Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2801 to 2850 consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 29 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2801 to 2900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2801, 2807, 2808, 2813, 2814, 2817, 2819, 2819a, 2820, 2821, 2822, 2825, 2827, 2828, 2831, 2833, 2840, 2841, 2847, 2849 and 2850 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
2801. November 1857. Letter from Mr E Radcliffe, Additional Civil and Sessions Judge of Chittagong. Asks for information about his brother Captain C W Radcliffe, 7th Bengal Cavalry. Chittagong has been in great peril in consequence of the late Mutiny and European troops are anxiously expected. Note from Atkinson about Captain Radcliffe. Copy of reply. Nothing certain is known of Captain Radcliffe; his wife and children are named among the survivors of Lucknow, and it is to be feared that Captain Radcliffe is dead.
2802. November 1857. Letter from Mr V F Thomas, Catechist, Galilipuram Royapettah, Madras. Submits a printed prospectus of his Tamil work 'Discourse between a Casipandarain and a Christian' in which the folly of Hinduism is exposed, and asks the Governor General to subscribe.
2803. December 1857. Letter from Mr J C Imbert, Assistant in the Military Department, Calcutta. Asks for money, with 2 original enclosures. Copy of reply, declining, and returning enclosures. See also 2839.
2804. December 1857. Letter from Mr W Edwards, Civil Service, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed Governor General's Agent at Moorshedabad, Copy of reply, application noted. See also 482.
2806. November to December 1857. Letter from Mr F W Place, Benares. Asks for an answer to his earlier letter to the Private Secretary. See also 2699.
2807. December 1857. Letter from Mr M C Crisp, Calcutta. With reference to an article in one of the newspapers pointing him out as a fit person to colonize the Andamans, enclosing a copy of his reply written for the press, stating his peculiar qualifications to establish a colony in the Nicobar Islands. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 2751.
2808. November 1857. Memorandum of News. Published under the authority of Captain H Bruce, Superintendent of Police, Cawnpore, 19 Nov 1857, announcing the relief of Lucknow and the casualties there.
2809. November 1857. Letter from Dr Leckie. Asks for news about Colonel Gray, commanding the Infantry Brigade, to be communicated to Mr Wylie, as Mrs Gray is in a delicate state of health.
2810. November 1857. Letter from Mrs E Grey, Calcutta. Asks for money. See also 2777, 2783.
2811. December 1857. Letter from Lieutenant W A Garden, 39th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Asks to be Officiating Assistant to the Superintendent of Cachar. Copy of reply, the Governor General has issued final orders in regard to this vacancy.
2813. December 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Calcutta. Sends a letter from his son just received from Rangoon, referring to a letter from Ameerapora from Mr Calogreedy to the effect that the King was restraining the Prince and others from hostile feelings towards the British Government.
2814. December 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, Civil Service, Calcutta. Asks to know the result of the last application to the Governor General. Endorsed verbally answered.
2815. November to December 1857. Letter from Mr G W West, Inspecting Post Master, Cannour Division, Nuggur and Coorg, Camp, Macara Coorg. Asks for reinstatement of his son as Inspector of Telegraph, or another appointment. Three 1/2 anna stamps. See also 2359, 2578.
2816. October to November 1857. Letter from Mr C A Rocke, Tounghoo. Has applied to the Lieutenant Governor Central Provinces for any appointment in Bengal, and asks the Governor General to confirm the appointment, should he be nominated. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not foresee any occasion on which he can avail himself of Rocke's services.
2817. November 1857. Letter from Mr H Stainforth, Calcutta. Submits a letter from Mr Chapman, Acting Commissioner of Chittagong, detailing particulars of the recent mutiny there of the 34th Native Infantry. 1/2 anna stamp.
2817a. November 1857. Copy of a letter to Dr H Macpherson. Thanking him for his letter and the tables enclosed.
2818. November 1857. Letter from Mr H Pennitz, a volunteer of the Calcutta Infantry Guard. Asks for money.
2819. November 1857. Letter from Mr T W Lidiard, Railway Audit Department, Howrah. Asks for information about the mutiny of 3 companies of the 34th Native Infantry at Chittagong. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has no reliable reports, apply to Government of Bengal.
2819a. December 1857. Copy of a letter to the President of the India Board, London. Sending copies of 7 letters between Colonel Ramsay and the Governor General about the employment of Nepalese troops to aid the British troops. Governor General's Book numbers 678, 679.
2820. November 1857. Letter from Mr W Cobb Hurry, Calcutta. Returns letters sent to him for information. He has been told good Persian horses for draught can be bought in the Persian Gulf (letters no longer enclosed). Copy of earlier letter sending papers to show the admirable spirit in which the people of Sydney have met the endeavour to obtain Australian horses for the Indian Service. Animals are also being sent from the Cape of Good Hope, Pegu, and the Tenasserirn Provinces.
2821. November 1857. Letter from the Right Reverend the Bishop of Calcutta, Serampore. Acknowledges thankfully the news of the relief of Lucknow.
2822. November 1857. Letter from the Reverend Arthur Hamilton, Calcutta. Asks if the report of the death of Captain A H A Anson at Jellalabad is true.
2823. November 1857. Letter from the Reverend Arthur Hamilton, Calcutta. In reply states the Mr Edward Anson was to have left England by the steamer of 20 Nov. 2 Memoranda about Mr Anson. 3 English stamps 4d and 1d.
2824. July to November 1857. Letter from Mr E H Anson, Civil Service, England. Asks to be appointed Superintendent of Hill States and Deputy Commissioner at Simla. Copy of reply, there are many applications for this post from officers with a greater claim. See also 2823.
2825. November 1857. Letter from Mr C O Cantor, Calcutta. Asks for information about Lieutenant Colonel G Biddulph, commanding the Sikh volunteers. Copy of reply, nothing known except what has been published.
2826. December 1857. Letter from Captain E P Lloyd, 24th Bengal Native Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for civil employment, states his services. See also 2838.
2827. December 1857. Letter from Mrs J Watson, Calcutta. Asks if the sick and wounded from Lucknow accompanied the Commander in Chief to Cawnpore; her husband is one of the wounded. Copy of reply, the sick and wounded were taken to Cawnpore.
2828. December 1857. Letter from Captain F Palmer, Agent to the wife of Gholam Hoosain, Calcutta. Asks if the Government has come to any decision about the fate of Moonshee Gholam Hoosain. Second letter, renewing request for information before the Governor General departs to the Provinces. Note from Mr Edmonstone about this. Copy of reply, apply to Secretary to Government Foreign Department for information.
2829. December 1857. Letter from Mr W G Carrison, Apothecary, Invalid Establishment, Calcutta.
Asks to be readmitted to the service of the Government, and states his services, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, apply to Military Department.
2830. December 1857. Copy of reply to Mr Richard West, Mysore. His application has been transferred to Colonel Nuthall, the head of the Commissariat Department. See also 2561.
2831. December 1857. Letter from Mr F W Place, Benares. Acknowledges Private Secretary's letter. The Government notification about private property found in Delhi is satisfactory. If Simla is to be the headquarters of Government, he will go there. Colonel Franks is expected and troops are being detained. Mutinous sepoys brought into Benares are tried by court martial and punished. He does not know where the leave sepoys go to. With regard to the relief order, is the pittance offered to Europeans not in the service compensation in full, or for temporary relief? Note to Beadon about relief; Beadon's reply. Copy of reply to Mr Place, Private Secretary believes the relief order refers to relief and not to compensation. See also 2539, 2699, 3356.
2832. November to December 1857. Letter from Lieutenant D A McNeill, 15th Madras Native Infantry, Madras. Sends documents to show he left the Public Works Department from redundancy and not his inefficiency; asks for an appointment, preferably in Mysore. Copy of reply, should apply to Sir Mark Cubbon.
2833. November to December 1857. Letter from the Honourable E A Blundell, Singapore. Reports that all continues quiet at Singapore. Complains about mutineers being sent out as convicts, as they have no means of guarding them. Note from Mr Beadon, no more prisoners are to be sent to Penang or Singapore. Copy of reply informing Blundell of this. See also 2976.
2834. December 1857. Letter from Mr H C Wake, Magistrate of Shahabad, Arrah. Asks for a change of employment. Copy of reply, application noted. Governor General's Book number 559.

2840. December 1857. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling. Reports the measures decided upon by Captain Curzon in consequence of Mr Gouldsbury, Commissioner of Beauleah having reported that the mutineers of the 73rd Native Infantry at Dacca had moved on Mymesingh en route to Julpigoree. 2841. December 1857. Letter from Colonel A Abbott, Inspector General of Ordnance and Magazine, Calcutta. In reply, about help needed by some officers' wives; the only one he knows of is Mrs Cross; he will make further enquiries. Copy of reply about this. See also 2861.
2842. December 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Howrah. Renews his application for gratuity. See also 2789, 2876.
2843. November to December 1857. Letter from Captain S Mainwaring, 2nd Madras Native Infantry, Interpreter to the Commander in Chief, Ootacamond. Asks for employment in the Mysore Commission and states his services. Copy of reply, no vacancy. See also 3384, 3633.
2844. December 1857. Letter from Mr John D'Cruz, Calcutta. Encloses a petition asking for a situation, with testimonials. Copy of reply, refusal, testimonials returned.
2845. December 1857. Letter from Mr L J Sansoni, Calcutta. Asks for a letter of recommendation to the Collector of Customs, for a post. Copy of reply, refusal.
2846. October to December 1857. Letter from Mr H Raven, British Consul, Trieste. Acknowledges a Bill of Exchange for some expenses incurred by him. See also 2390.
2847. December 1857. Letter from Major General Sir Robert Garrett, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the information about the fate of his cousin, which will be melancholy news for the Dashwood family.
2848. November to December 1857. Letter from Captain J Eliot, Executive Engineer Barrackpore Division. Forwards estimate for making repairs to the civil buildings at Barrackpore (no longer enclosed).
2849. December 1857. Letter from Mr W Edwards, Civil Service Calcutta. Submits a letter from his brother containing information about the state of the country in and around Meerut, and observes that it only requires the occupation of Futtehghur to restore British rule there and elsewhere. Copy of reply, returning the letter with thanks.
2850. December 1857. Letter from Mr E B G McDougall, Calcutta. Asks for information about Mr W C Thomas, a volunteer in the Yeomanry Cavalry with General Havelock. Copy of reply, nothing known.
