‘No. 31 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 3051 to 3100

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3051 to 3100, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 31 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3001 to 3100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3060, 3062, 3063, 3068, 3069, 3072, 3074, 3083, 3084, and 3099 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3051. January 1858. Letter from Baboo Greedhur Bose Roy and Company, Projectors, Calcutta. Forward an application for a donation towards the Vernacular Charitable School at Chitpore.
3052. January 1858. Letter from Baboo Lall Mohun Mullick, Calcutta. Applies to be Deputy Superintendent of the Government, Toshakhana. Copy of reply, apply to Foreign Department.
3054. January 1858. Letter from Mr T C Fenwick, Calcutta. Suggests the formation of a detective police force, and offers his services. Copy of reply, declined.
3055. January 1858. Letter from Captain J P Nixon, Assistant Political Agent, Bhurtpore. States that he was led to expect the permanent Agency at Bhurtpore from the Governor General's message annexed, and therefore gave up the appointment of the Neemuch Superintendent and asks the Government's intentions towards himself. Memorandum by Private Secretary. Copy of reply to Nixon, Governor General does not intend at present to fill up the Bhurtpore appointment. Governor General's Book number 405; See also 2610, 2925. 3056. January 1858. Letter from Captain F J Travers, Royal Artillery. Asks for permission to see the King of Oudh before Travers leaves. Copy of reply, as the King is a state prisoner only the officials may see him, and what are his reasons? See also 3057½.
3057. January 1858. Letter from Mr Charles Rutledge, Calcutta. Submits a Memorial, he was a clerk in the Judicial Commissioner's office in Oudh, and was wounded at Lucknow, asks for an appointment, suggesting possibilities. Copy of reply, apply to Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
3057a. January 1858. Letter from Captain F J Travers, Royal Artillery, Calcutta. Apologises for asking to see the King of Oudh, his motive was curiosity. He is grateful for the promise of seeds, which he is to take for Sir George Gray, and the Cape Town Botanical Gardens. Note from Dr Thomson, Superintendent of the Botanical Gardens, the seeds for the Cape will be got ready. See also 3056.
3059a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to H B Harington Esquire, Civil Service. No permission has been given to ladies to return to any station above Patna and Chapra.
3060. January 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel G Ramsay, Resident, Nepal. About Jung Bahadoor's disappointment in the matter of his salute; Ramsay had previously explained to him that as Commander-in-Chief of Nepal he was not entitled to the same number of guns as was the representative of his King. He wishes to be referred to upon any complaints of the Maharajah. Copy of a letter from Jung Bahadoor. Note from Mr Simson; memorandum from Lord Canning; list of letters from Major Ramsay taken out from the bundle; numbers 2023, 2024, 2033, 2126, 2271, 2571, 2580, 3060. Copy of earlier letter to Ramsay about the salute. Copy of reply to Ramsay, the Governor General has conceded to the Maharajah Jung Bahadoor the 19 gun salute he had as Ambassador from Nepal in India and Ceylon, on his way to England, and the arrangement cannot now be altered. 3062. January 1858. Letter from Lieutenant P Stewart, Officiating Superintendent, Electric Telegraph in India, Calcutta. Reports the receipt of a message from Agra, that the line to Delhi was completed, and the line from Agra to Peshawur was expected to be open by 10th February. If the Governor General wishes to make use of the line, two days would suffice for a message to the Punjab.
3063. December 1857 to January 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General Central India, Indore. Reports that Holkar has tried 997 mutineers and found them guilty, and the executions have begun; mentions those tried and sentenced by himself. He hopes to relieve Saugor by 15th January.
3064. January 1858. Letter from Dr J G Vos, Secretary to the District Charitable Society, Calcutta. Replies about Mrs E B Jones and Mrs Mary McMullin. Letter from Mrs McMullin, and note about her. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 3038.
3065a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr B Hodgson. Sending him an enclosure from the Governor General.
3068. January 1858. Letter from Mr Arthur Cocks, Special Commissioner, Mynpoorie. Suggests that a proclamation be issued through the authorities of Cawnpore, that all residents in Oudh who go quietly home will be dealt with liberally, and not punished as rebels or mutineers, Oudh being so recently a foreign territory can hardly be regarded as British. This suggestion is made in accordance with the expressed feelings of several natives of rank. Endorsed: answered by the Governor General.
3069. January 1858. Letter from Mr Dudley R Smith, merchant, Calcutta. Is glad to hear the Governor General intends to prohibit the export of saltpetre to China; suggests the probition be made at once, and Singapore be included. He sends a memorandum showing that the amount sent to China in the last 7 days is equal to 1/3 of the exports of 1857. Copy of earlier letter, that the export is to be stopped.

3071a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to W P Adam Esquire, Private Secretary, Bombay. Acknowledging the St Helena contribution to the Relief Fund.
3072. January 1858. Letter from Mr W Ritchie, Calcutta. Reports on Mrs Mary Wilson's claim to the estate of the late Mrs Mary Lavade, the property having eschaeted. See also 3073.
3074. January 1858. Letter from Major H Hopkinson, Officiating Commissioner, Rangoon. Forwards a letter from Mr Spears of 17 Dec reporting the intention of the King of Ava to send an embassy to England. The arrival of European troops has been beneficial. Her Majesty's 29th regiment's return to Rangoon is important for the Burmese. He wishes to detain the 'Penelope' until Major Phayre's arrival. The King's brother has been sending spies to Calcutta.
3076. January to February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H J Stannus, Deputy Pay Master, Meerut. Asks to be made Presidency Pay Master. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. See also 1452, 1492, 2435.
3077. January 1858. Letter from Mr W A Montrion, barrister, Calcutta. Asks to be Officiating Standing Counsel. Copy of reply, his application will be considered.
3079. January 1858. Letter from Mr G S Fagan, Calcutta. Further to his application that Cholam Hussein, the Oudh state prisoner, be let out on bail in consideration of his innocence, his long imprisonment, and his health. Note from Mr Edmonstone; copy of reply, the matter will be dealt with in due course. See also 2977.
3080. January 1858. Letter from Mr A Rutt, Calcutta. States that he is a refugee from Barh near Patna, and his allowance from the Relief Fund has been discontinued; asks for money. Copy of reply, refused.
3081a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to Mrs M A Twitchin, Calcutta. Her petition has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3082. January 1858. Copy of reply to Lieutenant A G Lilly. His letter has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3083. January 1858. Letter from Mr M H Court, Magistrate and Collector of Allahabad. In compliance with the Governor General's orders he sent his family down, but he finds that the order has not been enforced on the other residents and their families, and asks Governor General's permission for his family to return. Also letter from Mrs Court. Copies of replies to Mr and Mrs Court, refusing permission.
3084. January 1858. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna. Further to his desire for justice and protection. 1/2 anna stamp. See also 3049.

3089. December 1857 to January 1858. Letter from Dr J L Jameson, Assistant Surgeon, Her Majesty's 87th Foot, Murree. Asks to be made Civil Medical Officer at Murree.
3090. January 1858. Letter from Dr H W Graham, Assistant Surgeon 8th Punjab Infantry, Nowshera. Further to his application for the Civil Surgeoncy of the Hill Station of Murree. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, the application has been noted. See also 2652, 3360, 3375.
3091. January 1858. Letter from Mrs P Gordon, Calcutta. Asks if she will now be allowed to return to her home at Benares. Copy of reply, the prohibition remains unchanged.
3092. January 1858. Letter from Mr C Joseph, Serampore. Submits a map he has just published (no longer enclosed) Copy of reply asking for 5 more copies.
3093. January 1858. Letter from Miss Kinloch, Calcutta. Sends for transmission a telegraph to Sir Robert Hamilton, reporting that the Reverend Hamilton has been struck with paralysis. See also 3088.
3094. January 1858. Letter from Mr G H Lawrence, Calcutta. Submits a message for transmission to Mrs G St P Lawrence, Mount Aboo, Rajputana, that he is quite recovered, and will wait in Calcutta until he hears her plans. Copy of note about this by Private Secretary. Telegraph Message sent number 302.
3095. January 1858. Letter from Captain the Honourable L W Milles, Rifle Brigade, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to take Private Reeves with him to England to look after his wounds; Reeves is also a sick man. Copy of reply, if he can provide a medical certificate that Reeves' attendance is necessary, the Governor General will consider his request. See also 3096.
3096. January 1858. Letter from Captain the Honourable L W Milles. Encloses a medical certificate (as above, number 3095) Copy of letter to Major General Sir Robert Garrett K C B about this. Copies of reply (2) refusing request, as medical certificate does not show necessity. See also 3095.
3097. January 1858. Letter from Captain W D A R Short, Engineers, Calcutta. Asks if a letter of introduction for him from the Honourable Mr Kinnaird came to Lord Canning. Copy of reply, the letter came. See also 978, 9009.
3098. January 1858. Letter from Shaik Jhouree and Shaik Fokeerun, Calcutta. Complain about certain illegal acts by the European soldiers at Raneegunge. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere.
3098a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to Colonel Lugard, Companion of the Order of the Bath. Forwarding a letter to General Windham.
3099. December 1857 to January 1858. Letter from His Excellency Major General C T Van Stranbenzie C B, Commanding China Expeditionary Force, Hong Kong. Forwards a copy of his letter to Lord Elgin, urging the vital necessity of reinforcements from India for the troops in China. He intends to attack Canton, and hopes to capture it. Copy of reply, he will receive Lord Canning's official reply. Troops are still urgently needed in India.
3100. January 1858. Letter from Captain F Travers, Royal Artillery Calcutta. Asks for a copy of the plan of Lucknow and camp and ground around Cawnpore.
