Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3451 to 3500, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 35 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3401 to 3500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary [Gerald Chetwynd Talbot to 1 April 1858, then Lewin Bentham Bowring] and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3454, 3455, 3457, 3458, 3460, 3463, 3464, 3465, 3486, 3469, 3471, 3472, 3473, 3474, 3476, 3477, 3482, 3484, 3485, 3490, 3492, 3493, 3496, 3497, 3499, and 3500 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3451. March to April 1858. Letter from Mr Sharp, Superintendent, Barrackpore Park. About fruit in the park. Copy of reply about this.
3452. April 1858. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta. Reports the despatch of a copy of the Trunk Road map. Copy of earlier letter asking for this.
3453. March 1858. Letter from Mr Edmonstone, Allahabad. Forwards the Durbar accounts for January and February. Copy of reply returning these.
3454. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Deputy Commissioner of Oudh, Jounpore. Explains the circumstances under which he left his post at Salone, and hopes that one error of judgement will not out-weigh his services. Copy of earlier letter, it has been reported to the Governor General that Carnegy abandoned his post without orders, and before one of the ladies had left the station. He would like an explanation before gazetting Carnegy's appointment to a district in Oudh. Copy of reply, his mistake has been cancelled by his subsequent good service, and he is appointed to a district in Oudh. See also 3505, 3520, 3538.
3455. April 1858. Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner, Benares. Encloses a letter from Mr P Carnegy showing his willingness to go to Oudh; sends a letter from Mr R H Davies about the Government proclamation to rebels, what is the position for the rebels Gholam Hoossein and Benee Madhoo? Memorandum; copy of reply about these matters. See also 3444, 3454, 3460.
3456. March to April 1858. Letter from Captain L Barrow, Lucknow. Applies for the Acting appointment of Commissioner in Oudh in place of Mr Couper. Copy of reply, he is appointed 1st class Deputy Commissioner.
3457. March to April 1858. Letter from Mr G Campbell, Judicial Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Explains the grounds on which he telegraphed that he had nothing to do and applied to act for Mr Muir. Lucknow looks more desolate than Delhi after the siege. Three regiments have started for Azimghur; the Commander-in-Chief blames the Azimghur affair on the civilians. 3458. March to April 1858. Letter from Mr F Cooper, Deputy Commissioner, Umritsir. Asks the Governor General to subscribe to his work 'Crisis' which is intended for the benefit of the Lawrence Asylum. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 12 copies. See also 3609.
3459. March to April 1858. Letter from Mr T Tomlinson, Government House, Calcutta. Reports the steps taken by him for the despatch to Allahabad of the Wellesly despatches, in 5 volumes. Copy of service message from Mr Beadon about these.
3460. March 1858. Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner, Benares. Reports that Azimghur is quite safe. Encloses two letters from Mr Davies (no longer enclosed) and one from Mr Lind, about affairs at Azimghur. He will send Mr Carnegy's reply. See also 3444, 3454, 3455.
3461. March 1858. Letter from Captain D S Dodgson, 30th Native Infantry, Lucknow. Has applied to be Military Secretary to the Chief Commissioner, Oudh, and asks the Private Secretary to use his interest. See also 3489.
3462. March 1858. Petition of Khooby, Agra. Asks for a reply to his earlier petition for the transfer of a case. ½ anna stamp.
3463. February 1858. Letter from Lieutenant W W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Submits a letter from Mr J H Carne reporting the threatened advance of the rebels towards Chirkaree, their futile attempts to seduce the allegiance of the Rajah, who though timid and surrounded by incompetent advisers is loyal, and the urgent necessity for speedy relief, for which he has in vain applied to the military authorities at Cawnpore and to Sir Robert Hamilton, and observes that if these rebels are not soon destroyed they will form a rallying point for all the rebels. 3464. March 1858. Letter from Lieutenant W W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Notifies the reported fall of Chirkari into the hands of the rebels; and the likelihood of all Bundlecund and Rewah being forced into rebellion by the mutineers, who are 6,000 strong and en route to Punnah. Mr Carne and the Rajah of Chirkari are made prisoners. See also 3463, 3465.
3465. March 1858. Letter from Lieutenant W W Osborne, Political Agent, Rewah. Remarks that General Whitlock's column should be at Punnah on 27th or 28th March; the Punnah and Bijawur chiefs have received orders from the rebel Commander-in-Chief, Rang Rao Zantia, to have 'enssud' [?] for 50,000 men by 28th March. Several of the Rewah Sirdars have gone to join the rebels. Measures have been adopted by the Rewah Rajah to secure his Toshakhana. Whitlock's force is too weak. See also 3463, 3464.
3466. April 1858. Letter from Mr T Gladwin, Assistant in the Sudder Dewanry Nizamut Adawlut, Agra. Forwards a copy of a journal he kept in the Agra Fort (not enclosed). Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment. Miscellaneous 380d.
3467. April 1858. Letter from Mr C C Jackson, Member of the Board of Revenue, Agra. Asks to be allowed to go to Allahabad and Benares if the Governor General no longer wishes him to remain at Cawnpore. Copy of reply about this.
3468. March to April 1858. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner, Punjab, Camp, Kussowlee. In reply submits Sir J Lawrence's views about the transfer of Punjab officers to the North West Provinces and vice versa. Copy of reply about this. 3469. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Deputy Commissioner, Oudh, Juanpore. Encloses a letter from Roostum Sahi reporting his readiness to go to Lucknow, and asking for passports for himself and men to go via Allahabad. Most of the Talookdars now wish to make terms; some of the Rajcomar chiefs have petitioned to be allowed asylum at Juanpore for the women and children for fear of them being converted to Mahomedanism on arrival at Lucknow. Copy of reply, Roostum Sahi should be given every encouragement to go to Allahabad.
3470. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Deputy Commissioner, Oudh, Juanpore. Accepts with thanks the 3rd class Deputy Commissionership in Oudh, and believes he could best serve the Government at Sultanpore. Enclosed, a letter in the vernacular. Copy of reply, he must not cross the Oudh border until his safety is assured. See also 3444.
3471. April 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Acknowledges the Private Secretary's note about Roostum Sahi, and reports the receipt of letters about him from Forbes; he hopes that a great many people will come in, in Oudh. Copy of earlier letter sending him copy of Mr Carnegy's letter. See also 3470, 3472.
3472. March to April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Magistrate and Collector, Jounpoor. Has told Rajah Hunwunt Singh and Baboo Roostum Sahi the wishes of Government and reports the latter's reply. The good effect of the Government's proclamation on the Talookdars is being counteracted by the misrepresentations of the rebels, offers to go to Dera to proclaim the British intentions. Copy of reply, a copy of his letter has been sent to the Chief Commissioner; he is not to go into Oudh without further orders. See also 3471.
3473. April 1858. Letter from Mr G B Taylor, Benares. Submits a project for the introduction into India of road steam locomotives and asks for Government aid. Copy of reply, prospectus sent to Captain Yule, Public Works Department, for report; copy of later reply, returning prospectus, further enquiries will be made. See also 3552, 3587, 3606.
3474. April 1858. Letter from Mr F Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares. Reports the retirement of his brother Charles; the death of Sirdar Shere Sing; and the misconduct of the officers from Allahabad, who are said to have horsewhipped amongst others the Rajah of Coorg's sons. It is a mistake to leave Bareilly unoccupied; the Commander-in-Chief could have tranquillised all India, had he exerted himself. Sends a letter from Mr Davies reporting on the state of the roads to Mohundabad and on affairs at Azimghur.
3475. April 1858. Letter from Dr W G W Clemenger, Officiating Civil Assistant Surgeon, Meerut. Applies for the Joint Medical Charge of Simla. Copy of reply, apply to Commander-in-Chief. Endorsed register number A 48.
3476. April 1858. Letter from Mr J C Wilson, Commissioner for the punishment of mutineers, Camp, Suhawur. Acknowledges receipt of letter of 31st March about the amendment of the proclamation for the Nana Sahib; the exception should have extended to the King's son Ferooz Shah and his grandsons Meerza Kochuk and Meerza Shoukut. Requests to know where Birgees Qudar is; also if Brigadier Campbell of the Bays is to be sent home for failing to apprehend the runaways. Copy of reply, no others are to be excluded from the Nana's proclamation. Several of the Oudh Talookdars are seeking to make terms.
3477. April 1858. Letter from Mr H Kavanagh, Assistant Commissioner, Lucknow. Asks for leave of absence; expresses thanks for the grant of 20,000 rupees and the appointment of Assistant Commissioner. Lucknow is greatly improved, the markets are being well supplied and he slept at the furtherest end of the Chouk without a guard. Copy of reply, no leave can be granted in the present state of affairs.
3478. April 1858. Letter from Pundit Ajoodhia Pershad, Tehseeldar, Camp, Sultanpore. Reports particulars of the movements of the enemy and asks to be made Deputy Collector.
3479. April 1858. Letter from Mr Robert Cust, Magistrate and Collector, Allahabad. In obedience to the Governor General's orders, is preparing to start for Lahore. Copy of earlier letter, Sir J Lawrence has expressed so strong a desire for Cust's services, he is being sent to him. See also 3468; Telegraph Message sent numbers 377, 406; Telegraph Message received number 674.
3482. April 1858. Letter from Mr W Ford, Magistrate and Collector of Gooraon. Asks if the grant of batta or gratuities to civilians who were actively employed with the field force is being considered, and mentions some names. ½ anna stamp. Note from Mr Edmonstone; note to and from Colonel Birch; copy of reply, there is no precedent for granting batta to civilians, therefore no such grant will be made.
3483. April 1858. Letter from Mr R Money, Officiating Member, Revenue Board, Agra. Asks when Mrs Money may travel to Agra. Copy of reply, the prohibition is not yet removed.
3484. April 1858. Letter from Baboo Muddoo Soodun Chowdry, Bareilly Magistrate's Head Clerk, Moradabad. Forwards a copy of a vernacular letter from Bareilly with news of the Nana. Also translation.
3485. April 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Charles Reid, Commanding Sirmoor Battalion, Delhi Palace. Submits further suggestions for the colonisation of the Deyrah Dhoon and hills about Mussoorie with men and women of the Gurkha fighting castes; asks to be allowed to establish the colony, and to be appointed Commissioner and to retain command of the Sirmoor Battalion. Copy of reply, the Governor General approves of the proposition for colonization, but the offices of Superintendent and Commandant of the Sirmoor Battalion cannot be combined, and the office of Superintendent is not vacant.
3489. March to April 1858. Letter from Mr G Couper, Secretary to Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Submits Captain Dodgson's application to be Military Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh; the Chief Commissioner having already recommended Captain Hutchinson, cannot support Dodgson's application, but recommends him for other suitable employment. See also 3461.
3490. April 1858. Letter from Mr F Gubbins, Officiating Commissioner, Benares. Has told Mr Davies the Governor General's wishes about his official intelligence; sends a demi-official letter from Davies (no longer enclosed).
3491. April 1858. Letter from Messrs Grindlay and Company, Army and General Agents, Calcutta. About a parcel for Lady Canning. Copy of letter to Mr Tomlinson about this.
3492. March to April 1858. Letter from Captain D McNeill, attached to the Gurkha Force, Lucknow. Reports having effected the rescue of Mrs Orr and Miss Jackson from their imprisonment at Lucknow, found in a house with 5 or 6 of the ex-King's wives, and the ladies were deeply indebted to Darogha Hujed [?] Alee and Rajah Mann Singh.
3493. April 1858. Letter from Mr H Cape, Hureekee. Forwards a copy of his letter to the Commissioner of the Lahore Division suggesting Hureekee as a healthy place for the location of European troops. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3495. April 1858. Letter from Mr C B Denison, Civil Service, Allahabad. Makes suggestions as to how his present appointments should be gazetted, to prevent inconvenience in the Audit Office. Three letters. Memorandum about this; copy of reply, he will be gazetted as a 1st class Deputy Commissioner on special duty. See also 3513, 3563.
3496. April 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Calcutta. Submits copy of a letter to his address from the Commissioner of Patna reporting the despatch of three packages of marble articles, found in the house of the rebel Rajah of Satasee, including a marble chair of state. Copy of reply, the Governor General would like the chair of state sent to Government House.
3497. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Deputy Commissioner Oudh, Juanpore. Forwards a letter from General Lugard, as it is probably the last news of the movements of his Force.
3498. April 1858. Letter from R M King, Civil Service, Benares. Having heard unofficially that he is to be appointed to a post in Oudh, asks if he should come to Allahabad. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, he has been nominated 3rd class Assistant Commissioner and should go to Lucknow.
3499. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Deputy Commissioner Oudh, Juanpore. Sends a note from Roostum Sahi announcing the arrival of General Lugard at Sultanpore; reports a promise of safe-conduct and assistance given to him by certain Talookdars, in return for their retaining possession of their villages. Copy of reply, he must use caution in dealing with the Talookdars, and refer them to the Chief Commissioner who alone can treat with them as to their recovering their estates. See also 3503.
3500. April 1858. Letter from Sir R N C Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General, Central India, Jhansi. Sends a translation of the statement of Sahabooddeen Khansama about Skene's death. Suggests a hint from the Governor General to hasten the column to Calpee. He apprehends no danger from Kotah. He has sentenced the father of the Jhansi Ranee to be hanged. Copy of earlier letter about Captain Skene; copy of another letter about the Jhansi tragedy. See also 2960, 3273, 3322, 3339, 3347, 3355, 3417, 3612.
