Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2301 to 2350, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 24 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2301 to 2400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2304, 2305, 2306, 2308, 2309, 2310, 2311, 2315, 2319, 2320, 2323, 2329, 2330, 2331, 2334, 2341 and 2342 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
2301. August 1857. Letter from Major H E L Thuillier, Calcutta. Sends two copies of a new route map between Cawnpore and Lucknow. Copy of reply asking for 6 of these maps, and Lord Canning wishes to know the location of Busharut Gunge which General Havelock has twice taken from the enemy.
2302. August 1857. Letter from the Reverend Arthur Hamilton, Calcutta. Returns thanks for a subscription. See also 2218.
2303. August 1857. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Barrackpore Park. In reply about plants for the park. Copy of earlier letter about this.
2304. August 1857. Letter from Captain H Howe, Officiating Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Announces the safe departure of the Naval Brigade on board the 'Chunar'. Note by Private Secretary. See also 2305.
2305. August 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. Gives reasons for the detention of the 'Chunar' with the Naval Brigade. See also 2304.
2305a. August 1857. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant R Mignon, Indian Navy. Telling him that he will obtain information about the movements of the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Punjab' at the Home Office. [originally wrongly packaged after No 3305].
2306. August 1857. Letter from Mr S L Blanchard, Editor of the 'Hurkaru', Calcutta. Reports that there is a list of killed at Cawnpore in the 'Phoenix' which he understands has been supplied by Mr Beadon; and this partial distribution of news should not be allowed. Mentions the attempt of the 'Bishop of Bagdad' to intrigue. Copy of reply, Mr Beadon denies sending the list to the 'Phoenix'. Acknowledgement of the information about the 'Bishop'.
2307. August 1857. Letter from Colonel J D Kennedy, Commanding 70th Native Infantry, Barrackpore. Recommends Lieutenant G F Pasley, 7th Native Infantry, for the Adjutancy of the Militia, should be raised in Calcutta. Copy of reply, recommendation should be made to the Military Secretary.
2308. August 1857. Letter from Manackjee Rustomjee, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Private Secretary about Godowns at Cosipore for the accommodation of troops. Copy of reply, suggesting a time.
2309. August 1857. Letter from Mr E P Moore, Bengal 'Hurkaru' Office, Calcutta. Wishes to know whether the 'Bishop of Bagdad' has been seized or not. Copy of reply, he was seized on 17th August.
2310. August 1857. Letter from Major W A J Mayhew, Deputy Adjutant General, Calcutta. Asks to be informed of the date of the death of Major J S Banks, 33rd Native Infantry, Commissioner in the Province of Oudh. Copy of reply. The Private Secretary regrets that he cannot provide this information.
2311. August 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C J Otter, Her Majesty's 61st Foot, Commanding the Garrison and Station of Allahabad. Reports that the 'Chunar' steamer is so defective in her machinery that she cannot take them to Allahabad, and adds that Captain Peel suggests sending the 'River Bird'. Telegraph Message sent number 210.
2312. August 1857. Letter from Lieutenant T T Turton, 49th Madras Native Infantry, Adjutant, 4th Hyderabad Infantry Regiment, Lingsoogoor. Forwards a letter from his brother-in-law, Mr J B Templer, and asks for an appointment suggesting several posts. Copy of reply, apply to Military Secretary.
2313. August 1857. Letter from Baboo Seel Chunder Nundy, in charge, office of the Officiating Superintendent Electric Telegraph in India, Calcutta. Forwards 500 printed envelopes for the use of the Private Secretary's office. (Not enclosed).
2314. August 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Howrah.
Asks for employment in the Commissariat Department. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not distribute appointments in the Public Offices.
2315. August 1857. Letter from Her Majesty's Consul of Marseilles. In reply, states that the message for Lord Granville announcing the death of General Anson was forwarded to its destination immediately; the expense was £1. The message left Private Secretary on 5th Jun and reached Marseilles 12 Jul. Copy of message, that General Anson died on 27 May at Umballa of cholera; to be sent to the Consuls of Her Majesty at Marseilles and Trieste, for transmission to Lord Granville or Mr Greville, 16 Bruton Street, London. Copy of reply sending £1 to the Consul. Note for reply. See also 2390.
2316. August 1857. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Engineer, Barrackpore Division, Barrackpore. Forwards returns of buildings in the Civil Political Department at Barrackpore. (No longer enclosed).
2318. August 1857. Letter from Sahib Allum Sultan Timoor Miza alias Sultan Tagul Mulk, Bag Bazar, Chundernagore. Asks for a purwannah to the Agent of Moorshedabad, so that he may not be inconvenienced or detained as he was at Burdwan. See also 1567, 1848, 1889, 2869.
2319. August 1857. Letter from Captain J B Caldbeck, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company Service, Calcutta. Offers suggestions about the passage of troops through Egypt. Note by Private Secretary.
2320. August 1857. Letter from Major H Hopkinson, Officiating Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Sends a letter from Mr T Spears about the opinions of the King of Ava on affairs in India. He hopes that not too many troops will be taken from Pegu to Bengal, as he fears a rising of the Taloins. Suggests that a ship be stationed at Rangoon. He has written to Colonel Baker about Bassein and Dalhousie, the 2 towns are in difficulties. The Madras troops at Rangoon continue to be most satisfactory. He has just heard of the arrival of a Sardinian frigate at Moulmein and asks if her coming has any connection with Father Abbonna's Mission. Her arrival has restored confidence to Moulmein. Copy of reply, the Governor General hopes not to take any more troops from Pegu. At present no ship can be spared for Rangoon. All work at Dalhousie will be stopped. Great excitement has been created in England by the news of the Mutiny, and reinforcements, though insufficient, have been sent. Sir Colin Campbell has arrived to assume command of the army, and Lord Elgin has brought troops and the magnificent 'Shannon'. A Naval Brigade has been formed under Captain Peel; and the news from Delhi is better. See also 2421.
2321. August 1857. Letter from Mr J S A H Byrne, Calcutta. Writes about his unjust imprisonment by order of Captain Chapman of the Bengal Yeomanry Corps. 2 letters.
2322. August 1857. Letter from Mr Richard West, Mysore. Asks for an appointment in the Yeomanry Cavalry Corps, or an uncovenanted appointment. Copy of reply, his application for the first has been transferred to the Military Secretary, and for the second, the Governor General does not nominate to uncovenanted appointments under the Lieutenant Governor. See also 2317.
2323. August 1857. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, Companion of the Order of the Bath, Calcutta. Having heard that the Governor General has received some communication from Colonel Inglis about the death of Major Banks, begs to know the date of such communication in order to find an appropriate date for the casualty. Copy of memorandum about this. See also 2310.
2324. August 1857. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. Forwards a list of the covenanted civil and military servants with specification of their salaries and allowances on 1st May. (No longer enclosed).
2325. August 1857. Letter from Newab Hodju Mahomed Khan Koyjilbus, Russapuglah. Forwards a letter for the Governor General. Copy of note by Mr Beadon on this man. See also 2491.
2326. August to September 1857. Letter from Baboo Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Asks to be Dewan of Government House. Copy of reply, there is no vacancy. See also 2499.
2327. August 1857. Copy of reply to Lieutenant Colonel A Huyshe, Dinapore. His letter has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
2328. August to September 1857. Letter from Colonel A H E Boilleau, Bengal Engineers, Nagpore. Applies to succeed Colonel Baker, states his services. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2329. August 1857. Letter from Mr Roberts, Calcutta. Sends names of 3 persons as supporters and abetters of Koor Singh. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
2330. August 1857. Letter from Major H Hopkinson, Officiating Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. About appointments in the Commission. In Rangoon the rains have been very heavy, which would prevent the Burmese moving in Pegu until the cold weather, if they had any intention of so doing. Pegu should be reinforced by October. 2 of the Police Posts on the Myaday frontier were lately attacked. Encloses a letter from Mr Spears and copy of his reply to Spears. Copy of memorandum circulated by order of the Governor General. See also 2119, 2142, 2228, 2240.
2331. August to September 1857. Letter from Mr T C Fenwick, Calcutta. Submits a project to guard the river between Calcutta and Rajmahal against bands of armed men supposed to be on their way in boats towards the Residency, and offers his services. Copy of reply, services refused. Note from Mr Beadon about Fenwick.
2332. August to October 1857. Letter from Lieutenant W P Harrison, 7th Madras Native Infantry, Officiating 1st Class Assistant Commissioner Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein. Applies to be confirmed in his post. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, the vacancy is not yet reported. 2 notes from Mr Edmonstone.
2333. August to September 1857. Letter from Captain J P Briggs, 40th Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner, Moulmein. Asks to be Officiating Deputy Commissioner at Rangoon. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 2119, 2142, 2228, 2240, 2330.
2334. August 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Moulmein. Sends a letter suggesting that in order to prevent any decline in the loyalty of the people of Moulmein, he be appointed Governor of the Nicobar and Andaman Islands in order to colonize and civilize the latter but in reality to be Governor of the Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces with authority to establish or introduce local self-government. 2 anna stamp.
2335. July 1857. Copy of a reply to Captain F F Bruce, 12th Bombay Native Infantry, late Commandant Scinde Irregular Horse, Kurrachee. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
2339. August to September 1857. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of Barrackpore Park. Reports on the state of the Park. Copy of reply about this.
2340. August 1857. Letter from Captain F C Chapman, Bengal Yeomanry Corps, Alipore. Asks for the return of certificates. Copy of reply, Private Secretary, Governor General, and Military Secretary, have never seen certificates of Chapman. 3 other papers.
2341. June 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel T Nuthall, Commissary General, Calcutta. About Rajah Maun Sing's visit to the King of Oudh.
2342. June 1857. Letter from Mr R Simson, Under Secretary, Foreign Department. Has just received 2 letters from his brother saying that the Gonda and Bahraitch people are safe at Goruckpore. A letter had been received from Captain Ogilvie at Saugor, that Delhi had fallen and the King was begging for mercy.
2343. September 1857. Copy of a letter to Colonel Baker. Forwarding some papers about the construction of steamboats for the Ganges.
2344. August to September 1857. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant General Superintendent Thuggee and Dacoity Department, Belgaum. Re-applies to succeed Captain Harvey, but wishes to act for Captain Elliott in the meantime; with further particulars of services. See also 2204, 2537.
2345. July to August 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Sir A Bogle, Commissioner of Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, on leave, London. States that his health entirely broke down at Moulmein, and he can never serve there again. It would not suit his purpose to return to India if a few months afterwards he is to be removed from civil employment on promotion to regimental Colonel; he would wish to be appointed to one of the Commissionerships or Residencies, particularly Mysore, or the Governorship of the Straits Settlements. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot hold out any hope of either of the posts named being offered to Bogle.
2346. August to September 1857. Letter from Mr Joseph Greene, Customs Preventive Officer, Calcutta. Applies to be re-admitted in the Subordinate Medical Department and encloses his certificates. Copy of reply, apply to Military authorities. Certificates are returned.
2347. August 1857. Letter from Mr E B Toussaint, Howrah. Asks for employment and suggests the Commissariat Department.
2348. August 1857. Letter from Mr E B Toussaint, Howrah. Encloses a letter from his father to the Private Secretary.
2349. August 1857. Letter from Mr H B Riddell, Director General of Post Offices, Calcutta. Asks for an interview with the Governor General about the conveyance of troops to Allahabad by land.
