Memorandum by Colonel Edwardes on the Fall of Herat, Nov 1856, suggesting the formation of a Light Brigade under Brigadier Chamberlain for service in Kandahar, where Sirdar Gholam Hyder Khan is not likely to be able to hold out against any Persian advance instigated by Russia. Also Sir John Lawrence's reply, objecting to this scheme. Also Edwardes' subsequent letter informing Lawrence that the Amir had no fears for Herat. In envelope. 96. Newscutting from the 'Delhi Gazette', 18 Dec 1856, urging that Herat can never be retaken from the side of Bushire, and that an army will have to be sent from Peshawur; begs that General Wyndham be not appointed, but that Brigadier Sydney Cotton be given the command. In envelope.
