Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2651 to 2700, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 27 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2601 to 2700’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2650, 2662, 2663, 2665, 2668a, 2671, 2672, 2673, 2674, 2675, 2676, 2681, 2683, 2686, 2687, 2688, 2693, 2695, 2696, 2697, 2698 and 2700 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

2653. October 1857. Letter from Major R B Brett, Bombay Artillery, Bombay. Encloses a letter from Lord Stratford de Redcliffe to the Governor General and asks for an appointment in the field. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, application noted.
2654. October 1857. Letter from Mr T E B Judge, Calcutta. Asks for a recommendation to the Commander-in-Chief for his brother Lieutenant C M Judge, Engineer in charge of the defences at Alum Bagh. Copy of reply, will send letter of introduction; copy of letter to Sir Colin Campbell about Judge. See also 2655, 3240.

2656. October to November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant A St J Mildmay, Assistant Agent Governor General, Rajputana, Bikaner. Asks to be made Political Agent at Joudhpore. He is raising a force of 500 men with two light mountain guns for the relief of Aboo, and recommends the Maharajah of Bikaneer be thanked by the Government for services rendered. Copy of reply, applications noted.
2660. October 1857. Letter from Colonel D Simpson, Calcutta. Asks for information about Mr Willcock, Civil Service, at Lucknow. Copy of reply, nothing known.
2660a. October 1857. Copy of a letter to Prince Gholam Mohmed, Russapugla. Sending him a letter from His Royal Highness Prince Albert.
2661. October 1857. Letter from Mr Henri de Valadares. Asks for patronage for his next concert. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 20 tickets.
2662. October to November 1857. Letter from Mr G Campbell, Civil Service, Camp, Cawnpore. Asks to be Judicial Commissioner in Oudh; on his march with the movable column noticed the friendly spirit of the people of the districts between Cawnpore and Agra, especially those of the Futtehpore district. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1777, 1934.
2663. October to November 1857. Letter from Captain H Hopkinson, Officiating Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Sends a letter from Mr Spears; he has been warned to watch the King and Prince more closely. The news of the fall of Delhi and the relief of Lucknow has been telegraphed to Mr Spears and have a beneficial effect on Burma. Reports a recent fire in Rangoon; he attaches little importance to the Prome conspiracy reported in his last letter. Asks for information about Major and Mrs Robertson and child, and Miss Thomson. All is quiet at Rangoon; emissaries were at work in Bassein, Denabew, Myatoon, but without attempting anything yet. Copy of reply, Private Secretary regrets he has no certain news of the Robertsons or Miss Thomson. Refers to news from Lucknow. Note from Mr Beadon.
2664. October 1857. Letter from Captain B W Ramsay, Brigade Major, Her Majesty's troops, Fort William. Submits the wish of Captain Scott, commanding the detachments of 42nd Highlanders, that the appointment of a minister of the Free Church of Scotland be left in abeyance until the arrival of the Head Quarters of his corps. Copy of reply, the appointments are already made. See also 2518, 2558.
2665. October to November 1857. Letter from Major the Honourable R B P Byng, Commanding Sylhet line, Infantry Battalion, Cheera Poonjee. Reports on the good conduct of the native regiments under his command. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.

2667. September to October 1857. Letter from Assistant Surgeon D MacDonald, Simla. Asks to be given the civil medical charge of Simla.
2668. October to November 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Howrah. Asks to be made Extra Assistant Commissioner in the North West Provinces. Copy of reply, appointment not in Governor General's gift. See also 2682.
2668a. October 1857. Letter from Sir R Shakespear, Resident at Baroda. With reference to his official report about a conspiracy discovered at Baroda, mentions a few points, which being of a delicate nature, have been excluded from the report, connected with the Gaekwar's family, and the complicity of the Gaekwar, and his ministers. Private and confidential.
2669. October to November 1857. Letter from Mr Thomas Meliss, indigo planter, Purneah. Brings to the Governor General's notice the danger to Purneah from the 73rd Native Infantry at Julpugoorie, who are daily expected to mutiny, also the Assam Regiments and asks for British troops. 2671. November 1857. Letter from Captain W S Sherwill, Calcutta. Asks for information about Captain Maycock, Captain D S Dodgson and Lieutenant J M Fraser, who are with Havelock at Lucknow. Endorsed: answered privately.
2672. November 1857. Letter from Mr S Wauchope, Officiating Commissioner of Police, Calcutta. Reports that no suspicious persons arrived on the 'Alma'.

2682. November 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Howrah. Renews his application for employment at Nagpore; submits letter to show he is in actual distress (no longer enclosed). See also 2668.
2683. September to November 1857. Letter from Messrs Barker, Bowker and Peake, London. Submit a power of attorney for the Governor General's signature, for a sale of Mr Roy's property at Cheltenham held in mortgage by his Lordship for £5,000. Copy of reply returning this.
2684. November 1857. Letter from Mr L Bowring, Civil Service, Calcutta. Asks to be gazetted as detained in Calcutta on duty. Copy of reply. Private Secretary will write to the Lieutenant Governor to tell him Bowring is detained on the Governor General's order. Copy of letter to the Honourable J P Grant, Lieutenant Governor, Central Provinces, explaining this; remarks on how nearly the 32nd captured the Commander-in-Chief; he hopes Osborne will be able to hold out at Rewah, he is one of the best men in the emergency.
2685. November 1857. Letter from Mrs F C Jackson, Hooghly. Asks if she may go to Ghazeepore to rejoin her husband. Copy of reply, ladies are prohibited from going up-country, and when the ban will be lifted is unknown.

2686. November 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Calcutta. Asks for an interview to submit his grievances about the losses he sustained by certain acts of Government authorities at Rangoon and Moulmein. Letter from Mr Edmonstone about this case; memorandum about this; copy of reply, refusing interview with the Governor General but offering one with Private Secretary. See also 2700, 3037.
2687. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant G H Hale, Adjutant, 2nd Oudh Irregular Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for information about Mrs Hale, his wife, at Lucknow. Copy of reply. Mrs Hale did not survive the siege, but Private Secretary regrets he has no information about her death.
2688. November 1857. Letter from Mr D C Mackey, Chairman of the Assam Company, Calcutta. Submits a letter about the threatening position in Assam, and urges the necessity for reinforcements. Copy of reply, refused. Endorsed: 'Mr Beadon remarks Mr M is a notorious alarmist.'

2690. November 1857. Letter from Mrs Simpson, Calcutta. Asks for information about Lieutenant Simpson and Lieutenant Blake at Lucknow. Copy of reply, Private Secretary regrets he has no information, as he has no casualty list from Lucknow. See also 2559.

2692. October to November 1857. Letter from Mr J M Cantopher, Calcutta. Asks for patronage for his French Grammar.
2693. November 1857. Letter from Captain W A J Heath, HMS 'Assistance', Calcutta. Thanks the Governor General for allowing his vessel to proceed down the river immediately, and states that his lordship's wishes about despatches from Kedgeree will be obeyed. Earlier letter to Heath.
2694. November 1857. Letter from Mr C C Jackson, Calcutta. Asks for an audience before he leaves for Benares. Copy of reply, arranging this. Also note.
2694a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to the Manager of the 'Bombay Times'. About the copy of the 'Home News' sent to the Private Secretary's office.
2695. September to October 1857. Letter from the Honourable Frederick Bruce, Hong Kong. Reports that the Commissioner has written very fully to the Governor General for troops for China, as the attack on Canton cannot be deferred beyond the end of the year. The French are to send troops to China, it would be unfortunate if they made a formidable display in the East. There are varied reports about the Russian minister's reception at the Court of China. Copy of earlier letter, sending news of affairs in India, on 19 Sep; good news from Delhi and Lucknow; Goruckpore was abandoned by the civil officers, a mistake which will endanger the opium revenue; other news.
2696. November 1857. Letter from Captain W E Morton, Calcutta. Asks for information about Captain G Thomas Gowan, commanding 9th Oudh Irregular Infantry, and his wife and child, who were at Seetapore. Copy of reply, nothing certain is known, but there is little, if any, hope. Letter about this.

2697. November 1857. Letter from Mr R Money, Civil Service, Calcutta. Reports his return from furlough and asks for orders for employment. Copy of reply, apply to the Local Government at Benares, and Agra. Note from Mr Beadon about this, also note to Beadon.
2698. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel O Cavenagh, Town Major, Fort William. Asks for an interview for Captain Palmer, Acting Agent to the wife of Gholam Hossein Khan, one of the state prisoners.
2698a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to Major General Windham, Cawnpore. Asking him to forward a letter.
2699. November 1857. Letter from Mr F W Place, Benares. Asks if Agra or Allahabad will be the seat of Government of the North West Provinces; he wishes to start a newspaper there. He deserves compensation if the Government sells his property at Delhi. Believes Benares will be overrun by the rebels, and deprecates the grant of leave to sepoys returning from furlough. Copy of reply, his question about property in Delhi is answered by the notification in the Gazette of 23rd November. He will do well to pause before setting up in Agra. See also 2539, 2831, 3356.
2700. November 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Calcutta. Explains how he incurred the displeasure of Lord Dalhousie and lost his property in Moulmein and Rangoon. Copy of reply, Governor General will not interfere. See also 2686, 3037.
