‘No. 32 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 3100 to 3149

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3101 to 3149, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 32 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3101 to 3149’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3106, 3111, 3119, 3122, 3124, 3127, 3129, 3131, 3133, 3139, 3141, 3142, 3144, 3147, and 3148 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

3103. January 1858. Letter from Mr T D Forsyth, Assistant Commissioner 1st class Punjab, Umballa. Asks for employment in the disturbed provinces. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 3352.
3105. January 1858. Letter from Brigadier P Gordon, Commissioner at Benares. Reports the despatch by express dak to Juanpore, of a packet from the Private Secretary to Brigadier General Franks. Copy of earlier letter.
3015a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to Sir Robert Hamilton Bart, Indore. Returning a letter; Sir Robert's brother is much better.
3106. January 1858. Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner and Agent to the Lieutenant Governor Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, Jubbulpore. Forwards a copy of an earlier letter, asking to be made Colonel. Also letter from Erskine to W Crozier Esquire. Two 1 anna stamps.
3107. January 1858. Copy of reply to Lieutenant R Ouseley, 48th Native Infantry, Officiating Commissariat Department Head Quarters, Futtehghur. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3110. January 1858. Letter from Mr J Newmarch, Barrister, Supreme Court, Calcutta. Applies to act as Standing Counsel to the East India Company. Copy of reply, his application will be considered.
3110a. January 1858. Copy of reply to Captain James, Alipore. The Governor General is of the opinion that a note to Colonel Robbins is not necessary.
3111. January to February 1858. Letter from the Honourable E A Blundell, Governor of the Straits, Singapore. Reports the arrival of the 70th Native Infantry which will be forwarded to China when the steamers come from China. The 'Imperador' which has brought back to Singapore the native detachment sent a year ago to China will be detained for any other native regiment that may be on its way from Calcutta. No instructions have been received about the despatch of the 70th Native Infantry.
3112. February 1858. Copy of reply to Robert Craig Esquire, Calcutta (from Private Secretary at Governor General's camp, Allahabad). Private Secretary has written to Captain Yule about him. Copy of letter to Captain Yule, Officiating Secretary, to Public Works Department, Calcutta, about Craig.
3113. Letter from Mr J.W. Dalrymple in favour of Captain H. Hoseason, in Military Secretary's Correspondence. See Mss Eur F699/1/3/2/70, item 3487.
3115. February 1858. Letter from Dr J Fayrer, late Residency Surgeon, Lucknow, Calcutta. Is going on leave due to ill health, and wishes to know whether his absence will be a bar to his selection for the civil Surgeoncy of Lucknow, should such an appointment be made in his absence. Copy of reply, Governor General can give no promise that he would be appointed in his absence.
3116. February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant W W H Greathed, Deputy Consulting Engineer to Government Railway Department. Has heard that Colonel Napier has applied for his services for employment during the siege of Lucknow, and hopes that the Governor General will let him go. 2 letters. See also 3143.
3119. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr W Muir, Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Agra. Submits particulars about a Persian poem recently forwarded to the Governor General. Enclosed is a copy of the poem and an Urdu publication entitled 'The true nature of a religious war etc'. Copy of earlier letter to Muir, asking him to explain the poem.
3122. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr W Tayler, late Commissioner of Patna. Has just received the decision of the Government of India on his appeal and, finding that it is based upon a misapprehension of some expression of his in his correspondence with Major Eyre, submits an explanation. Annexed is a copy of his correspondence with Mr Bax. Two 1 anna stamps. Copy of reply, Governor General will consider his remarks when he receives them officially. See also 3209.
3123. February 1858. Letter from Mr K E Wallace, Post Master, Benares. Will give Mr Russell every possible assistance in his journey to Allahabad. Note for earlier letter, by Canning, that every facility is to be given to Russell, the 'Times' correspondent, in his progress by dawk from Benares to Allahabad. See also 3166.
3124. February 1858. Letter from Captain H Yule, Deputy Secretary, Public Works Department, Calcutta. Submits an explanation of his message about Colonel Baird Smith's request for aid, and asks for orders to put Captain Turnbull and Lieutenant Whish at his service. The Chief Engineer North West Provinces has asked for aid, and been referred to the Commander-in-Chief for the services of Captain Farrington and Captain C H Stuart. Major Goodwyn has been directed to accompany Mr M Rendell, sent out by the Railway Company to accelerate the opening of the line to Rajmahal. 3125. February 1858. Letter from Captain H Yule, Officiating Secretary, Public Works Department, Calcutta. Reports that there will be no difficulty about housing two regiments at Roorkee in anything but wood owing to the Bijnore forests being still closed by the rebels. If the Governor General wishes an additional regiment provided for at Roorkee, may Colonel Fraser be instructed accordingly. See also 3124.
3126. February 1858. Letter from Captain H Howe, Officiating Superintendent of Marine, Calcutta. Asks for the return of a testimonial; the gun case was never sent to Captain Bird of the 'Lady Jocelyn'. 2 letters. Copy of reply, from Allahabad, 6 Feb that as soon as the records of the Private Secretary's office coming by bullock train arrive, the testimonial will be returned. Copy of later reply, 11 Feb, returning testimonials. See also 2532, 2586.
3127. February 1858. Letter from Mr M Gubbins, Civil Service, late Financial Commissioner, Oudh, Calcutta. Forwards a copy of a remonstrance addressed by him to the Secretary to the Chief Commissioner, Oudh, against the omission of his name in Brigadier Inglis' despatch. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3128. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner of the Cis Sutlej States, Umballa. Forwards introductory letters (no longer enclosed) and a copy of a despatch showing his services at Delhi; asks for a higher appointment. Copy of reply, the Governor General is well aware of good service rendered by Barnes, and of his claim for consideration.
3129. January to February 1858. Letter from Major A P Phayre, Commissioner of Pegu, Rangoon. States that the arrival of the 'Roebuck' and the expected arrival of more gun boats will prove to the Burmese across the frontier that their movements are being watched. The 'Tubal Cain' carries 35 or 36 elephants.
3130. February 1858. Copy of reply to Captain C R Wriford, 1st Europeans, Delhi. His letter has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3130a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr C H Lushington. To authorise payment of an Under Secretary's salary to Mr L Bowring, Civil Service.
3131. February 1858. Letter from the Reverend M D C Walters, Secretary to the Wilson Memorial, Calcutta. Forwards an appeal for a Memorial Fund for the late Bishop Wilson. Copy of reply, returning some papers about this. See also 3446.
3132. January to February 1858. Letter from Captain W R Shakespear, Officiating 1st Assistant to the Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Goolgunge. Asks to be confirmed in his appointment. See also 3544.
3133. February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant W Osborne, Political Agent with the Rajah of Rewah. Reports the state of affairs at Rewah. His spies report that Deer Sing, the sirdar who led the attack on Osborne at Rewah has been sent on a mission to Nana Sahib; the Rajah is said to have been offered the Allahabad district if he attacked Allahabad on the south. The Rajah is a weak fool. They say the British Raj is at an end, and that the British have no troops. Osborne is obliged to keep the Rajah near him, which is proving difficult as his bad advisers have tried hard to get him to Bandsgurh, which has hitherto been the sign that the Rewah Rajahs are undertaking a serious war. He does not think now that Rewah will openly rebel, but he will not be able to demand the prisoners taken at Myhere till troops are moving through the territory. He proposes to level the Fort to the ground as soon as it is taken. Private. Letter about a letter from the Governor General to Lieutenant Osborne.
3135. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr F M Bird, Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector of Goruckpore. Having heard that Oudh is to be incorporated with the North West Provinces, asks to be given charge of a district, especially Bahraitch. Copy of reply, his wishes are noted. See also 4331.
3139. February 1858. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Civil Service, Goruckpore. Reports on the proceedings of the Oudh rebels, the expected movements of the Gurkhas, and the attempts of Man Sing to make terms for himself (addressed to Colonel Strachey).
3141. December 1857 to February 1858. Letter from Mr P H Egerton, Magistrate and Collector of Delhi. Reports on the condition of Delhi. Whilst the Mehwattees and the Jats behaved well, the Goojurs made themselves obnoxious even to the rebels. He suggests turning the Jumma Musjid into a church for the Delhi garrison in retaliation for the desecration of the churchyard; though it would be absurd to destroy the native city, some such signal mark of retaliation is needed (to Mr Beadon).
3142. February 1858. Letter from Major W C Erskine, Commissioner and Agent to the Lieutenant Governor Saugor and Nerbudda Territories, Jubbulpore. Reports the dawk line clear of rebels. The Fort of Raatgurh was to have been taken by assault by General Rose, but the enemy, including the Shahzadah of Mundeesore and others, fled in the night. The 4th Cavalry are ordered to Allahabad and the 6th to Benares. With them 13 elephants will be despatched (to Colonel Strachey).
3143. February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant W W H Greathed, Deputy Consulting Railway Engineer to Government North West Provinces, Allahabad. Encloses a letter from Mr Taylor (?) and re-applies to be allowed to take part in the siege of Lucknow. Copy of reply, he may go to Lucknow provided his Railway work is effectively provided for in his absence. See also 3116.
3144. January to February 1858. Letter from Captain T Rattray, Commandant, Military Police Corps Rajmahal Hills, Camp, Arrah. Submits an English translation of an Urdu paper about the Mutiny, drawn up by a subadar under his command. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. Will Rattray ask the subadar on what date he heard of symptoms of mutiny at Barrackpore; and whether he has any reason to suppose that after the King of Oudh reached Calcutta, communications were kept up by his officers and ministers with the mutinously disposed regiments. 3146. January 1858. Letter from the Right Reverend Dr Persico, Catholic Bishop of Agra, Calcutta. Asks for an interview. Copy of reply, refused, please state business in writing. See also 3194.
3146a. January 1858. Copy of a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Bombay Presidency, Poona. Acknowledgment of a letter.
3147. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr F N Maltby, Financial Commissioner, Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Amla. Submits a memorial (no longer enclosed) and asks for the removal of the very severe censure of Government passed upon him for urging a reference to Government when his views differed with those of the Resident in regard to their relative positions. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. Miscellaneous Bundle number 380b.
3148. February to March 1858. Letter from Lieutenant W N Lees Ll D, Secretary of the Board of Examiners, Calcutta. About his salary as Stipendiary Member of the Board. (Printed memorial). 4 other letters about this and note by Private Secretary. See also 3230, 3329, 3335.
3149. February 1858. Letter from Mr N A Chick, Assistant to the Secretary to Government Central Provinces, Allahabad. States that the abolition of the Government of the Central Provinces and the re-establishment of that of the North West has abruptly deprived him of his present appointment; asks for an appointment in the reconstructed Allahabad Government and in the meantime to be rated a supernumerary or allowed privilege leave. Copy of the 'Phoenix' for 14 Dec 1857. Memorandum about Chick's papers by Private Secretary. 2 notes about Chick. Copy of reply, allowing him a month's leave with pay.
