Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1851 to 1875, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 18 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1801 to 1900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1855, 1861, 1863, 1865, 1867, and 1873 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 1853 is missing.

1852. April 1857. Letter from Dr T Leckie, Surgeon to the Right Honourable the Governor General, Calcutta. Recommends Lieutenant J Fullerton, 16th Grenadiers, Officiating Commissioner 3rd class in Oudh. Copy of letter to Sir Henry Lawrence asking for information about Fullerton. See also 484, 485, 738.
1854. April 1857. Letter from Captain R Ranken, 35th Madras Native Infantry Hurryhur. Asks for civil employment in the Hyderabad, Mysore or Oudh Commissions. Copy of testimonial. Copy of reply, application noted.
1855. April 1857. Letter from Mr R Arbuthnot, Madras. Submits a list of subscribers to the Eton Memorial. Copies of 3 replies about this. See also 1185, 1196, 1315, 1316, 1863, 2267, 2268, 2269.
1856. April 1857. Letter from Baboo Praunauth Bose, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, refused.
1857. April 1857. Letter from Mrs H Jervis, Barrackpore. Acknowledges receipt of a letter and regrets having used the word inconsiderate in speaking of an officer with reference to Dr Strong's case. See also 1276, 1536, 1572, 1593, 1745, 1816.
1858. April 1857. Letter from Lieutenant D MacFarlane, Artillery, Lucknow. Returns thanks for his Officiating appointment as Assistant, Revenue Survey, Baree Doab. Copy of earlier letter about this; copy of telegraph from MacFarlane.

1859a. April 1857. Copy of a letter to Colonel Birch C B. Sending a letter from Mrs Powers about Captain Powers; mentions Captain Richardson's leave. See also 545, 549, 1158, 1858a.
1860. April 1857. Letter from Lieutenant H S V Fisher, 30th Native Infantry, Adjutant 11th Irregular Cavalry, Mussoorie. Has had his left leg amputated and asks for a civil appointment in Oudh or Rajpootana. Copy of letter to Private Secretary to Lieutenant Governor about this note from Major Bouverie. 1864. April to May 1857. Letter from Dr J A Currie, Assistant Surgeon 8th Irregular Cavalry, Bareilly. Sends a letter from the Marquis of Breadalbane (no longer enclosed). 4 anna stamp. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Governor General's Book number 421.
1865. May 1857. Letter from Mrs H Turnbull. Replies about the pheasants and squirrels in Barrackpore Park. See also 1849.
1865a. April 1857. Copy of a letter to the Officiating Superintendent of the Electric Telegraph Calcutta. Asks why the usual reports of the arrival of the English mail steamer at Madras were not transmitted.
1866. April to May 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J T Bushby, 6th Infantry Hyderabad Contingent, Bolaram. Asks to be Personal Assistant to the Commissioner Hyderabad. Copy of reply, apply to the Resident. See also 1370.
1867. May 1857. Letter from Mr D C Mackey of Messrs Mackey and Company Calcutta. Forwards a memorial, they have established some Iron Works at Beerbhoom for Pig and Wrought Iron, but there is a drink shop close by and they fear their workers will get drunk, ask the Governor General to close the shop for which they will compensate the Government (cover only). Copy of reply, transferred to the Home Department.
1868. May 1857. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division. Sends estimate and drawing for a new fence for the deer in the Park (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply about this. See also 1408, 1421, 1443, 1497, 1538, 3153.
1869. April to May 1857. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Officer, Barrackpore Division. Forwards completion certificate for the Park roads at Barrackpore (no longer enclosed).
1870. May 1857. Letter from Mrs C J Bridge, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to her petition for money. See also 1686.
1870a. April 1857. Copy of a letter of Private Secretary to Mr R de C Peele. Forwarding a misaddressed letter. The weather is terrible, 85° at 7am.
1871. April to May 1857. Letter from Mrs H Cheorot, Calcutta. In reply, wished to ask Lady Canning's aid for a young widow, with 4 children. Copy of reply, please name the family. See also 1862, 1880, 1896.

1874. May 1857. Letter from Mr J E Carter, Deputy Secretary to the Assam Tea Company, Calcutta. Forwards a memorial asking the Governor General to prohibit or restrict the cultivation and consumption of opium in Assam, which makes it difficult to obtain labour. Copy of reply, transferred to the Home Department.
1875. April 1857. Letter from Mr R Montgomery Civil Service Judicial Commissioner in the Punjab, Lahore. Asks for a civil appointment for his brother-in-law, Lieutenant E Lambert, 1st Fusiliers. Copy of reply, application noted.
