Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3151 to 3200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 32 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3151 to 3200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary [Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, followed by Lewin Bentham Bowring from 1 April 1858] and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3151, 3158, 3167, 3172, 3177, 3179, 3180, 3181, 3183, 3186, 3188a, and 3194 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3151. December 1857 to February 1858. Letter from Mr J D Vaughan, Master Attendant, Singapore. Submits printed notes on the Malays of Pinang and Province Wellesley, in the hope that they will show that a regiment or two of such men would be invaluable; states his services, and if Government raises a body of Malays for police purposes, offers his services. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3152. January to February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant T E Kennion, 8th Battalion of Foot Artillery, Bombay. Repeats his request for a pension for the wound he received at Delhi. Copy of reply, sending reply to earlier letter. See also 3026.
3153. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Major C V Bowie, Barrackpore. Sending him a letter about the Park at Barrackpore.
3154. January to February 1858. Letter from Dr W Peskett M D in joint charge of Simla. States that the Commander-in-Chief has appointed an officer to the post held by him for the last 21 months, which he hoped to retain. Asks if he may still hope to be appointed Superintendent of Vaccination in the Hills. 4 other papers about the post of Superintendent of Vaccination. Copy of letter to Mr Edmonstone, that Peskett is to be appointed; also note to this effect. Telegraph Message received number 591. Telegraph Message sent number 314. See also 3234a, 3327. 3156. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr R Alreu, late Head Assistant of Forests Office, Pegu, Moulmein. Has forwarded by the 'Cape of Good Hope' a copy of his journal of a tour through the Pegu and Martaban Provinces. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3157. January to February 1858. Letter from Major H Hopkinson, Commissioner of Moulmein. Has returned to Moulmein where all is well; he regrets that Major Fytche has not consented to retain control of Martaban and to carry out his Zoonzaling expedition; but he does not seem to be well. See also 2948.
3158. January to February 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Camp, Bhilsa. Requires 2 assistants, for Dhar and Amjheera and proposes Captain H L Evans and Mr Helbert. Brigadier Wheler has not yet reached Saugor. The Force is not 2000 strong. Copy of reply, orders have been made out for Lieutenant Helbert. The turquoise has arrived safely for Mrs Talbot. Sir Colin is soon expected to have Lucknow, he has an enormous siege train. 3162a. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Colonel H M Durand, Calcutta. Sending him a letter. The Governor General's party arrived safely at Allahabad, but without office or baggage they are living in a very revolutionary style. People go about with revolvers, and as there is a rabble of the enemy within sight they may get some practice.
3163. February 1858. Copy of reply to Lieutenant A F Corbett. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary. Copy of letter to Colonel Stuart, Military Secretary, Camp, Allahabad sending him a letter from Wharncliffe and an application from the officer on whose behalf he wrote. See also 3164.
3166. February 1858. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Deputy Post Master General, Fort William. In reply, regrets that he was not able to be of service to Mr Russell as he had left before Dove returned to Calcutta. Note by Canning for earlier letter to Dove asking him to give assistance and information to Russell, the 'Times' correspondent. See also 3123.

3167. February 1858. Letter from Mr W Muir, Secretary to Government North West Provinces, Allahabad. Submits an extract of a letter from Mr Mayne about the proposed movement from Soram and the permanent occupation of the post.
3167a. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant W Osborne, Rewah. Sending him a copy of a letter sent to him by Governor General on 22 Sep 1857. Also letter to Dr Dixon, Superintending Surgeon, Allahabad, asking him to forward letters for Lieutenant Osborne by the medical officer he is sending.
3168. February 1858. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Forwards plans of the retreat and advance at Lucknow. (No longer enclosed).
3169. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Captain R M J Annesley, Kherwarrah. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3170. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr E G Chapman, merchant, Darjeeling. Offers to let General Lloyd's house to Lady Canning. Copy of reply, Lady Canning has no intention of visiting Darjeeling.
3171. 1858. Letter from Mr R V Cockerell, Assistant Magistrate and Collector, Burdwan. Asks for Private Secretary's aid in obtaining a post.
3172. December 1857 to January 1858. Letter from Colonel H M Durand, Officiating Agent Central India, Camp, 12 miles north of Indore. He is marching to Indore to disarm Holkar's culprit Horse. The Bombay Government made a mistake in sending Colonel Steuart's column to Hoshungabad. He dreads returning to the Residency.
3173. January 1858. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Calcutta. Submits the Durbar accounts for Nov and Dec 1857 (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply returning the countersigned accounts.
3174. February 1858. Letter from Major A G Goodwyn, Consulting Engineer, Railway Department, Benares. Asks for orders about a proposed inspection of the line with Mr Rendell, who has been sent out by the Railway Commission for the more speedy opening of the Ganges line.
3175. January to February 1858. Letter from G P Grey, Camp, on Raneegunge. Asks for letters to be forwarded to Cawnpore.
3176. January to February 1858. Letter from Captain W H Haswell,' Himalaya', Calcutta. States that Captain Piers of the 'Himalaya' has agreed to take the boxes as far as Plymouth. Haswell goes by the 'Ava' on 9 February.
3177. January to February 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to Governor General Central Provinces, Indore. Reports the arrival of Sir H Rose at Indore. Matters are settling down at Indore, and opium is coming on. Carriage for troops has caused a temporary, but entire cessation of export and import.
3178. January 1858. Letter from the Reverend H Hutton, Chaplain, Mission Church, Calcutta. Applies for the use of the Barrackpore Park bungalow during the repairs of his house. Copy of reply, Private Secretary believes Lady Canning is to go to Barrackpore, he should apply later.
3179. January to February 1858. Letter from Captain W E Hay, Assistant Commissioner of Kangra, Nuggur in Kullu. Asks to be paid his expenses in connection with the Himalayan pheasants sent in 1857. He has intercepted a correspondence from a pretender to the Kullu Raj and the pretender and his accomplice have been executed. Copy of reply, sending a cheque to Hay. Also acknowledgment by Hay. See also 1619.
3180. January 1858. Letter from Mr H B Harington, Judge of the Sudder Dewany and Nizamut Adawlut, North West Provinces, Calcutta. Submits a letter from Mr Muir about the proposed transfer of part of the Meerut Division from the North West Government to the Punjab; Sir John Lawrence believes the transfer inexpedient. He will send Muir's memorandum if necessary. Copy of reply, acknowledgment, please send the memorandum. Also 2 letters of 18 Jan to Harington, that ladies are still prohibited going up country above Patna and Chupra.
3181. January 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Calcutta. Submits a letter from a trustworthy native (no longer enclosed).
3182. February 1858. Letter from Colonel Lord M Kerr, Commanding Camp, Allahabad. Has had no answer to a letter to the Adjutant General, Calcutta, about bad boots from the Government stores, Calcutta, for his regiment.
3182a. February 1858. Copy of a letter to W H Russell Esquire. That Lieutenant P Stewart will assist him on his journey. Also copy of letter to Stewart, asking him (privately) to assist Russell with telegraphs, giving him precedence over all but Government or official messages.
3183. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr W Martin, builder and home agent, Darjeeling. Submits his opinion on the minimum amount of assistance that would be required by European settlers going to the Himalayas.
3184. January 1858. Letter from Mr J M Melany, Secretary to the Regatta, Calcutta. Asks for the support of the Government House. Copy of reply sending 100 Rupees.
3185. January 1858. Letter from Mr W Moore, Howrah. Asks for money and a post.
3186. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr J Power, Magistrate of Futtehghur. Submits an explanation for an objectionable expression used by him with regard to certain European women in his letter to the Secretary to the Relief Fund, and states that he had no idea of passing a sentence of death on these women without the sanction of a superior authority. Draft of earlier letter, also copy; 3 women members of the families of English officers had been found to have been living with the Nawab of Furrackabad, and Power proposed to hang them with the consent of the Commander-in-Chief. Power is warned against speaking or writing in such a way. Copy of reply to Power. Telegraph Message received number 581; Telegraph Message sent number 293.

3188. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr Charles Raikes, Civil Service, Futtyghur, with the Commander-in-Chief. Applies to be Governor General's Agent with the Commander-in-Chief. Copy of reply, refused, there has never been such a post.

3190. February 1858. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Asks for the return of a dispositions map.
3191. February 1858. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Calcutta. Asks for permission to forward a copy of Lieutenant Colonel Shortrede's letter to Colonel Waugh, so that Waugh may refute certain misrepresentations therein. Copy of reply from Private Secretary, refused, letter was private. See also 2965, 3367.
3192. February 1858. Letter from Mr St George Tucker, Collector of Mirzapore. Reports that Captain Osborne has re-opened the Deccan road and stationed post horses at the Chowkies.
3193. January 1858. Letter from Mrs C Wells, Calcutta. Asks for money.
3194. January 1858. Letter from the Right Reverend Dr Persico, Catholic Bishop of Agra, Calcutta. Asks if his official letters of Nov and Dec 1857 about the position of himself and clergy during the late disturbances have been submitted to the Governor General in Council. Copy of reply, please apply to Home Department. See also 3146.
3196. February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant F K Hawkins, late of the 44th Native Infantry, and now with the 4th Punjab Rifles, Camp, near Cawnpore. Asks for employment in Oudh. See also 3198.
3198. February 1858. Letter from Ensign F K Hawkins. Encloses copy of his application for employment in Oudh (to Mr Edmonstone). Copy of reply, application noted. See also 3196.
3199. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Captain W D Bishop, late 30th Native Infantry, Cawnpore. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary. Endorsed: see N W R Book 59.
3200. January to February 1858. Letter from the Honourable Walter Elliot, Madras. Asks for a Brigade Majorship for Captain Fagan. (No longer enclosed). Copy of reply to Elliot, his letter has been transferred to the Military Secretary. Written from Camp, Allahabad, where the Governor General has moved, partly to be near the Commander-in-Chief; the Governor General is administering the North West Provinces in person, a very onerous duty. Copy of letter to Colonel Charles Stuart, sending him Elliot's letter.
