Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3501 to 3550, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 36 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3501 to 3600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary [Gerald Chetwynd Talbot to 1 April 1858, then Lewin Bentham Bowring] and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3501, 3502, 3503, 3505, 3510, 3516, 3517, 3518, 3519, 3520, 3524, 3525, 3529, 3532, 3533, 3535, 3538, and 3545 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3501. April 1858. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to Chief Commissioner Punjab, Camp, Jullundur. A general report of the Mutiny is now being prepared for submission by the Chief Commissioner to the Governor General which will mention all the officers the Chief Commissioner wishes to bring to the notice of the Governor General. 3503. April 1858. Copy of a letter to T D Forsyth Esquire, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner, Lucknow. Sending papers from Mr Carnegy.
3504. April 1858. Copy of a letter to E L Brandreth Esquire. Asking him to join Sir John Lawrence at once.
3505. April 1858. Copy of a letter to Mr Edmonstone. Sending him copies of letters between Mr Carnegy and the Private Secretary about Mr Carnegy's desertion of his post at Salone. See also 3454 3520.
3506. April 1858. Copy of reply to Thakoor Dus Sirkar [Sircar] and others, Midnapore. Returning their petition which should be submitted to the Bengal Government.
3507. April 1858. Letter from Mr H Baillie, Superintendent, Alipore Charitable Dispensary. Asking for extension of the Reverend Cahusac's permission to stay in a bungalow in Barrackpore Park. See also 3419.
3508. April 1858. Letter from Dr A Payne, 2nd Assistant Surgeon, Presidency General Hospital, Calcutta. Asks to be given medical charge of the Mysore Princes. Copy of reply, he has been appointed. See also 3543. Copy of reply, he has been appointed.
3509. April 1858. Letter from Baboo Ram Chund Mullick, Calcutta. Re-applies for the post of Deputy Superintendent of the Government Toshakhana. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Foreign Department. See also 3718.
3510. April 1858. Letter from the Reverend M D C Walters, Secretary to Bishop Wilson's Memorial Committee, Calcutta. Acknowledges receipt of Governor General's subscription. See also 3131, 3446.
3511. April 1858. Letter from Lieutenant R Oakes, 52nd Native Infantry, Kamptee. Returns thanks for his appointment to the Nagpore Survey. See also 3392, 3405.
3512. April 1858. Letter from Major G R Edwards, 2nd Madras Cavalry, Sholapore. Returns thanks for the information that he will be nominated to succeed Major Sleeman as Superintendent of Thuggee and Dacoity, and has heard from Sleeman that he will not retire as soon as expected. See also 3028, 3296, 3382, 4419, 4470.
3513. April 1858. Letter from Mr C B Denison, Civil Service, Allahabad. Objects to being gazetted as 1st class Deputy Commissioner. Also note. See also 3495, 3563; Telegraph Messages Sent number 363, 380.
3514. April 1858. Copy of reply to Captain G A Harrison, 33rd Madras Native Infantry, Jubulpore. His application has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3515. March to April 1858. Letter from Major S R Tickell, Deputy Commissioner Amherst, Moulmein. Asks for promotion. Copy of reply, his application will be considered.
3516. April 1858. Letter from Brigadier General G St P Lawrence, Camp, Kota. With regard to Captain Durney's letter to Lord Canning, asks for the brothers James and Cecil Burton to remain at Neemuch, and work under Captain Durney until Oct or Nov. The success of the British has been great, owing to the Rao Rajah's assistance. He hopes Major Morrison may officiate for a time at Kotah as Political Agent. Mentions the explosion of some gunpowder, with the loss of two officers, and the capture and execution of the incendiary. Encloses Captain Durney's letter. Copy of reply about the Burtons; some remarks on the Kotah enquiry. See also 3621 Governor General's Book number 898.
3517. April 1858. Letter from Mr J Norris, Allahabad. Asks for credentials to the Nepal Government to enable him to establish an Agency in connection with the Durbar for the purchase of timber for railway and other purposes. Encloses a note from the Resident stating that Jung Bahadoor has no objection. Copy of reply, sending copy of this letter to Mr Edmonstone, and asking him to furnish the credentials.
3518. April 1858. Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares. Reports the despatch of official news from Mr Davies, and of a feeble attack made by Colonel Dawes at Azimgurh. Sends further particulars of the assault of Her Majesty's Dragoon Guards on the Coorg Prince; the officers were forcing natives to salaam to them.
3519. April 1858. Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares. Returns Mr Davies' official letter (not enclosed), he has frequently urged Davies to submit a regular report of affairs at Azimghur, but attributes his inability to do so to the beleaguered state of the city. Forwards the latest news from Azimgurh and Jounpore.
3520. April 1858. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to Government Foreign Department, Allahabad. Submits an explanation with reference to Major General Sir J Outram's complaint about the supersession of Mr Wingfield, and non-promotion of certain officers in the Oudh Commission; and states that Captain Evans is the only man who has any grounds for complaint, and he may be granted promotion without much difficulty. 3521. April 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Keith Young, Judge Advocate General, Lucknow. Applies on behalf of his brother Arthur Young, Assistant Surgeon to the Joudpoor Legion, for an appointment as Deputy Commissioner in Oudh. With a letter from Captain H Bruce to General Outram in favour of his brother. Copy of reply, refused. See also 3985, 4056, 4079, 4912, 9153, 9154, 9160, 9167, 9168.
3522. April 1858. Letter from Captain L Barrow, Lucknow. Returns thanks for his promotion to a 1st class Deputy Commissionership in Oudh. He has been nominated by Sir J Outram as Special Commissioner for the trial of rebels. Reports that some of the Talookdars and Zemindars have come to terms, and hopes that others will follow, though they are now deterred by the presence of armed rebels in some of the districts.
3523. April 1858. Letter from Mr H C Wake, Civil Service, Calcutta. Declines the appointment of a Deputy Commissionership in Oudh, as he is on sick leave to England; would wish to be appointed during his absence or on his return.
3524. March 1858. Copy of a letter to C Wingfield Esquire, Commissioner, Goruckpore. Sending him an extract from a letter of General Macgregor of 12 Mar narrating Raja Man Singh's movements.
3525. April 1858. Letter from Mr F B Gubbins, Commissioner of Benares. Encloses a letter from Mr R H Davies about affairs at Azimghur; a Mahajun's house has been plundered there. Ruckpal Sing has offered to come in and defend Mahawl, and Davies has directed the Magistrate there to encourage him (Letter from Gubbins no longer enclosed).
3526. April 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta. Has given directions for the transmission of stationery requested by bullock train. Copy of earlier letter about this.
3527. April 1858. Letter from Major G W Williams, Superintendent of Cantonment Police, Agra. Replies about Captain Harris, candidate for the office of Cantonment Joint Magistrate at Cawnpore. Copy of earlier letter asking for information.
3528. April 1858. Letter from Mr C Sharpe. Superintendent of Government Park, Barrackpore. Submits his monthly report on the Park.
3529. April 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel P Gordon, Benares. To Mr Gubbins; has requested that Major Carr's convoy be halted for one day to allow reinforcements from Benares to reach him. He hopes there will be no delay in sending off the Field Detachment for the protection of the Ghazeepore District.
3530. April 1858. Letter from Mr W J Money, Civil Service, late Private Secretary to Sir J Outram, Allahabad. Under the circumstances asks to be allowed to draw an additional 100 Rupees in anticipation of his passing the second standard of examination which he has hitherto not been able to do for want of leisure to study. Copy of reply, granting this request. See also 3548; Telegraph Messages received number 897; Telegraph Messages Sent number 538.
3531. April 1858. Letter from Mr F B Norris, Allahabad. Asks for a decision on his application for a 'grant in aid'.
3532. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Jounpore. Reports how his negotiations with certain Zemindars of Oudh are progressing. Submits a reply from Hunwunt Sing in the vernacular. He has received promises of protection from Burriar Sing, brother of Roostum Sahi. Roostum Sahi has received a proclamation announcing the extermination of the British force before Lucknow. He questions the propriety of Man Singh's conduct in protecting Burdee Hoossein Chuckladar, who is said to have occupied the old fort of Sultanpore after Jung Bahadoor had passed through. Gholam Hossein's force at Jallalpore is reported to have received peremptory orders to join Kooer Sing at Azimgurh. Madho Sing is willing to assist Roostum Sahi to protect Mr Carnegy to Dera, and to raise men to support the police on the re-occupation of Oudh. Bundhur Sing has made professions of loyalty. Carnegy wishes to be allowed to carry on negotiations and to be nominated to the charge of the Sultanpore district, and to proceed to Colingera to facilitate negotiations. Copy of reply, the Governor General does not wish him to cross the Oudh Frontier, but to treat indirectly with the chief landholders.
3533. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Deputy Commissioner Oudh, Camp, Tigra, Jounpore. Reports the success of an attack by General Lugard at Munihur in which the enemy were put to flight, two of their guns captured, and 80 men killed. Lieutenant Charles Havelock of the 12th Irregulars was killed, and some men wounded.
3534. April 1858. Letter from Dr T M Lownds, Assistant Surgeon, Bombay. Asks to be made Assistant Surgeon to the Agent of the Governor General for Rajputana. Copy of reply, he has been appointed. See also 1139, 3539, 3671, 3685, 4442.
3535. April 1858. Letter from Mr J C Wilson, Camp, Sahawur. Reports the movements of Raja Tejj Sing of Mynpooree from Rohilcund towards Soonijpoor [?] Ghat, and the attack made on him by the police of Allygunj, capturing four camels. Recommends that some example may be made of the Kuteea Rajpoots for concealing the fact of the Rajah's passing through. He hopes to be permitted to move to Soraon to protect the Budaoon Zemindars from oppression. Reports the alarm felt at Bareilly on the flight of Taij Sing.
3536. April 1858. Letter from Mr R Money, Member of Sudder Board, Agra. Acknowledges two letters from the Private Secretary which have reached him with open envelopes. See also 3483.
3537. April 1858. Letter from Mr F Gubbins, Officiating Commissioner, Benares. Submits the latest news from Jounpore and Azimgurh (reports not enclosed).
3538. April 1858. Letter from Mr P Carnegy, Deputy Commissioner in Oudh, Jounpore. Submits copy of a proclamation in the vernacular received from Roostum Sahi. See also 3454, 3565, 3520, 3538.
3539. April 1858. Letter from Brigadier General G St P Lawrence, Kotah. Submits a letter from Lieutenant W H Beynon asking to be confirmed in the Rajputana Agency; wishes for Dr Mathias or Dr Lownds to be appointed in place of Dr Elden. Copy of reply about these appointments. See also 1139, 3534, 3637, 3671, 3685, 4442.
3540. April 1858. Letter from Mr J S Campbell, in charge of Jhujjur. As he has no definite appointment he has not been able to draw any salary; asks to be gazetted 1st class Deputy Commissioner from 30 Sep. Copy of reply, this has been done.
3541. March to April 1858. Letter from Dr C Mathias, Assistant Surgeon in medical charge, late Kotah Contingent, Camp before Kotah. Asks to be appointed to the medical charge of the Rajputana Agency. See also 3539, 3542.
3542. April 1858. Letter from Brigadier G St P Lawrence, Kota. Forwards with his recommendation an application from Dr Mathias for the appointment of Surgeon to the Rajputana Agency; asks for either Dr Mathias or Dr Lownds. See also 3534, 3539, 3541.
3543. April 1858. Letter from Captain G Delane, in charge of the Mysore Princes, Calcutta. Prince Gholam Mohumed will be happy to have Dr Payne as medical attendant of the Mysore family. Copy of letter suggesting Dr Payne; note from Edmonstone. See also 3508.
3544. April 1858. Letter from Captain W R Shakespear, Officiating 1st Assistant to the Governor General's Agent for Central India, Camp, Jhansi. Renews his application to be confirmed in his office. Copy of reply, the permanent office is not vacant. See also 3132, 3577.
3545. April 1858. Letter from Baboo Mudhoosoodum Choudry, Mooradabad. Submits a memorandum in the vernacular with news of the districts of Bareilly, Budaon, Bijnour.
3546. April 1858. Letter from Captain H R James, Deputy Commissioner, Peshawar. Applies for one of the Oudh Commissionerships and states his services. Copy of reply, that all the Oudh Commissioners have been appointed.
