Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2701 to 2750a, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 28 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2701 to 2800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2701, 2702, 2704, 2705, 2709, 2710, 2711, 2713, 2714, 2717, 2718, 2719, 2727, 2728, 2731, 2732, 2335, 2739, 2740, 2742, 2743, 2747, 2747a, 2750 and 2750a have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
2701. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant O M Glubb, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor Central Provinces, Benares. Submits a corrected list of casualties at Lucknow and explains why a copy was not published or sent to the Governor General before (List no longer enclosed).

2702. November 1857. Letter from Mr H Agnasius, Calcutta. Complains of a recent decision of the Senior Magistrate of Calcutta.
2703. October to November 1857. Letter from Captain Griffith Jenkins, Indian Navy, Bombay. Asks to be Superintendent of Marine, or that the post be given to any officer of the Indian Navy. Copy of reply, the appointment is made by the Honourable Court, Governor General can only nominate acting officer.
2704. November 1857. Letter from Mr C A Cantor, Calcutta. Asks for information about Lieutenant C H Cantor, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Copy of reply, Private Secretary has no list of Delhi casualties.
2704a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant Colonel Strachey, Secretary to Government of Central Provinces, Benares. Sending a letter from England.
2705. October to November 1857. Letter from Mr C M Teed, Madras. Acknowledges receipt of Private Secretary's letter, he has put the forged document in the hands of the police. Copy of earlier letter sending forgery to Teed. See also 2597.
2706. November 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Calcutta. Asks to be Superintendent of Marine. Copy of reply, not a Governor General's appointment.
2606a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to General Sir C Campbell, Cawnpore. Sending him a copy of a letter addressed to Major Atkinson for his information. 'Barham', 'England', 'Caledon', 'Oliver Putnam' [?] 'John Bell' and 'Melville' have arrived with troops.
2707. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant J Cockerell, 4th Light Cavalry (Lancers), Burdwan. Asks to be appointed to the Stud Department or any civil or military post. Copy of reply by Private Secretary, he will do his best for him.
2708. November 1857. Letter from Captain H C James, 32nd Native Infantry, Darjeeling. Acknowledges receipt of money to pay for the costs of the Himalayan birds. See also 2604.
2709. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant C Armstrong, 14th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for information about his brother Lieutenant Armstrong. Copy of reply, nothing known, apply to Adjutant General or Military Secretary.
2710. November 1857. Letter from Mr George Campbell, Civil Service, Benares. Asks that the Jhelum Commissionership in the Punjab be reserved for him; in the meantime asks for another post. Copy of telegraphic reply telling him to come to Calcutta at once. See also 1777, 2885, 2887.
2711. November 1857. Letter from the Honourable F J Halliday. Submits an explanation of his recommendation for the formation of a native corps of mounted police in Behar.
2712. November 1857. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Calcutta. Sends four more copies of the Military Map of India. See also 2588, 2589, 2641, 2677, 2678, 2679.
2713. November 1857. Letter from Mr T M Robinson, Calcutta. Asks for information about Mrs Sawyer who was at Meerut, and Lieutenant O S Bridges, 53rd Native Infantry, who was at Cawnpore. Note from Major Atkinson about these people. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Bridges' fate is unknown, he is not mentioned in the list of those at Cawnpore. Nothing is known of Mrs Sawyer.
2713a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to Commander Lacy, Royal Navy, HMS 'Adventure', Calcutta. Asking him to report on the state of the enquiries about HMS 'Adventure'.
2714. November 1857. Letter from Dr A J Payne, Assistant Surgeon, General Hospital, Calcutta. Asks for information about Captain 'Flinch', Her Majesty's 70th Regiment with the volunteer Cavalry; believes it must be his brother-in-law who is meant, Captain Lynch. Copy of reply, Private Secretary believes Lynch must have been meant, on the list of killed and wounded at Lucknow.
2717. October to November 1857. Letter from Colonel J S Brownrigg, Dublin Castle, Quarter Master General's Office. Acknowledges receipt of money for the Eton Memorial. Copies of four earlier letters about this. See also 2267, 2268.
2718. November 1857. Letter from Baboo Dwarkeynath Roy, Pundit Hindu School, Calcutta. Submits copy of his essay on native female education in Bengal. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2719. November 1857. Letter from Mr D A Gantzer, Accountant, Office of Superintendent of Embankments, Midnapore. Asks permission to publish and dedicate to the Governor General the second edition of his book, for the guidance of members of the Public Works Department. Copy of reply, accepting dedication.
2720. November 1857. Letter from Dr T M Lownds, Assistant Surgeon, Bombay Medical Establishment. Asks to be Assistant Surgeon to the Governor General's Agent for the states of Rajputana. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 1139, 2949.
2721. November 1857. Letter from Monsieur G Boilleau, Calcutta. The new French Consul, asks for an audience. Endorsed: note for time of his audience.
2722. November 1857. Letter from Mrs R Money. Asks to be permitted to go up Country. Copy of reply, no exceptions can be made to the rule.
2723. November 1857. Letter from Mrs R Money, Calcutta. Asks if the Government would allow her to accompany her husband up-country by private dak. Copy of reply, refusal.
2724. November 1857. Letter from Mr J H Love, late Officiating Deputy Collector, Calcutta. Asks for a pension. Copy of reply, returning petition as submitted through the wrong Department. See also 2760.
2725. November 1857. Letter from Captain J J Hamilton, Assistant Commissioner 1st class, Northern Division Hyderabad Berar district, Ellichpore. Reports that his salary is to be raised, with reference to his application for post in the Oudh Commission. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2726. November 1857. Letter from Mr A Pigon, Civil Service, Officiating Civil Sessions Judge, Berhampore. Asks to be made Governor General's Agent to His Highness the Nabob Nazim at Moorshedabad in addition to his other duties. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2727. November 1857. Letter from Mr H V Bayley, Calcutta. Asks for information about Lieutenant Philip Jackson and his wife, who are supposed to have escaped from the massacre at Cawnpore. Copy of reply, Lieutenant and Mrs Jackson were among those of the garrison at Cawnpore, from a list given by the survivor Lieutenant Dellafosse. No details are known.
2727a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to Cornet W H Jennings, Cavalry cadet, Dum Dum. Private Secretary hopes to have the pleasure of meeting him at Dum Dum very shortly.
2728. October to November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H M Durand, Officiating Agent to the Governor General Central India, Camp, Dhar. As he is about to be relieved of his post by the return of Sir Robert Hamilton, asks to be Officiating Resident at Hyderabad.
2729. November 1857. Letter from Mr Alfred Fryer, late Commander of the Honourable Company's Steamer 'Sesostris', Calcutta. Asks for a reconsideration of his case, he was wrongly removed by the Officiating Superintendent of Marine for grounding the 'Sesostris' (Letter no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his papers have been transferred to the Home Office; copy of note to Mr Beadon.
2730. November 1857. Copy of reply to Captain Palmer, Sealdah. Governor General regrets he cannot grant him an interview, would be pleased to submit his business in writing.
2731. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant R H Sankey, Madras Engineers, Allahabad. Asks for information about his brother Lieutenant M G Sankey, Artillery, who is reported to have been wounded before Delhi. Copy of reply, nothing known. Also note.
2732. November 1857. Letter from Dr F J Mouat, Calcutta. Enquiries about the future of Dr Leibig. Copy of reply, Private Secretary knows nothing.
2733. November 1857. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Foreign Department. Sends the Durbar Accounts for Sep and Oct (no longer enclosed).
2733a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to Sir Colin Campbell, Cawnpore. Sending for his information a letter from Captain Barlow to Major Atkinson. His news in Calcutta is anxiously awaited.
2734. November 1857. Letter from Major Grant Allan, Calcutta. Asks for civil or political employment. Copy of reply, application noted. Also original reply returned.
2735. November 1857. Letter from Mr Thomas Melliss, indigo planter, Purneah. Repeats his request for European troops to protect Purneah. Copy of reply, none can be spared. See also 2669, 2742, 2767.
2736. October to November 1857. Letter from Mr P J Trinter, Negapatam. Asks for an uncovenanted appointment. Copy of reply, refused.
2737. November 1857. Letter from Assistant Surgeon T J Duthoit, 25th Bengal Native Infantry, Moulmein. Asks for the Civil Surgeoncy at Moulmein. See also 2791.
2738. November 1857. Letter from Captain F P Layard, 2nd class executive officer, in charge of the Nezamut buildings, Berhampore. Asks to be made Agent to the Governor General at Moorshedabad. Copy of reply, application noted.
2739. November 1857. Letter from Major Henry Hopkinson, Officiating Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. Encloses a confidential note from Bishop Bigandet, containing reports on the state of affairs at Ava and Pegu. The news reports on the state of affairs at Ava and Pegu. The news of Delhi and Lucknow has been circulated. The 'Penelope' has arrived. Copy of reply about this.
2740. November 1857. Letter from Mr James Scott, Calcutta. Asks for information about Lieutenant John Henderson Lamb, 8th Battalion, Foot Artillery, said to have been wounded at Agra. Copy of reply, Lieutenant Lamb died of wounds. See also 2642.
2741. November 1857. Letter from Colonel W B Goodfellow, Commandant of Engineers and Superintending Engineer Northern Provinces, Poona. Asks to be made Chief Engineer of Public Works. Copy of reply, the appointment is in the gift of the Governor of Bombay.
2742. November 1857. Letter from Mr T Melliss, indigo planter, Purneah. The position at Purneah is growing more unsafe, the 73rd Native Infantry at Jalpigoree is daily expected to break out. Asks for European troops. Encloses copy of a letter to the 'Englishman'. Copy of reply, sending copy of earlier reply (as in number 2735 above). See also 2669, 2735, 2767.
2743. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel R Strachey, Secretary to the Government Central Provinces, Benares. Encloses a letter from Mr C Chester about Peroo Mull and others mentioned in Mr Palmer's letter. Their claims will be taken into consideration when the Lieutenant Governor reaches Allahabad. Copies of 3 earlier letters to Grant about this. See also 2411, 2477, 4292.

2745. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant A F Corbett, 43rd Regiment Light Infantry, Barrackpore. Asks for a civil appointment in Oudh. Copy of reply, application noted.
2746. November 1857. Letter from Mr W S Morley, Calcutta. Repeats his request for employment and money. Four letters. Copy of reply, declined. Memorandum. See also 2618.
2747. November 1857. Letter from Captain H Bruce, Superintendent of Police, Cawnpore. Submits a copy of a news sheet he is publishing at Cawnpore. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2747a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to the Honourable F Bruce, Hong Kong. Reporting the success of Sir Colin Campbell at Lucknow; gives news of the state of affairs in parts of India.
2748. November 1857. Letter from Mr M J D'Gruyther Esquire, Chunar. Sends a parcel for Lady Canning and a letter for the Governor General. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgement.
2749. November 1857. Letter from the Honourable Sir J Colvile, Chief Justice, Port William. Introduces Captain O Jones, Royal Navy, HMS 'Hannibal'. Two notes about this. Governor General's Book number 64.
2750. November 1857. Letter from Mr M E Currie, Calcutta. Submits a pamphlet on land tenure, and the police system of Bengal.
2750a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to Lord Elphinstone. Sending a despatch from General Windham to show what desperate resistance may be expected in Oudh. The Commander-in-Chief has taken the women and children out of the Residency at Lucknow. General Windham has had an encounter with a portion of the Gwalior Contingent, which he defeated. The remainder of the 34th Native Infantry have mutinied at Chittagong. When this was heard at Dacca the authorities tries to disarm the 73rd Native Infantry who however knew what was intended. They were attacked and driven out by some sailors. There is some cholera in Calcutta, of which the Colonel of Her Majesty's 19th died.
