Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 1926 to 1950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 20 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 1901 to 2000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 1926, 1928, 1929, 1931, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1942, 1946 and 1950 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
1926. December 1856. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India, Home Department. About leave of absence of Private Secretaries to Governor General. Another letter about this, Dr Peele's case.
1927. October 1856. Letter from Mr W H Pickering, Woolwich. Introduces Mr Charles Saunders, Civil Service.
1928. March 1857. Letter from Major A Fytche, Deputy Commissioner, Bassein. When the news of Major Phayre's departure for England reached him, he was on the point of leaving for Europe but in the present state of affairs in Pegu will not leave unless compelled to by sickness.
1929. May 1857. Letter from Major H Ramsey, Commissioner of Kumaon Division. Encloses a bill of costs for carriage of pheasants (bill no longer enclosed). Copy of reply sending draft.
1930. May 1857. Letter from Mr W Meyers, late Madras Army, Pakour near Rajmahal. Asks for employment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1041, 1090.
1931. May 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H M Durand, Acting Agent to the Governor General, Central India, Indore. Is overwhelmed with work owing to the illness or uselessness of his Assistants and the references made to him for explanation of Sir R Hamilton's criminal sentences. The sepoy taken at Rewah belongs to the 37th Native Infantry at Benares. There are rumours of disaffection among the sepoys at Mhow. The opium merchants are alarmed at the news respecting China.
1932. May 1857. Letter from Mrs H Cheorot, Calcutta. Asks the result of her application on behalf of Mrs Sloley. Copy of reply, Lady Canning has sent a donation. See also 1862, 1871, 1880, 1896, 1897.
1933. May 1857. Letter from Mrs C E Cannon, Calcutta. Asks for an interview to submit a memorial of her late husband's claims on the Government. Copy of reply, the Governor General is too busy.
1934. May 1857. Letter from Lieutenant H A Prinsep, Aide de Camp to the Lieutenant Governor, North West Provinces, Agra. Asks for the services of Mr George Campbell as Officiating Secretary to the Government in place of Mr Muir, appointed as Officiating Member of the Sudder Board of Revenue. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1777.
1935. May 1857. Letter from Major G Ramsey, Resident at Nepal. Replies about Mr Lucas' proposals of commercial connections with Nepal; Mr Cameron's attempt is likely to fail. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also 1826.
1936. May 1857. Letter from Sir H M Lawrence, Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. About appointments to Oudh, where 6 or 8 Assistants are urgently required. All is quiet in Lucknow.
1937. May 1857. Letter from Major C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. About appointments in the Contingent. The Nizam continues in a precarious state. Copy of reply, written 18 May, about the appointments. There is much anxiety, the Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces speaks hopefully but it is very sad - 40 Europeans and others killed at Meerut including several officers, and the Delhi casualties unknown.
1938. May 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India, Home Department. Replies about Lieutenant Jenkins and Ensign Sconce. See also 1765, 1879, 1904, 1915.
1939. May 1857. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling, Calcutta. Asks 15th May to return to Nepal, submits his services (printed memorandum). Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1087, 3944.
1940. May 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India, Home Department. Encloses a letter from Miss Scott about Madame Niemeier. Copy of reply offering Mademoiselle Niemeier a post in a Calcutta Institution for Young Ladies.
1941. May 1857. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department. About various appointments. Copy of reply written 7 May from Barrackpore, where Private Secretary had been sent by the doctor.
1942. May 1857. Letter from Mr James Forlong, Kishnaghur. While anxious to see the eventual abolition of all privileges hitherto enjoyed by Englishmen, is convinced that the time has not yet arrived for any such change as is contemplated. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 1902.
1943. May 1857. Letter from Mrs Mary Pinson, Sealdah. Asks for money and employment for her husband.
1944. May 1857. Copy of reply to Lieutenant C Chamberlain, 27th Bombay Native Infantry. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
1945. April to May 1857. Letter from Lieutenant F H M Sitwell, 31st Native Infantry, Camp, Bushire. Has been attached to the Sind Horse; but owing to the sudden termination of the war, will be unemployed; asks for an appointment in the Irregular Cavalry in Bengal. Copy of reply, application noted. 1946. May 1857. Letter from Colonel Sir Henry Lawrence Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, Chief Commissioner, Oudh, Lucknow. Hopes that the Governor General approves of his having disarmed the 7th. Recommends his nephew for promotion.
1947. May 1857. Letter from Captain D Robertson, Officiating Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Forwards letters from Mr Fielder, the pilot of the 'Nubia' in explanation of his having left Kedgeree prior to the time originally fixed by him. Copies of 2 letters to Robertson.
1948. May 1857. Letter from Lieutenant T Pierce, Inspector and Quarter Master, 30th Native Infantry, Nusserabad. Asks for a civil appointment in Oudh, the Punjab or Central India. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 374, 3206.
1949. May 1857. Letter from Mrs Ann Phillip, Calcutta. Asks for money. See also 2190.
1949a. January 1862. Receipt for the return of the testimonials of Baboo Dwarkanath Rysack.
1950. April to May 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel M Nyslop, late 59th Native Infantry retired, Bath, England. Begs that if the Government of India resolves to accept 4% paper as part payment of subscriptions to the 5% Loan, the Governor General will secure to absent proprietors of 4% Stock the option of so getting rid of their ruinous investment. He has suffered a good deal by the transfer of his 5% Stock to 4% without his leave, by the Government Agent. Copy of reply, there is no intention of accepting 4% paper in part payment of subscriptions to the 5% loan. 2 other letters about this.
