Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 2851 to 2900 consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 29 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 2801 to 2900’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 2852a, 2853, 2856, 2857, 2858, 2861, 2862, 2863, 2867a, 2870, 2874, 2878, 2884, 2889, 2890, 2891, 2892, 2893, 2894, 2898, 2899 and 2900 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
2851. December 1857. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of Barrackpore Park. Reports the death of a rhinceros, and that the tiger is unwell.
2852. November to December 1857. Letter from Mr R D Turnbull, Secretary to the Municipal Commission, Calcutta. Forwards copies of the 13th Report of the late Municipal Board for 1856, (no longer enclosed).
2852a. November to December 1857. Packet. Labelled: Papers connected with the detention of the opium steamer 'Fiery Cross', which was held up by the Private Secretary's order to take a despatch to China; the owners, Jardine Skinner and Company complained of the delay. 19 papers.
2853. October to Decemer 1857. Letter from Dr F P Strong, Surgeon to the Mysore Princes, London
Asks for his memorial to be forwarded to the Honourable Court, (enclosed). Note from Mr Beadon that Dr Strong's case was sent home to England with the opinion of the Governor General in Council. Copy of reply to Dr Strong to this effect. See also 2768.
2854. December 1857. Letter from Rajah Ram Chunder Sing son of the Maharajah of Jyntiah [?]
Asks for an interview. Note from Mr Edmonstone, advising refusal; the man maltreated some Europeans and was deprived of his possessions. Copy of reply, refusal.
2855. October to December 1857. Letter from Earl Talbot, London. Recommends Dr Charles Harland.
2856. December 1857. Letter from the Reverend R A H Norman, Dum Dum. About a Christmas Tree for the children of the Depot at Dum Dum. Memorandum from Lady Canning about this, and copies of 2 replies.
2857. December 1857. Letter from Mr J J Mackenzie, Calcutta. Replies that the planters will be very grateful for the protection of the Yeomanry Cavalry at Mozufferpore. Copy of earlier letter, the Governor General hopes to be able to send the Yeomanry Cavalry to Mozufferpore.
2658. December 1857. Letter from Mr R Marriott, Civil Service, Calcutta. Asks for information about his brother, Her Majesty's 32nd Regiment at Cawnpore. Copy of a reply to another letter of Mr Marriott's, returning a letter he sent to the Governor General for information.
2860a. December 1857. Copy of a letter to Captain S Greville, 1st European Bengal Fusiliers, Dugshaie. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
2861. December 1857. Letter from Colonel A Abbott, Calcutta. Reports the straitened circumstances of the wives of officers cut off from their husbands, and suggests the Government should make advances to such ladies, the sums to be deducted from their husbands' salaries. Copy of reply, asking for a list of such ladies. See also 2841.
2862. December 1857. Letter from Mr A Grote, Civil Service, Alipore. Asks for information about C Cunliffe, Civil Service, Lieutenant F J Cunliffe, Lieutenant C P Lewin and Captain R B Francis, at Lucknow. Copy of reply, nothing known.
2863. December 1857. Letter from Mr W Grey, Revenue Board, Calcutta. Asks for the sight of any list at Government House of the ladies brought away from Lucknow. Copy of reply, no list has yet been received.
2864. November to December 1857. Letter from Mr H D E Dalrymple, Madras. Asks to be Acting Post Master General of the Madras Presidency. Copy of reply, no acting vacancy.
2865. November to December 1857. Letter from Mr H D E Dalrymple, Madras. Withdraws the application (as in number 2864 above). Copy of reply (as in number 2864 above).
2866. November 1857. Lemorandum from Lord Canning, and Private Secretary. About Dr Mouatt and Dr Liebig, a Professor of Science of high qualifications, who might be remanded to regimental duty. See also 2732.
2867. December 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel A Cunningham, Chief Engineer, Pegu and Tenasserim, Rangoon. Asks to be appointed to the charge of the Calcutta Mint, and names referees. Note from Mr Beadon about this appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 3086, 3087.
2868. December 1857. Letter from Dr James Allan FRCS, Assistant Surgeon, 34th Native Infantry, Barrackpore. Asks to be Photographer to the Government of Bengal, should such an appointment be made; sends a letter from the Court of Directors (enclosed) and 12 photographs (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgement.
2869. December 1857. Letter from Mr A R Young, Secretary to Government of Bengal, Calcutta. Asks for information about Sahib Allum Sultan Timoor Mirza alia Sultan Tazul Moolk Faris who claims to be a personal friend of the Governor General. Copy of reply, he is a fraud. See also 1567, 1848, 1889, 2318.
2869a. December 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner, Patna, Calcutta. Having heard that Mr Farquharson had denied certain statements made by Tayler in his defence, submits a copy of Mr Farouharson's letter containing the suggestion that the Europeans at Patna should put themselves under the protection of Her Majesty's 10th Regiment and the guns, as evidence. Copy of reply, acknowledgement. See also 2870.
2870. December 1857. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner, Patna, Calcutta. Asks for a copy of Mr Farquharson's letter denying that he ever suggested claiming the protection of Her Majesty's 10th Regiment (as above, number 2689a) so that Tayler may refute the letter. Copy of reply, such a request should be made to the Public Secretary to the Government of India. See also 2869a.
2871. December 1857. Letter from Mr J Graham, barrister of the Supreme Court, Calcutta. Applies to be Officiating Standing Counsel to the Honourable East India Company in place of Mr J H Cowie, on leave. Copy of reply, his application will be considered. Governor General's Book numbers 728, 729.
2872. December 1857. Letter from Messrs Stewart and Company, coach builders, Calcutta. Complain that Government House Treasurer will not pay a bill against Captain Metcalfe. Copy of reply about this.
2874. December 1857. Letter from Mr J Stephen, Serampore. Asks if all is safe at Amritsar where his brother is. Copy of reply, there is no news to the contrary.
2875. December 1857. Letter from Mr J H B Money, barrister at law, Calcutta. Applies to be Acting Company's Counsel. Copy of reply, his application will be considered. Governor General's Book number 728, 729.
2876. December 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Howrah. Asks for a reply to his last letter asking for a gratuity. Copy of reply from Private Secretary sending 20 Rupees. See also 2789, 2842.
2877. December 1857. Letter from Mr O Toogood, Civil Service, Bengal Club, Calcutta. Asks to be appointed to the Moorshedabad agency. Encloses testimonial.
2878. December 1857. Letter from Captain J B Caldbeck, Calcutta. Reports that after alterations the 'Hindoostan' would convey 300 horses satisfactorily, and recommends purchase by the Government, not hire of the vessel. Copy of reply about this.
2879. December 1857. Letter from Mr Edmund Onslow, late Harbour Master of Calcutta. Asks to be reinstated. Note from Mr Beadon, Onslow was dismissed by Lord Dalhousie for repeated misconduct, he should never be re-employed. Copy of reply, refusal.
2880. December 1857. Letter from Mr F Adams, Calcutta. Asks for letter of recommendation to Lieutenant Governor. Copy of reply, Private Secretary will send a letter; copy of letter to Captain Raban, Private Secretary to Lieutenant Governor. See also 2766, 3302.
2881. December 1857. Letter from Mr N A Chick, Register in the Marine Superintendent's Office, Calcutta. Asks for a better appointment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 2910.
2882. December 1857. Letter from Colonel Colin Mackenzie, Madras Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for the acting appointment at Moorshedabad, states his services (a printed pamphlet).
2883. December 1857. Letter from Captain E St George, 1st European Bengal Fusiliers, Calcutta. Asks for detached employment. Copy of reply, application noted.
2884. December 1857. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling. Reports that Captain Curzon had received on the 4th most urgent orders to push on to Madargungee on the road from Rungpore to Julpigoree where Captain Tickell's detachment awaited the Dacca mutineers; news had reached Julpigoree that the mutineers had crossed the Burrunpooter. See also 2840, 2890, 2891, and 2892.
2885. December 1857. Letter from Baboo Khetter Mohun Chatterjee, Assistant Civil Auditor, Calcutta. Asks for confirmation of Mr George Campbell's statement (with regard to his salary) that he had been in Calcutta under special instructions from the Governor General. Copy of reply about this. 2886. December 1857. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Howrah. Gratefully acknowledges 20 Rupees sent to him by Private Secretary.
2887. December 1857. Letter from Baboo Ketter Mohun Chatterjee, Assistant Civil Auditor, Calcutta. Has passed the salary bills for Mr George Campbell. See also 2710, 2885; Telegraph Message sent number 242.
2888. December 1857. Letter from Mr M F Crisp, Calcutta. Suggests the withdrawal of forces from Burma, an altered Government in India. Two letters.
2889. December 1857. Letter from Lieutenant Edward Dandridge, Adjutant 73rd Native Infantry, Julpigoree. Asks for enquiries to be made about the revolvers reported to have come out by the last mail as they are much needed; reports the alacrity with which the sepoys at Julpigoree have distributed muskets and ammunition to the Gurkhas to fight against other sepoys, the Dacca mutineers; the loyal sepoys have taken a voluntary oath to do their duty.
2890. December 1857. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Darjeeling. Reports Captain Curzon's movements. See also 2840, 2884, 2891, 2892.
2891. December 1857. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Darjeeling. Reports that he has despatched an express to warn Colonel Sherer of the departure of Captain Curzon from Punkabari, and states that from what he has heard of the non-approach of the Dacca mutineers Captain Curzon will be in time to place himself between them and the 73rd. Encloses a sketch of the country. He has remained at Darjeeling to reassure the timid. See also 2840, 2884, 2890, 2892.
2892. December 1857. Letter from the Honourable F J Halliday, Alipore. Returns Dr Campbell's letter and sends one from Mr Gordon about the Dacca mutineers; other news of movements of the fugitive sowars. Copy of earlier letter sending Halliday Campbell's letter. See also 2840, 2884, 2890, 2891.
2893. December 1857. Letter from the Honourable F J Halliday, Alipore. Sends a letter for information (no longer enclosed) and states that the 1st 50 sowars were last heard of at Thakoorgunge en route to Oudh through Purneah, and they may meet Mr Yule or Jung Bahadoor. Unfortunately the telegraph is out of order.
2894. December 1857. Letter from Captain J S Davies, Assistant Commissioner, Purneah. Asks for information about Mrs Snele wife of Lieutenant G Snele, 64th Native Infantry and daughter, supposed to have been killed at Seetapore. Note about this; copy of reply, nothing is known, but as her name of Mrs Snele did not occur in the Lucknow lists, there is little hope that she escaped.
2895. December 1857. Letter from Mr P J Truter, Negapatam. Asks for the Private Secretary's aid in obtaining employment in the Telegraph Department in Madras. See also 2736.
2897. December 1857. Letter from Captain E P Lloyd, 24th Native Infantry, Calcutta. States his services and asks for civil employment. See also 2826, 2838.
2898. December 1857. Letter from Mr W Grey, Calcutta. Repeats his request for information about certain people in Lucknow. Copy of reply, nothing known. See also 2862.
2899. December 1857. Letter from Colonel G H Macgregor CB, Bath Calcutta. Returns the correspondence with Colonel Ramsay on the subject of Jung Bahadoor's offer of Gurkhas and sends a copy of his testimonials.
2900. November 1857. Letter from Mr D C Mackey, Chairman of the Assam Company, Calcutta. Asks for at least a steamer and 200 regular troops to be despatched for the protection of Assam. Extract from a letter attached. Note about this; copy of reply, acknowledgement.
