Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2751 to 2800 consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 28 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2701 to 2800’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2756, 2758, 2759, 2762, 2763, 2764, 2767, 2768, 2774, 2775, 2776, 2778, 2779, 2782, 2785, 2786, 2787, 2792 and 2795 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
2751. November 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Calcutta. With reference to an article in the 'Englishman' as to the Andamans being made the safest retreat for the King of Delhi, recommends as an additional security that Her Majesty's yacht or prison-ship be manned with Buddhists. He can induce the inhabitants of the Nicobar Islands to emigrate to the Andamans, and urges the expediency of this. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 2807.
2752. November 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Calcutta. Submits a memorandum with comments on his claim for compensation for loss of his property in Rangoon. Copies of 2 replies, should be submitted through the Foreign Department.
2753. November 1857. Letter from Mr L Bowring, Calcutta. Asks to see Mr Tayler's correspondence about his removal from the Patna Commissionership; sends a box about the Hyderabad squabble for the Governor General. Memorandum, letters to be sent.
2754. October to November 1857. Letter from Colonel H M Durand, Camp Dhar. Encloses a reply and a sketch for Lady Canning, (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, with various news. Sir Colin Campbell had taken the Dilkhusha and the Martiniere at Lucknow, but no more is known because the telegraph then failed, as usual.
2754a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to the Reverend A Hamilton, Calcutta. Sending Lady Canning's donation to the Free School, and also Mrs Talbot's.
2755. November 1857. Letter from Mrs S Gill, Calcutta. Presuming that her husband's removal from his late appointment of Officiating Pay Master at Benares may have arisen from her having been reported for transgressing the rules preventing ladies from going up country, denies having done so, and asks that her husband may be restored to his position. Copy of reply, explaining that Gill was not displaced because of any act of his wife's, but in the normal course of affairs, on the return from leave of an officer. Note by Lord Dunkellin.
2756. November 1857. Letter from the Honourable F J Halliday, Alipore. Sends a letter from the Officiating Commissioner of Chittagong, and reports that the sepoys at Dacca are selling off their property preparatory to flight.
2757. November 1857. Letter from Mrs G James, widow of L E James, section writer in the Foreign Office, Calcutta. Asks for money. Copy of reply, Lady Canning sends 30 Rupees. See also 9609.
2758. November 1857. Letter from Mr T E B Judge, Calcutta. Sends a letter from his brother at Alambagh. Copy of reply, returning letter. Also note.
2759. November 1857. Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner and Agent to the Lieutenant Governor Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, Jubbulpore. States the circumstances under which he asks for a higher rank.
2760. November 1857. Letter from Mr J H Love, late Officiating Deputy Collector, Calcutta. Asks for the return of his Memorial. 5 anna stamp. Copy of reply, returning Memorial, which should be submitted through the Financial Department. See also 2724.
2761. November 1857. Letter from Baboo Praunauth Bose, Calcutta. Asks for an interview for himself and friend, with the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, refused. Further letter from the Baboo, sending copies of earlier letters and asking why he is now addressed in 'such inferior way'.
2762. October to November 1857. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Calcutta. Forwards a memorandum on the Mutiny for the Governor General (no longer enclosed).
2763. November 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, Civil Service Calcutta. Asks if there is likely to be delay in the disposal of his case. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2764. November 1857. Letter from Captain H Yule, Calcutta. Submits with remarks an unfinished tracing of the Allahabad entrenchment, (no longer enclosed).
2765. November 1857. Letter from Mr L J Sansoni, Calcutta. Asks for the Private Secretary's interest on his behalf to obtain some employment. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has nothing to do with the disposal of uncovenanted offices.
2766. November 1857. Letter from Mr F Adams, Calcutta. States that he belonged to the Magnetic Survey in which his services are no longer required owing to the Mutiny, and asks for employment; (letter no longer in cover). Copy of letter transferring this application to the Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal; copy of reply to Adams to this effect.
2767. November 1857. Letter from Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor, Alipore. States that there is no recent intelligence of danger from Purneah with reference to Mr Meliss' application for aid. See also 2699 2735, 2742.
2768. May to November 1857. Letter from Dr F P Strong, Surgeon to the Mysore Princes, London.
Asks for an extension of his furlough, on medical certificate (copy enclosed). If he is to be deprived of his appointment on the grounds of age, he asks that his case be recommended to the Honourable Court of Directors for a suitable pension. Note from Mr Beadon about this case.
2769. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant W C Hamilton, Assistant Commissioner Saugor Division, Saugor. Applies for an appointment as 3rd class Deputy Commissioner in Oudh and submits copies of 2 letters as testimonials.
2770. November 1857. Letter from Major C Herbert, 18th Native Infantry, Alipore. Asks to be agent to the Governor General at Moorshedabad. Copy of reply, application noted.
2771. November 1857. Letter from Major C Herbert, Calcutta. Acknowledges Private Secretary's letter (reply to number 2770 above). See also 2770.
2772. November 1857. Letter from Mr M Cross, Madras. Submits 2 letters of introduction from Sir James Emerson Tennent and Lord Monteagle, asks for employment; should there be no opening in the Bengal Presidency or the North West Provinces asks for an introduction to Lord Harris (Letters of introduction no longer enclosed). Copy of letter to Lord Harris, sending a copy of reply sent to Cross (no longer enclosed) reporting the relief of Lucknow and the casualties of the relieving forces; written 21 Nov. 2773. August to November 1857. Letter from Sir James Emerson Tennant, Board of Trade, London. Introduces Mr Maurice Cross. Copy of reply to Mr Cross, asking what kind of employment he seeks, and which, if any, of the native languages he knows. See also 2772, 2913.
2774. September 1857. Letter from Sir John Bowring, Hong Kong. Recommends his son Mr L B Bowring, Civil Service.
2775. November 1857. Letter from Colonel W E Baker, Calcutta. Sends a sketch of Lucknow (no longer enclosed) by Mr Thomas Login and states Mr Login's services. 2 letters. Memorandum from Lord Canning asking Private Secretary for the sketch.
2776. November 1857. Letter from Mr F F Cockburn, Collector of Customs, Calcutta. Asks for information about Lieutenant W O Swanston and Lieutenant O L Smith, 48th Native Infantry, who were in Lucknow. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has no information beyond that published.
2777. November 1857. Letter from Mrs E Grey, Calcutta. Asks to know the result of her appeal, sent with a medical certificate, asks for money. Memorandum that appeal and certificate transferred to Dr Vos. Copy of reply, referring her to the District Charitable Society. See also 2783, 2831.
2778. November 1857. Letter from the Honourable F J Halliday, Alipore. Submits for the information of the Commander-in-Chief two letters from a young officer (no longer enclosed) who might be entrusted with 200 Europeans.
2779. November 1857. Letter from Mr W Cobb Hurry, Calcutta. Will publish the Private Secretary's note about the treatment of the King of Oudh; he has a letter which states that the King has been executed, but this may be a mistake. Copy of note from Lord Canning, that no information of Sir Colin Campbell having been wounded has reached him; the papers should be told this. Probably a previous message was interrupted.
2780. November 1857. Letter from Colonel T J Nuthall, Commissary General, Calcutta. Replies it is not expedient to accept the offer of flour made by Messrs Atkinson and Company who have been informed accordingly.
2782. November 1857. Letter from Mr C B Wood, Calcutta. Asks which Lieutenant Wood Her Majesty's 93rd Highlanders was the one reported wounded. There are two officers of the name in this regiment; his brother Lieutenant E S Wood belonging to the Grenadier Company is the senior officer. Copy of reply, the original telegram did not specify which Lieutenant Wood.
2783. November 1857. Letter from Dr Vos, Secretary to the District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Replies about Mrs J M Brown and Mrs E Grey's applications for aid. Copy of earlier letter sending Mrs Brown's application. See also 2777, 2831.
2784. November 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna, Calcutta. Encloses a copy of an official letter submitted to the Government, through the Home Secretary, about his removal from the Commissionership, and asks that if his case is to be further delayed, the Lieutenant Governor may be instructed to provide him with suitable employment. Copy of reply, returning enclosures, which have been submitted to the Governor General.
2785. November 1857. Letter from the Reverend Dr Kay, Bishop's College. Subedits a note from Mr Thornhill (no longer enclosed) which implies that Ram Chunder has escaped, and that the statement about the horrors of the Cawnpore sufferers has been exaggerated. Note by Lord Canning; copy of letter to W Muir Esquire, Agra, asking him to collect evidence to show that the Englishwomen and girls were not violated in the recent disturbances except in rare instances. Private.
2786. November 1857. Letter from Dr D Macpherson, Surgeon, Madras Establishment, Bangalore. Suggests using light ambulance carts to remove sick and wounded from the field, based on those used in the French armies, instead of Doolies. During the Russian war he organised an ambulance corps. See also 1996, 2964.
2787. November 1857. Letter from Captain B E Bacon, 50th Native Infantry. Asks if any correct report has been received about the death of Captain A A Beecher, 50th Native Infantry. Endorsed note that there is no information save that on the official list. Enclosed: Nominal Roll of European officers on the Staff and of Corps of all arms, killed and wounded with General Havelock's force since leaving Cawnpore 29 September 1857.
2788. November 1857. Copy of letter to Captain H Bruce, Cawnpore. His letter has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
2789. November 1857. Letter from Mr W Moore, Howrah. Asks for a gratuity of 6 months salary, and a grant of land. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Government of Bengal. See also 2042, 2876.
2790. November 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel O Cavenagh, Calcutta. Forwards testimonials in favour of Captain Hamilton, Assistant Commissioner Hyderabad Assigned Districts. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 2627.
2791. November 1857. Letter from Dr T J Duthoit, Assistant Surgeon in medical charge, 25th Bengal Native Infantry Moulmein. Applies to be Civil Surgeon at Moulmein. Copy of reply, application noted. Two notes from Mr Edmonstone about this appointment. See also 2737.
2792. September to November 1857. Letter from the Reverend H C Hamilton, Ghazeepore. Sends a small portrait of the self-styled Nazim of Goruckpore, and states that a man from Futtyghur reports that 3 or 4 European women and children whom the Nana Sahib had brought away from the boats on their way down were murdered by him a few days after their seizure, including one of the Miss Goldies. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2793. November 1857. Letter from Dr John Hilliard MD, Surgeon late 50th Native Infantry, Benares.
Applies to be Civil Surgeon at Patna. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
2795. November 1857. Letter from Mr Robert Turnbull, Secretary to the Municipal Commissioners for the improvement of the town of Calcutta. Forwards 12 copies of the 13th Annual Report of the proceedings of the late Municipal Board for 1856, (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2797. November to December 1857. Letter from Baboo Greedhur Bose Roy and Co Projectors of the Charitable School at Gurranhatta, Calcutta. Asks for aid toward the school. Copy of reply, declined.
2798. November 1857. Letter from Mr D J Money, Civil Service, Calcutta. Asks for Captain E Money to be made Gunpowder Agent at Ishapore.
2799. November to December 1857. Letter from Lieutenant W C R Mylne, 74th Native Infantry, Sub Assistant Commissary General, Cawnpore. States his services and asks for a civil appointment in Oudh. Note from Mr Edmonstone. Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2800. December 1857. Memorandum of Private Secretary to Lord Canning. Sending copies of letters from Colonel Birch to the Adjutant General and Secretary to the Government of Bengal about liquor shops; and asking for orders about the reply to Mr Gardener who sent an appeal on behalf of the City Mission (memorandum only) Memorandum in reply, 1 Dec, about these matters, from Governor General.
