245. Official letter from Mr G F Edmonstone to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, conveying the decision of the Government on the punishment of mutineers in Oudh. The Governor General does not think it advisable to destroy cities, or to confiscate mosques and temples. 28 Jan 1858.

247. Letter from Mr J C Wilson, Commissioner, on Special Duty, Camp, Meerut, to C B Thornhill, sending a translation of a proclamation just published by Khan Bahadoor Khan at Bareilly. Note forwarding this to Mr Muir, 10 Feb 1858.
248. Letters relating to the Siege of Lucknow, Jun-Sep 1857. 1. 6 Jun 1857. Letter from Sir Henry Lawrence to General Wheeler describing the course of events. Suggests a simple cipher. Partly in French. Also annexed, another copy of this letter. 2. 3 copies of a letter from Sir Henry Lawrence to the Chief Civil or Military Officer, Allahabad, 24 Jun, saying how anxious Lawrence is for news. Urges the importance of relieving Cawnpore. The letters have different postcripts. Also fragment of a letter written by Sir Henry. 3. Letter from Martin Gubbins to the Chief Civil or Military Authority, Allahabad, urging the immediate relief of Cawnpore. General Wheeler has applied to Lucknow for aid but has been refused. 4. Letter from Sir H Lawrence to General Havelock, 28 Jun enclosing a letter (see 5 below) for the Governor General. Hopes there will be no delay in relieving Wheeler. 5. Letter from Sir H Lawrence to Lord Canning, 28 Jun, describing events at Lucknow, and in the surrounding places. 6. 3 copies of instructions from Lawrence to the officer commanding any detachment proceeding from Allahabad to Cawnpore, 28 Jun reporting that the Cawnpore Force has been cut off by treachery. The officer is not therefore to advance, but to stand fast or fall back. Asks for news. 7. Letter from Sir Henry Lawrence to General Havelock, 28 Jun 10pm. reporting the destruction of the Cawnpore Force by treachery. Havelock should now alter his plans, and not move with less than 1,000 Europeans. Hopes to be able to hold out for a month, but urges Havelock not to delay. Gives instructions as to line of advance, disposition of the 3 Gurkha regiments. 8. Letter from Sir Henry Lawrence to General Havelock, 30 Jun reporting his defeat by the enemy, chiefly owing to the misconduct of the Native Artillery. The position is now very serious. Must be relieved in 15 or 20 days. 9. Letter from Major Renaud, Commanding Detachment, Cawnpore Column, to General Havelock, 2 Jul reporting the massacre by the boats at Cawnpore. Asks for instructions. 10. Note from Major MacLeod, Agra, to E A Reade, 14 Jul, asks for information about reinforcements and urges the necessity of all troops coming up being abundantly supplied with percussion caps. 11. Letter, possibly from Inglis to Havelock, describing the deteriorating condition of the besieged. 1 Sep. In 2 envelopes. Handed to Colonel Birch by Colonel Tytler, and by Birch to the Private Secretary
