Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3351 to 3400, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 34 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3301 to 3400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Gerald Chetwynd Talbot, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3354, 3356, 3361, 3363, 3364, 3365, 3366, 3372, 3373, 3374, 3380, 3386, 3389, 3390, 3391, and 3394 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3351. March 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Beadon, Calcutta. Asking him what, if anything, was said to Captain Man, who brought charges of misapplication of patronage against the Governor of the Straits. See also 3275.
3351a. March 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Edmonstone, Allahabad. Asks him to give facilities to Mr G Campbell to examine papers in the Foreign Department bearing on the administration of Oudh.
3352. March 1858. Letter from Mr T D Forsyth, Civil Service, Allahabad. In the event of his not being likely to get a District soon in the North West Provinces, asks to be made 1st class Deputy Commissioner of Lucknow. Copy of reply, there are many applications for this post.
3353. March 1858. Letter from Dr John Campbell, surgeon, late 7th Light Cavalry, Calcutta. Asks for the grant of medical staff salary or a similar indulgence to that sanctioned to other officers of the late Lucknow garrison by G O P C Number 347 of 26 Feb (cover only). Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3354. March 1858. Letter from Mr B Gower, Locomotive Superintendent, Allahabad. Asks for an emblazoned sketch of the Governor General's armorial bearings as the Railway authorities wish to testify their loyalty to the Governor General on the occasion of the opening of the line to Futtehpore; the engine starting on that occasion will be named after the Governor General. Copy of reply about this.
3355. March 1858. Letter from Mr J W Sherer, Magistrate and Collector of Cawnpore. Returns Mr Bell's letter to Mr Talbot asking for particulars about Captain and Mrs Skene. Copy of earlier letter asking for this letter. See also 2960, 3273, 3322, 3339, 3347, 3417, 3500.
3356. March 1858. Letter from Mr F W Flace, Editor of the 'Delhi Gazette', Agra. Asks to be supplied with news by the Government and asks where the seat of the future Government of the North West Provinces is to be, so that he may restart his business. Copy of reply, he will be supplied with news. Although for the present, certain public offices must be retained at Agra, Allahabad will be in future the seat of the Government of the North West Provinces. See also 2539, 2699, 2831, 3391.
3357. March 1858. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, Civil Auditor, Fort William. Asks for a Government order for Mr L Bowring's pay from 24 October 1857 to 29 Jan 1858 at 1250 Rupees per month. Memorandum about this.
3358. March 1858. Letter from Dr S Delpratt, civil surgeon, Hazaribagh, Calcutta. Asks for permission for his wife to return with him to Hazaribagh. 2 letters, from Private Secretary to Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, and from Financial Secretary to President of the Council, refusing permission. Copy of reply, 15 March the prohibition has been withdrawn.
3359. March 1858. Letter from Mrs B Allen, Alipore. Asks permission to return to Gaya. Copy of reply: prohibition withdrawn. Copy of letter to Mr Edmonstone, asking him to issue a notification that the prohibition is withdrawn. See also 3101
3359a. March 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Edmonstone, Allahabad. Asking him to announce in the Gazette that ladies are permitted to proceed to Hazaribagh.
3360. March 1858. Letter from Dr H W Graham, Assistant Surgeon, 8th Bengal Infantry, Nowshera. Repeats his application for the charge of the civil station of Murree. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, the appointment has been referred to Sir J Lawrence. See also 2652, 3090, 3375
3361. March 1858. Letter from Mr F N Maltby, Judicial Commissioner of the Hyderabad Assigned Districts, Akote, North Berar. Has applied for sick leave, and asks to be informed of the Governor General's decision by telegraph, he will give all possible assistance etc. to whoever officiates for him.
3362. March 1858. Letter from Dr J Chisholm, Assistant Surgeon, Madras Establishment, Indore. Asks to be Residency Surgeon at Indore. See also 24.
3363. March 1858. Letter from Mr Beadon, Calcutta, to Colonel Stuart. Sends for the Governor General's signature 2 cheques on the Agra Bank for 25,000 Rupees being the amount reserved out of the Lord Mayor's first remittance to meet the assignment made to the Relief Committee at Lahore. Letter from Colonel Stuart, transferring this to Treasury Secretary. Cheques no longer enclosed.
3364. March 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Camp, Marowra. Encloses a letter from Mr Beauvais on the extension of the bullock train from Indore to Goonah. The telegraph people at Indore have bolted to Mhow on a false alarm.
3364a. March 1858. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant F. Peile, Engineers, Hazaribagh. That the prohibition to ladies going to Hazaribagh has been removed.
3365. March 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Camp, Marowra. Encloses a letter from Guneshee Lall, about a Mrs Malton at Jhansi. The Shagurh Rajah is said to have escaped to the jungle. He has hoisted a British flag at Marowra and deputed Mr Thornton to restore confidence among the people. Refers to Captain Mayne's failure to obtain recruits, and to Scindia's [?] desire for Captain Reade and Captain Murray's return.
3366. March 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Camp, Marowra. Encloses a letter from Mr Beauvais about the transport train, and has directed the erection of temporary sheds for the troops at certain stations. Major Orr has gone to Tehree and expects to advance upon Banpore in 3 days.
3367. March 1858. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Returns the enclosed letters from Lieutenant Colonel Shortrede (no longer enclosed). Many points are untrue, and he would be glad if permitted to show what Shortrede's connection with the Survey Department has been. Copy of earlier letter asking for the return of the letters. 3368. March 1858. Letter from Messrs Smyth, Taylor, Charles and Lazarus etc. of Benares. Submits copy of an address to Mr Gubbins, in gratitude for his services at Benares during the crisis and asks the Governor General's permission to present a silver vase to Mr Gubbins. Letter from Dr Leckie enclosing a copy of an address presented by the residents of Benares to Mr Gubbins. He believes the subscribers to the vase to be disinterested. Note from Governor General: draft reply to Messrs Smyth etc. Copy of reply, an order of Government, prohibiting any officer from accepting a gift from those under his official rule will be waived in this instance. The Governor General is glad to take this opportunity of testifying his high appreciation of Mr Gubbins' services.
3369. March 1858. Letter from Mr R J Carbery, Allahabad. Asks for the return of certain photographs and acknowledges receipt of money for photographs. Copy of earlier letter about this.
3370. March 1858. Letter from Lieutenant F Peile, Engineers, Hazaribagh. Asks for permission for ladies to return to Hazaribagh. Copy of reply, permission granted. Copy of letter to Mr Edmonstone, asking him to publish in the Gazette this permission. See also 3358.
3371. March 1858. Letter from G Campbell Esquire, Chief Secretary, Allahabad. Asks for permission to inspect papers in the Foreign Department about the administration of Oudh. Copy of letter to Mr Edmonstone granting this, memorandum.
3372. January to March 1858. Letter from Mr P Woodford, Birch, Ceylon. Asks for information about the death of his relative Colonel Woodford, of the Rifle Brigade. Copy of reply, very little known. Private Secretary will make further enquiries.
3373. March 1858. Letter from Captain T Rattray, Commandant of the Military Police, in the Raj Mahal Hills, Camp, Sasseram. Represents his claims to share, with the officers mentioned in the Gazette of 19 Jan, the honours etc. conferred for services during the Mutiny. Hopes the Governor General will recommend him for a Brevet Majority from 19 Jan. Asks for a gratuity of a year's pay for the European officers and men of his Regiment. Copy of reply, the Governor General has not forgotten the services of Captain Rattray and his Regiment.
3374. March 1858. Letter from Mr Beadon, Calcutta. Furnishes an office memorandum about Captain Man and the Honourable Mr Blundell. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 2599, 2993, 2994, 3275, 4970.
3375. March 1858. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Umballa. In reply, Sir John Lawrence would prefer Dr. Tuson to the other candidates for the medical charge of Murree. Copy of earlier letter asking for a recommendation. 3376. March 1858. Letter from Lieutenant A R Hutchinson, Political Assistant to the Agent for Central India, Indore. Asks to be Political Agent at Bhopal. Copy of reply, application noted.
3377. August 1857 to March 1858. Letter from Captain A Ternan, Narsinghpur. Remonstrates against the appointment of his junior, Captain Pinkney, as Superintendent of Jalaun; states his services, and encloses a copy of a letter from Mr Bushby, the former Commissioner. See also 3379.
3378. December 1857 to March 1858. Letter from the Honourable A Gordon, Argyll House. Introduces Mr Rendel, the Consulting Engineer of the India Railway Company.
3379. October 1857. Letter from Mr Edmonstone, Calcutta. About the appointment of Captain Pinkney, See also 3377.
3380. February to March 1858. Letter from Sir John Lawrence, Camp. About his proposal to abolish the Judgeship of Delhi and to have 2 Commissioners for the Division, and asks whether the suggestion is likely to be approved.
3381. 1858. Anonymous petition. Against a servant in Government House who furnishes the native presses etc. with news from Government House. Not dated. Note, to be shown to Major Bouverie.
3382. March 1858. Letter from the Honourable E Drummond, Accountant General, Calcutta. Forwards an application and certificates of Major Edwards, 2nd Madras Cavalry, for the Superintendency of the Thuggee Depatment (letter from Drummond only). Copy of reply, Edwards will be nominated on the retirement of Major Sleeman. See also 3028, 3296, 3512, 4419, 4470.
3383. March 1858. Letter from Mr James Lean, Civil and Sessions Judge of Mirzapore. Asks if the prohibition to women and children travelling to Mirzapore will be long in force. Copy of reply, they may travel to Ghazeepore, but not to Mirzapore for the time being. See also 3395.
3384. February to March 1858. Letter from Capt. S Mainwaring, 2nd Madras Native Infantry, and interpreter to the Commander-in-Chief, Ootacamund. Asks to be allowed to act as Military Assistant to the Commissioner of Mysore. See also 2843, 3633.
3385. March 1858. Letter from Captain C K Nicholetts, 1st Light Cavalry, Officiating Interpreter to 6th Dragoon Guards, Camp, Kasganj. Asks for re-employment in the Political Department or the command of an Irregular Corps. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. See also 1013.
3386. March 1858. Letter from C. Mecham Esquire, Lieutenant Hodson's Horse, Alum Bagh.
Asks when his sketches left Calcutta, as he fears they may have been despatched per 'Ava'. Copy of reply: they appear to have gone with the mail of 8 February which was lost with the 'Ava'; but Private Secretary will make further enquiries. See also 2908, 2980, 3442.
3387. March 1858. Letter from Mr P S Melvill, Deputy Commissioner, Umballa. In reply, about the qualifications of Mr W S Plowden to be Deputy Commissioner in Oudh. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also 3341.
3388. March 1858. Letter from Mr P S Melvill, Deputy Commissioner Umballa, Camp, Raipur. Asks for an appointment for Colonel S A Abbott in the Oudh Commission. Copy of reply, his name has been noted.
3389. March 1858. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to Chief Commissioner, Punjab, Camp, Delhi. Gives Sir John Lawrence's view about the transfer of Punjab officers to the North West Provinces. Copy of reply about this. See also 3468.
3390. March 1858. Letter from J C Wilson Esquire, Special Commissioner for the punishment of mutineers, Camp, Kasganj. Describes the position and strength of 2,000 mutineers at Kuchla, and a strategic project for disposing of them, with a map. Regrets the want of Tombs Troop of Horse Artillery and the men of the 8th Irregulars. Proposes, with the aid of 7,000 men from Lucknow and by a combined movement of forces under Coke and McCausland, to occupy Bareilly, where every Hindu is in favour of the British. Speaks highly of Captain Murray and Lieutenant Henessy. Brigadier Penny will watch for fugitives from Lucknow and a number of influential Zemindars will rise and kill Khan Bahadoor Khan's officials as soon as the column crosses the Ganges. See also 3394.

3392. March to April 1858. Letter from Lieutenant R Oakes, 52nd Native Infantry, Kamptee. Asks to be an Assistant Revenue Surveyor in Nagpore. Memorandum about this. Copy of reply to Oakes, he is appointed. See also 3405.
3393. March 1858. Letter from Mrs A E Check, Bankura. Asks to be allowed to go to Benares with her husband. Copy of reply: the restriction has been withdrawn. See also 3406.
3394. March 1858. Letter from J C Wilson Esquire, Special Commissioner for the punishment of mutineers, Camp, Kasgunj. Referring to a telegram from the Commander-in-Chief, directing Her Majesty's 10th Rifles to be sent at once to Roorkee, and the 5th Sikhs to Lucknow, asks for the order to be countermanded. Gives news of the Nana's movements, and of Brigadier Seaton's intention to attack the Nana's force should the main body cross over the Ramgunga. See also 3390.
3395. March 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Edmonstone. Withdrawing the prohibition against ladies proceeding to Ghazeepore. See also 3237a, 3383, 3396.
