Derivation of the word chappatee, the unleavened bread eaten by the natives of the North West Provinces, 4 Jan 1858. C. Memorandum on the lotus flower as a symbol. All three are marked 'Copy taken for Lord Palmerston'.

207. Letter from Lieutenant T E Bell, Assistant to the Governor General's Agent, Nagpore, to General Sir J Low, 25 Aug 1857. Submits the grounds under which he charges Mr Plowden, Commissioner of Nagpore, with being incompetent and dangerous, and recommends his summary removal. In envelope.
208. Four memoranda for the guidance of the Private Secretary's office. Two lists of the Secretaries to Government, with notes on the subjects with which the Secretaries deal. Note on the appointments filled by the Governor General and note on the practice in dealing with public official papers, and in dealing with the English despatches. Also memorandum on the times at which the Governor General sees the Secretaries. In envelope.
209. Memorandum on the navigation of the Godavery by Lieutenant Haig, 23 Feb 1856. Plan of section of the Godavery. Estimate of the expense of conveying 2,700 tons of produce a year down part of the Godavery. In envelope.
210. Four memoranda about the force for the Persian Gulf 1. Force to be sent, 4 Aug 1856. 2. Statement showing the distribution of the troops among the transports and steamers. Oct 1856. 3. Extract from a Despatch from the Government of Bombay to the Court, 17 Nov 1856, reporting the despatch of the force for Persia. 4. Memorandum of approximate number of 2nd Bombay Division for Persia.
211. Opinions of Members of Council on the removal of Mr Colvin from his post at Agra, Jul 1857. 2 double pages. Lord Canning writes a note for circulation explaining why Brigadier Polwhele has been removed. Mr Dorin suggests that Colvin be removed as well. General Low suggests a meeting of the Council to consider whether or not formally to displace Mr Colvin from the office of Lieutenant Governor. 2 further Minutes suggesting that Havelock's movements after relieving Lucknow be decided upon, 27 Jul. When found in 1961, these papers were sealed into an envelope initialled by Mr Talbot and Mr Bowring: this envelope was in turn sealed in another envelope labelled: 'Opinions of Members of Council regarding [words erased] a successor to the Honourable Mr Colvin.'

Copy of a letter from Canning to Colvin, asking him to question the man, and find out the chief plotters in the King's suite, and the part of the country to which the emissary has been directed, 28 Feb. 4. Letter from E J Colvin to Canning, giving information about the King of Oudh's intrigues, 1 Mar. 5. Further letter from Colvin to Canning, on the same, 1 Mar. 6. Copy of letter from Canning to Colvin, thanking him for the information, with comments. In envelope.
