‘No. 33 Private Secretary’s Correspondence’, Nos. 3201a to 3250

Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3201a to 3250, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 33 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3201 to 3300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3209, 3212, 3213, 3214, 3216, 3222, 3224a, 3225, 3229, 3230, 3232, 3233, 3234, 3239, and 3250 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3201a. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Beadon, Calcutta. Sending a copy of a letter from Mr Merrall to Lord Harris, also two messages from him and one to him about a boat of light draught.
3202. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Captain H Hoseason, Aurungabad. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary. Original letter from Captain H. Hoseason is in Military Secretary's Correspondence. See Mss Eur F699/1/3/2/70, item 3487. See also 3261.
3204. February 1858. Letter from Major E Lawford, Madras Engineers, Madras. Asks to be appointed to officiate for Colonel Green, Chief Engineer of Mysore. Note about this.
3205. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Dr T Murray MD, late Gwalior Contingent, Neemuch. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3206. January to February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant T Pierce, Instructor and Quarter Master late 30th Native Infantry, Bewar, Rajpootana. Asks for civil employment. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 374, 1948.
3207. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Beadon, Calcutta. Sending him a letter from Mr Schlagentweit.
3208. January to February 1858. Letter from Mr W Twemlow, Collector of Customs, Moulmein. Asks for his salary to be revised. Copy of letter to Mr Ricketts, Civil Service, Calcutta, sending him a letter from Mr Twemlow about his allowances.
3209. February 1858. Letter from Mr W Tayler, Patna. Sends a copy of his last letter to the Private Secretary about the decision passed on his case. See also 3122.

3212. September 1857 to February 1858. Letter from H Remfry Esquire, Attorney at Law, from Truro. Recommends a remedy for cholera. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3213. February 1858. Letter from W Tayler Esquire, late Commissioner of Patna. Has seen printed publicly a letter of the Supreme Government about his case; if his explanation about Major Eyre was satisfactory asks for his letter sent through Mr Edmonstone, to be published. He has already sent to the editors of different papers a copy of his letter to Mr Bax, which he hopes will be considered justified. The charge now shown to be unfounded has spread throughout India and probably to England. Copy of reply about this.
3214. January to February 1858. Letter from Captain T Hungerford, Commanding 2/6 and Bengal Light Field Battery, Mhow. Is obliged to leave India under medical certificate; submits copy of a letter addressed to him by Parsee and Hindu merchants of Mhow in gratitude for the way in which he suppressed the mutiny at the station on the night of 1 July asks for a reward. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3215. January to February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant A Cory, Adjutant 3rd Irregular Cavalry, Camp, near Fyzabad. Encloses two introductory letters (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgment. Governor General's Book number 751a.
3216. February 1858. Anonymous letter from a foreigner, Calcutta. Suggesting the issue of a proclamation offering free pardon to rebels who became Christians.

3217. June 1857 to February 1858. Letter from Mr W Balmain, Civil Service. Has just arrived from England and asks where he should go.
3218. February 1858. Letter from Captain H L Evans, 17th Bombay Native Infantry, Deputy Commissioner, Poorwah in Oudh, Camp, Dunnee. Asks to be given charge of Dhar, and will join the new appointment on the fall of Lucknow. Copy of reply, Governor General has no intention of making such an appointment at present. See also 3158.
3221. February 1858. Letter from Brigadier Colin Mackenzie. Returns thanks for the office of Agent at Moorshedabad. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also 3296.
3222. February 1858. Letter from H C Hamilton Esquire, Ghazeepore. Encloses a letter from Mr Osborne, Bustee, on the subject of Mann Sing's protection of some 40 Christians and suggests measures for their liberation. Copy of reply, the Christians are not with Mann Singh, but in Lucknow. Copy of letter to Osborne, asking him for more details about the people allegedly saved by Mann Sing. Urgent. 3223. January to February 1858. Letter from Brigadier J B Hearsey, Commanding the Barrackpore Division. There will be no difficulty in providing Lady Canning with a European guard when she visits Barrackpore.
3224. February 1858. Letter from Mr G Campbell, Civil Service, Allahabad. Asks for permission to go to Cawnpore to meet Mrs Campbell. Copy of reply, permission granted.
3224a. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Albert Wood Esquire, Lancaster Herald and Gentleman Usher of the Order of the Bath. In acknowledgment of his letter of 31 Dec 1857 and the accompanying packet with the insignia of a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Bath for Sir J Lawrence. Governor General's Book numbers 852, 856; Miscellaneous Bundle number 206.
3225. February 1858. Letter from the Honourable J A Dorin, Calcutta. Acknowledges a letter with enclosure about ammunition for the Gurkhas. The 'Candia' has brought little news, nothing definite is known about the scheme for the future Government of India. He regrets that the Nana should have made to the westward owing to his influence with the Maharatta. Colonel Inglis is to be made Major General, and the 'Leviathan' is nearly afloat. Copy of earlier letter sending a message from Brigadier General Macgregor, about a lack of ammunition.
3226. January 1858. Letter from Mr R F Stack. Explains that Mr J D Bell, applicant for the post of Standing Counsel to the East India Company has been detained in England.
3227. February 1858. Letter from the Post Master of Benares. Explains about the misdirection of two parcels. Copy of earlier letter asking for explanation. See also 3260.
3228. February to March 1858. Letter from J C Imbert, Military Department, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to his request for money and the return of his enclosure. 1 anna stamp. Also later letter, with 1 anna stamp. 6 papers. Copy of reply, sending him 100 Rupees. See also 3315
3229. February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Drummond, Calcutta. Reports the arrival of the Engineer from England sent about the Kumaon iron works, and asks to superintend any extension to the works. Copy of letter from Captain Ramsay to Drummond about the iron works. See also 4058, 4062; Miscellaneous Bundle number 380c.
3229a. c. November 1856 to March 1858. Memorandum that number 3229a has been transferred to Miscellaneous Bundle number 380c.
3230. February to March 1858. Letter from Mr Beadon, Calcutta. Sends papers about Lieutenant Lees' case. Copies of 4 papers about Lieutenant Lees, 1855 - 1856. Copy of reply, returning the papers; the Governor General wishes to express his own opinion on the matter if Lees addresses the Government of India. See also 3148, 3329, 3335.
3231. January to February 1858. Letter from Captain J E Fraser, 4th Native Infantry, Noorpoor. Wishes to know why he was removed from the Punjab Commission; submits details of his career, and asks for employment. Various endorsements, showing that he was removed from his post for frequent absence from his duties under pretence of sickness. Copy of reply, the Governor General declines to give him new employment. Governor General's Book number 54.
3232. June 1857 to February 1858. Letter from Captain R G Mayne, Acting Commandant, 3rd Irregular Cavalry, Saugor. Submits a letter in Persian from the native officer in charge of the recruiting party at Agra, who have been robbed by the Bundalas and the Thakoor of Talbeth, and suggests restitution for their losses. The recruiting party is now at Jhansi, and he has sent 150 Rupees for their assistance with orders to proceed to Agra, or, if impossible, to return. The Rajah of Tehree might be asked to assist them. The Europeans in Jhansi have been reported killed by the troops, and the Gwalior Contingent sepoys have been slaughtered by the Banelpore Rajah whom they had joined.
3233. February 1858. Letter from W Muir Esquire. Submits a letter from Mr John Thornton, formerly Secretary to Government North West Provinces, as to how far religious prejudices have tended to excite the Mutiny.
3234. November 1856. Letter from Colonel Durand, Calcutta. Suggests that the Governor General calls for a copy of the proceedings of the Joint Committee (1849-1852) appointed by the English, Russian, Turkish and Persian Governments, as far as they contain information useful in military operations. Also for the best maps of Persia, the one just struck off being very defective.
3234a. February 1858. Letter from Dr B C Ross, Assistant Surgeon, in joint medical charge, Simla. Further to his application for the office now held by Dr Peskett at Simla. Testimonials. See also 3154, 3327.
3235. February 1858. Letter from Mr H B Riddell, Director General of the Post Office in India, Calcutta. Explains the irregularity in the transmission of letters from the Governor General's Camp through the several district offices His Lordship passed en route.
3236. February 1858. Letter from Captain H Raban, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore. Forwards a document sent to him by mistake.
3237. February 1858. Copy of reply to Lieutenant J W Sinclair. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary. See Mss Eur F699/1/3/2/68 item 3375.
3237a. February to March 1858. Letter from Dr W J Palmer, Civil Assistant Surgeon, Ghazeepore. Asks to be allowed to bring his wife to Ghazeepore. Copies of two replies, the prohibition is withdrawn. See also 3395, 3432.
3238. February 1858. Letter from Buddoo Nath Ghose and Kristo Chunder Chose, Calcutta. Asks for a reply to their petition to the Governor General about their Zemindaree. Copy of reply, it has been transferred to the Bengal Government. See also 2105.
3238a. February 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Beadon. Sending him a letter.
3239. February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel A C Spottiswoode, 37th Native Infantry, Benares. Asks for information about his nephew, Mr Arthur Jenkins, Civil Service, who was stationed at Poorwah, Oudh. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, he went to Cawnpore just before the outbreak and it is feared that he was killed there.
3240. February 1858. Letter from Mr T E B Judge, Attorney at Law, Calcutta. Sends a letter from his father thanking Private Secretary for his assistance to his son Lieutenant C Judge of the Engineers. See also 2654, 2655.
3241. February 1858. Letter from Mr E M Potters, Camp Alum Bagh, with the Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh. Asks for reply to his memorial asking for the refund of the amount he has been plundered by soldiers on his way to Dilkhoosha after leaving the Lucknow garrison. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, memorial has not been received.
3242. February 1858. Letter from Mr E C Bayley, Under Secretary to Government, North West Provinces, Allahabad. Forwards two letters from Pundit Ajoodhia Persad late Tehsildar in the Fyzabad District, about the state of affairs in Oudh. (Letters no longer enclosed).
3243. February 1858. Letter from C Beadon Esquire. States that explanation has been called for from the General Post Office for the mis-sending of the heavy despatches by 'Candia' to Allahabad. Mr Garrett is much to blame. Copy of earlier letter to Beadon, the Governor General is much displeased with the Post Office for its frequent mistakes. See also 3231.
3245. February 1858. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Allahabad. Forwards a copy of a letter from the Officiating Secretary to Government, North West Provinces, that the services of Lieutenant John Ritchie, Assistant Superintendent of Neemuch during the Mutiny, be taken into consideration. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3246. February 1858. Letter from Mr W Glynn, Deputy Magistrate, Futtehpore, Allahabad. Submits papers and certificates (no longer enclosed) and asks to be made an Assistant Commissioner in Oudh; and asks for an audience. Two notes about this. Copy of reply, application noted. See also 3614.
3247. January 1858. Letter from Mr J Power, Magistrate of Futtehghur. Asks for assistants at Futtehguhr, and suggests Captain Bradford, Mr Capper and Mirza Abbas Beg; encloses statement of Mr Capper's services, and copies of Mirza Abbas Beg's testimonials.
3248. February 1858. Letter from H B Riddell Esquire, Director General of Post Offices, Calcutta. About mistakes made by the Post Office. Copy of earlier letter, about a misdirected letter to Lady Canning from Lord Canning.
3249. January 1858. Letter from Miss C F Scott, Calcutta. Asks for news of Mademoiselle Niemeier. Copy of reply, Mrs Talbot has no news of her, is aware that a long interval has elapsed, but would be grateful if Miss Scott would wait the arrival of the next steamer from China before filling up her post. See also 1940, 2047, 2048.
3250. January 1858. Letter from F Gubbins Esquire, Officiating Commissioner, Cawnpore. In answer to the query regarding the violation of English women and girls at Cawnpore, states that no violation happened there, and that Lieutenant Thompson, one of the four who escaped from Cawnpore supports this view, and totally disbelieves the story of the young lady who is said to have cut off the head of the sowar who had taken her to his house.
