Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2026 to 2050, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 21 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2001 to 3000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2026, 2028, 2030, 2033, 2037, 2040, 2045 and 2048a have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
2026. June 1857. Letter from the Honourable E Drummond, Calcutta. Encloses a telegraph just received from his brother at Agra (no longer enclosed).
2026a. June 1857. Copy of a letter to S L Blanchard Esquire, Editor of the 'Hurkaru'. Sending a list of those who escaped from Delhi (not enclosed).
2027. May to June 1857. Letter from Major F R Bazely, Bengal Artillery, Madras. Has waited upon Lord Harris, and received the Private Secretary's telegram; the 'Semiramis' with a transport in tow is bound from Bombay to Ceylon to convey the European Regiment thence to Calcutta. Copy of earlier letter sending Bazely letters for the Earl of Elgin and Sir H G Ward.
2028. June 1857. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling. In reply, it would not be practicable to get Gurkha recruits until after the rains, when it might be possible to secure 20000 men if the Nepal Government does not object. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. Also memorandum. See also 1983, 2449, 2467, 2571.
2029. June 1857. Letter from Mr W T Goldsworthy, Calcutta. Offers his services as an interpreter to any of Her Majesty's Regiment proceeding to the Upper Provinces. Copy of reply, application noted. Also memorandum. See also 2034.
2029a. June 1857. Copy of a letter to Colonel R J H Birch C B. About telegraphs. The telegraph for Sir John Lawrence about Sir Patrick Grant is not to go upon record (Telegraph Message received number 210). The telegraph from Sir Henry Lawrence suggesting Sir H Wheeler is not to go upon record (Telegraph Message received number 221). The telegraph which begins with an allusion to 'laying hands upon people' is to have the first sentence omitted, being an answer to a private message (Telegraph Message received number 226). The telegraph from Sir John Lawrence about Brigadier Johnstone is not to go upon record (Telegraph Message received number 211).
2030. June 1857. Letter from The Honourable A Eden, Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector, Baraset. Asks if Ensign C H F Gambier, 38th Native Infantry, was killed at Delhi or saved. Copy of reply, there is a narrative of his escape by Lieutenant Peile, he left Delhi but disappeared during the flight.
2031. June 1857. Letter from Captain P C Wiggins, 70th Native Infantry, Barrackpore. Asks for a cadetship for his nephew, the son of the late Captain Stoddard of the Nizam's service. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary has not yet found time to submit this letter to the Governor General.
2032. June 1857. Letter from Colonel D Simpson, Commanding 6th Native Infantry, Allahabad. Encloses a letter from the Duke of Buccleuch to the Governor General and returns thanks to the Governor General for not removing him from the 6th to the 8th regiment Native Infantry; he has done his best to maintain order and quiet at Allahabad. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2033. May to June 1857. Letter from Major G Ramsay, Resident at Nepal. Sends for the information of the Governor General his letter to Major Holmes asking him to withdraw the detachment sent by Holmes to sweep down the Teraie, as such a measure was likely to provoke a countermove by the Soobah of the Teraie. In the absence of any requisition for the surrender of Man Sing who has been moving about the Teraie with the knowledge of the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, no notice has been taken of him. Never were relations between the Nepal and British Governments better. Note about other letter. See also 2023, 2024. Governor General's Book number 479.
2034. June 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel O Cavenagh, Town and Fort Major of Fort William. Replies about Mr W F Goldsworthy. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 2029.
2034a. June 1857. Letter from Copy of a letter to the Lieutenant Governor, North West Provinces. Asking him to forward the accompanying letter to Lieutenant de Kantzow.
2035. May to June 1857. Letter from Lieutenant H F Dakeyne, 22nd Madras Native Infantry, Secunderabad. Sends a letter for the Governor General (no longer enclosed). See also 2214, 2431.
2036. May to June 1857. Lieutenant W N Lees, 42nd Native Infantry, Secretary to the Board of Examiners of Fort William, on leave, London. In support of his application for the retention of his appointment during extension of leave. Note from Mr Beadon.
2037. June 1857. Letter from Mr J L A H Byrne, Calcutta. Suggests the formation of a militia corps for the protection of Calcutta; offers suggestions as to the causes of the troubles.
2037a. June 1857. Copy of a letter to M Balfour Esquire, Agra and United Service Bank. About the admission of silver into the Fort at Agra.
2038. June 1857. Letter from Mr H V Lillicrap, late Lieutenant Her Majesty's 8th Foot, Calcutta. Asks for money. 2 letters. Copy of reply, asking for further details. Copy of reply sending 100 Rupees and refusing employment. See also 2039, 2043, 2044, 2046.
2039. April to June 1857. Letter from Mrs F A Lillicrap, widow of the late Admiral Lillicrap, Stonehouse near Plymouth. Asks for employment for her son. See also 2038.
2040. June 1857. Letter from Mr E Lautour, Civil and Sessions Judge, 24 Pergunnahs, Alipore. About the high price of rice; could be remedied by stopping the export of rice to China. Under the new laws it is necessary to convict the mutineers before their estates can be fortified. In consequence mutineers killed in battle, or who escape entirely, are never convicted and their families do not suffer. He suggests that a more effective deterrent would be to sell up the families of the native officers as soon as their regiment rebelled. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. His Excellency does not find the price of rice more than 1 anna higher than in 1856.
2041. May to June 1857. Letter from Mr W J Allen, Officiating Member of the Board of Revenue, on leave, Cherra Poonjie. Offers his services in the present crisis. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
2042. June 1857. Letter from Mr J H Black, Calcutta. Asks to know the result of his application for money. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, enquiry is being made. See also 1961.
2043. June 1857. Letter from Mr S L Blanchard, Editor of the 'Hurkaru', Calcutta. Replies about Mr Lillicrap. See also 2038, 2039, 2044, 2046.

2044. June 1857. Letter from Mr H V Lillicrap, Calcutta. Further to his case. See also 2038, 2039, 2043, 2046, 2162.
2045. June 1857. Letter from Dr T P Wright, Assistant Surgeon, Dinapore. Suggests the Government should advance money to officers who wish to send their families home; advances are unobtainable for officers at the moment elsewhere.
2046. June 1857. Letter from Mr H V Lillicrap, Calcutta. Repeats his application for aid. See also 2038, 2039, 2043, 2044.
2047. December 1856 to May 1857. Letter from Mademoiselle D Niemier, Macassar. Asks the Private Secretary to find her an appointment at a school in Calcutta. Endorsed: answered privately. See also 2048.
2048. June 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. Encloses 2 letters about Mademoiselle Niemier's employment in Calcutta Young Ladies' Institution. See also 2047.
2048a. June 1857. Copy of reply to Mr S L Blanchard, Editor of the 'Hurkaru', Calcutta. Perfect tranquillity prevails in Calcutta and the placing of Europeans, in addition to sepoys, upon the Mint and Treasury guards had no reference to any apprehension of disturbance. The arrival of Europeans at Benares and Allahabad has restored confidence there. Nothing more has been reported from Cawnpore or Lucknow.
2049. June 1857. Letter from Mr J Rennie, Messrs James Lyall and Company, Calcutta. Asks for his brother Captain Rennie, the appointment of Officiating Superintendent of Marine, vacant by the death of Captain Robertson. Copy of reply, refused, because Captain Rennie is absent on duty in the Persian Gulf. See also 2064, 2097.
2050. June 1857. Letter from Captain H Howe, Secretary to the Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Applies to be Officiating Superintendent of Marine. Copy of reply, application will be considered.
