226. Papers connected with the grant of a subsidy to Dost Mahomed Khan for the defence of Herat. Copy of telegram from the Chief Commissioner Punjab, 21 Nov 1856, announcing the fall of Herat on 25 Oct and asking what he should say to the Amir about aid. Copy of telegram from the Chief Commissioner Punjab, 25 Nov 1856, stating that the meeting with the Dost is to be at the beginning of Dec and the Dost hopes he will be met by the Governor General, or the Chief Commissioner with plenary powers. Notes by the Council (Canning, Dorin, Low, Grant, Peacock) on aid for the Amir, 23 Nov 1856 Notes taken by Canning at the meeting of the Council, 26 Nov 1856.
227. Papers from Mr Murray, Baghdad, 1856. Letter from Murray to Lord Elphinstone, 15 Sep 1856, urging war against Persia, and suggesting steps to be taken. Enclosures: 1. Memorandum of ports, harbours, towns in Southern Persia, by Major Taylor. 2. Table of routes in the South of Persia, including names of local tribes and tribal leaders. 3. Map of Southern Persia, by Major Robert Lewis Taylor. Notes on the plan of campaign.
228. Memorandum by Cecil Beadon on Captain Button's proposal about the silk worms in the Himalaya, 30 Dec 1857.
229. Letter from Mr Cecil Beadon, Feb 1858. Sends 2 notes from the Peninsular and Oriental Company's Agent about ‘native’ passengers travelling by steamer; the only one who has reached Calcutta from Southampton appears to be Fazeb Khan, 16 Feb. Also a copy of a telegraphic message from Mr Anderson, Bombay, 20 Feb, to Mr Beadon, giving the names of ‘natives’ travelling by the steamers of the P&O Company. Partly in code, with decoded words written above. In envelope.
