply about this.
1813. April 1857. Letter from Mr Dudley Smith, firm of Messrs Jardine Skinner and Co, Calcutta.
Reminds the Private Secretary of the case of Mr Armitage and his inquiries concerning his brother's claim for some land at Dalhousie. Also a letter from Major Phayre.
1814. April 1857. Letter from Mr T Garrett, Deputy Post Master General, Calcutta. Not dated, about arrangements for packets.
1816. April 1857. Letter from Mrs H Jervis, Barrackpore. Submits a pamphlet containing a memoir of her father Dr Strong, asks for his appeal to be decided. Copy of reply, apply to Lieutenant Governor. See also 1276, 1536, 1572, 1593, 1745, 1857.
1817. April 1857. Letter from Lieutenant G C Finlay, 12th Madras Native Infantry Ellichpore. Asks to be considered for a post in the Engineers' Department at Hyderabad. Copy of reply, the Madras Government must first apply for his services. See also 1735.
1818. April 1857. Letter from Mr J H Robinson, Secretary, Sailors' Home, Calcutta. Submits the annual Report of the Home and encloses a receipt.
1819. April 1857. Letter from Mr C H Lushington, Secretary to the Government of India, Financial Department. In reply, states that the subscriptions to the new loan amount to Rupees 74,20,400.
1820. April 1857. Letter from Ensign C R Mathews, 43rd Light Infantry, Barrackpore. Asks permission to fish in the tanks of the Barrackpore Park. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, granted.
1821. April 1857. Letter from the Reverend G Lovely, Junior Chaplain Old or Mission Church, Calcutta. Forwards a copy of the Report of the Colonial Church and School Society and Mission to Seamen in Calcutta, and hopes the Governor General will subscribe. Copy of reply sending donation. See also 1835.
1824. April 1857. Letter from Mr C H Medley, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary sends 10 Rupees, and will send no more.
1825. April 1857. Letter from Lieutenant E Clerk, 4th Madras Light Cavalry, Deputy Commissioner 2nd Class, Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, Seonee. Asks to be Deputy Commissioner 1st class in Oudh. Copy of reply, vacancy already filled. See also 1341.
