Folder of papers originally included in a bundle with a cover sheet labelled ‘Applications made to Lord Canning in England regarding appointments in India - The names are entered in a small red book’ [see Mss Eur F699/1/2/12/1]. The papers mostly consist of speculative letters of application for employment in India addressed to Lord or Lady Canning from various individuals, either on their own behalf, or on that of relatives or other acquaintances. The original bundle was originally contained [along with the bundle which now forms Mss Eur F699/1/2/12/3] between two wooden boards labelled ‘Applications received in England and India before assuming the office of Governor General’, and most of the applications in this bundle were received before Lord Canning took up office as Governor General of India on 29 February 1856.
