Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2601 to 2650, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 27 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2601 to 2700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2604, 2605, 2606, 2607, 2608, 2611, 2612, 2614, 2617, 2620, 2622, 2624, 2625a, 2628, 2629, 2631, 2632, 2633, 2634, 2635, 2637, 2638, 2639, 2642, 2644, 2647, 2648 and 2650 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
2602. October 1857. Letter from Mr J Rennie, Calcutta. In favour of his brother's application to succeed Captain Rogers as Superintendent of Marine. Copy of reply, the appointment is made by the Honourable Court, and the Governor General only nominates a temporary Superintendent. See also 2613.
2603. October 1857. Letter from Captain and Brevet Major W H Larkins, 2nd Native Infantry, Calcutta. Reports his return from furlough, and wishes to be appointed to civil employ. Copy of reply, application noted.
2604. October 1857. Letter from Captain H C James, 32nd Native Infantry, Darjeeling. Submits an account for transmitting pheasants from London. Copy of reply, sending money in settlement. See also 1430, 1651, 2708.
2605. October 1857. Letter from H A Murray Esquire, Private Secretary to the Governor of Madras. In reply, sends a letter with information about Dr Hunter Adams. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 2420.
2606. October 1857. Letter from Messrs Colvin, Ainslie, Cowie and Company, Calcutta. Asking for information about Mr A Boulderson, Civil Service, supposed to be at Lucknow. Copy of reply, nothing known.
2607. October 1857. Letter from Captain H W Haswell, 'Himalaya', Kedgeree. Has received the Governor General's letter for the Governor at the Cape, and will leave as soon as possible. Copy of earlier letter sending the despatch, for which the ship was held up. Telegraph Message received numbers 439, 442, 444. Telegraph Message sent numbers 229.
2608. July to October 1857. Letter from Mr Rowland Hamilton, Calcutta. Encloses a copy of a letter from Baboo Govind Loll Sett, containing an account of the mutineers in Oudh, and adds that there is a report that Furrackabad has been looted.
2609. October 1857. Letter from Mr M P Crisp, Moulmein. Remarks on the effect which a renewal of hostilities in Burma or a rebellion in Pegu is likely to produce on Moulmein, and on commercial interests generally.
2610. September to October 1857. Letter from Captain J P Nixon, Assistant Agent, Rajputana, Agra
Asks to be appointed Political Agent at Joudpore in place of Captain Monck Mason who was killed in action before Awa on 18th September. He reports Captain Showers' successful attack on Neembheira; and General Lawrence's attack of 18th September on the mutineers of the Joudpore Legion. He has just heard of the fall of Delhi and encloses a copy of Colonel Becker's letter (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, application noted; a ship with the first English reinforcements is announced this day in the river, 14th October. See also 2925, 3055. Governor General's Book number 405. 2611. October 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna, Calcutta. Submits an explanation regarding the exception taken by the Governor General to his having printed his defence, and expresses his regret.
2612. October 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna, Calcutta. Submits a statement showing that he was quite ignorant of the fact which the Lieutenant Governor has urged to his prejudice, that the detachment of the 64th was available for the protection of Gya; until 4th Aug he had no knowledge of this, when Mr Money had returned. He encloses a printed addenda to his previous letters. (Tayler was dismissed for abandoning Gya to the mutineers.)

2614. October 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna, Calcutta. Submits a 4th Appendix about his dismissal.
2615. October 1857. Letter from Captain J P Watts, 27th Madras Native Infantry, Bengal Club, Calcutta. Asks for the return of the Madras Commissariat regulations which he lately submitted to the Governor General. Copy of reply, returning this. Also note.
2616. October 1857. Letter from Mr H A Murray, Private Secretary to the Governor of Madras. Sends a telegram to Sir R Hamilton.
2617. October 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna, Calcutta. Submits a letter from Mr Lewis Jackson, Judge of Rajshaie, as an additional testimonial. Copy of reply, returning this letter.
2618. October 1857. Letter from Mr W S Morley, Calcutta. Owing to the death of his father, an indigo planter, and other losses and disappointments, his family is very poor and asks for employment, and some relief. Copy of reply, declining, as the Governor General knows nothing of the case. See also 2746.
2619. October 1857. Letter from Mr C W West, Inspecting Post Master, Camp, Mangalore. Asks for promotion. Copy of reply, he must apply to his superior. See also 2359 and 2578.
2620. October 1857. Letter from Mr F W Place, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed tonnage on each vessel to the North West Provinces, as he has papers and other materials to send to replace those he has lost. Agra is quiet, but great anxiety prevails for news from Lucknow and Delhi. Copy of reply, there is no chance of sending up anything for some weeks.
2621. October 1857. Letter from Mr W Bonnaud, Calcutta. Asks for an uncovenanted appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1060, 4836, 4826, 7708, 7746.
2622. September to October 1857. Letter from Mr R B Mosse, 2 Storey's Gate, Westminster, London. States that the Great Northern and Eastern of Bengal Railway had selected the line crossing the Ganges and Rampore Bauleah or Pubna, as per map enclosed, but the Eastern Bengal are now unjustly trying to appropriate this line; under the circumstances asks for the Governor General's aid. Copy of reply, the matter is being considered. Note about this. Governor General's Book number 294.
2623. October 1857. Letter from Mrs M Tonge, Dinapore. Returns thanks for Lady Canning's donation to her. See also 2601.
2624. October 1857. Letter from Mr R J Schmidt, late a Section writer in the Foreign Department, Calcutta. Submits a memorial to the Governor General expressing his regret for having unwittingly communicated items of intelligence to the Press during his appointment with the Foreign Office, and prays to be forgiven. Copy of reply, the Governor General declines to interfere.
2625. October 1857. Letter from the Archdeacon of Calcutta, J H Pratt. Forwards two printed copies of his sermon of 4th October. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
2625a. October 1857. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. Asks for all correspondence about a Free Church Chaplain. Copy of a letter, and memorandum about this. See also 2518, 2558.
2626. October 1857. Letter from the Reverend Boaz, Honourable Secretary, Calcutta Seamen's Friend Society, Calcutta. Submits an appeal for the Society. Copy of reply sending 100 Rupees. See also 1159, 1166, 2689, 4303, 7230.
2627. October 1857. Letter from Captain J J Hamilton, Assistant Commissioner 1st class, Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Ellichpore. Applies to be Deputy Commissioner in Oudh, and submits testimonial. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 2790.
2628. October 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C Davidson, Resident at Hyderabad. About the appointment of Captain Knocker and others to the Hyderabad Commission. He regrets that the Governor General regards the Contingent with suspicion as, except for the 1st Cavalry, they have behaved admirably; he suspects that a jealousy on the part of Brigadier Hill toward Major Orr prevents the employment of the Edulabad detachment across the Nerbudda. The Nizam is much influenced by superstition and fakirs, and has been behaving very eccentrically, but not mischievously. Copy of earlier letter, announcing the appointment of Captain Knocker. 2629. October 1857. Letter from Captain H Raban, Private Secretary, Alipore. Returns thanks for the copy of telegram from Major English, and states that Mr Money telegraphed from Gya on 20th October that the mutineers were at Kungooley, North East of Wuzeergunge.
2630. October 1857. Letter from Lieutenant P Stewart, Officiating Superintendent, Electric Telegraph, Calcutta. Asks if a list of the details of the Lucknow garrison has been received, as he intends to put a stop to private messages of inquiry to Cawnpore which are overburdening the Electric Telegraph Office.
2631. October 1857. Letter from Mr M Townsend, Serampore. Promises to rectify the statement about the 50th Madras Native Infantry, and asks for a copy of the Act of Parliament passed before the prorogation about punishment for the sepoys. Copies of two replies; no such act passed, there is probably a confusion with the ordinary Indian Mutiny Act, which is periodically passed for the government of Her Majesty's troops in India. Copy of letter to Lord Harris, about the retraction by the 'Friend of India' of an expression about the fidelity of the Madras Army.
2632. October 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna, Calcutta. Wishes to paint a picture of the presentation of the Colours to the Calcutta volunteers by Lady Canning. Copy of a reply, acknowledgement; Lord Canning regrets he will be unable to spare the time for a sitting.
2633. October 1857. Letter from Mrs Henry Woodrow, Calcutta. Asks for information about the Reverend and Mrs Polehampton, and Mr and Miss Schilling. Copy of reply, Mrs Polehampton and Miss Schilling are on the list of survivors from Lucknow; many more are known to have survived, whose names have not yet been sent to Private Secretary.
2634. October 1857. Letter from Mr G W Kellner, Treasury, Calcutta. Asks for information about Captain H G Burmester, 48th Native Infantry, reported killed near Lucknow. Copy of reply, nothing known.
2635. October 1857. Letter from the Honourable J A Dorin, Calcutta. Asks for information about his son, Lieutenant J A Dorin, and his son's wife, at Lucknow. Note about the list of survivors. Endorsed: answered privately.
2636. October 1857. Letter from Mr G B Hodges, late of the Public Works Department, Calcutta.
Asks for employment. Copy of reply, declined.
2636a. October 1857. Copy of a letter to Major H Hopkinson, Rangoon. Sending instructions about D'Orgoni, who will probably come to Galle in one of the Australian steamers from Suez, and not on an Indian steamer where he might be known. Close watch is to be kept over all arrivals in any sort of vessel. Copy of letter to T Garrett Esquire. This (above) letter is very urgent and to be sent as soon as possible. 2637. October 1857. Letter from Mr J Graham, Barrister at Law, Calcutta. Asks for information about Lieutenant and Mrs Hale and child, and Ensign J Brackenbury. Memorandum that their names are not on the present list. See also 2645.
2638. October 1857. Letter from Mr P W Le Geyt, Calcutta. Asks for information about Mr Lucas, at Lucknow. Endorsed: nothing known.
2639. October 1857. Letter from Mr F W Place, Calcutta. Submits papers for the Governor General (no longer enclosed) and remarks that there are private letters in town giving a detailed account of the Agra affair.
2639a. October 1857. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel Strachey, Secretary to Government, Central Provinces. Sending a packet for Sir J Outram. News of the survivors at Lucknow is anxiously awaited. The Screw Steamer 'Lindsay' has come in with Royal Artillery. He hopes Greathed's column will be at Cawnpore in time to be of use.
2640. October 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J R G Magrath, 1st Madras Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Commissioner, Nagpore. Asks for an appointment in the Oudh Commission, or elsewhere. Copy of reply, application noted.
2640a. October 1857. Copy of a letter to the Honourable F J Halliday. Private Secretary has shown the papers to Sir C Campbell who regrets he cannot spare a man.
2641. October 1857. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Calcutta. Sends 7 copies of the Military Map (no longer enclosed). See also 2538, 2589.
2642. October 1857. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, Calcutta. In reply, Lieutenant J H Lambe of the Artillery died on 24th Aug from wounds received in action. Copy of reply to R L Reid, Calcutta, forwarding this information. See also 2740.

Sends a sketch of a house at Arrah, fortified and defended by Mr Boyle and Mr Wake with 10 English Residents and 50 Sikhs for 7 days against the three mutinous regiments from Dinapore. (Sketch no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, Governor General will take 6 additional copies.
