Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3901 to 3950, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 40 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3901 to 4000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary [Humphrey de Bohun Devereux, then Gerald Chetwynd Talbot from 1 August 1856, then Lewin Bentham Bowring from 1 April 1858], and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3909, 3910, 3916, 3925, 3926, 3927, 3928, 3934, 3935, 3938, and 3948 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3901. June 1856. Copy of a letter to Lieutenant G F F Vincent, 30th Native Infantry, Agra. Regretting that in view of the terms of his censure at the Court Martial and by the Commander in Chief, he cannot be appointed 2nd Assistant to the Commissioner of Ajmere. Memorandum about the post. See also 6501.
3902. August 1858. Memorandum. That number 3902 was transferred to the Secretary North West Provinces.
3903. June 1858. Letter from Brigadier General G St P Lawrence, Officiating Agent to the Governor General Rajputana, Aboo. Asks for news; he hears that Sir Richmond Shakespear is down for the Rajputana Agency. Endorsed: answered privately.
3906. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner, Lucknow. Reports that there are 3 vacancies of 1st class Assistant in the Commission, and suggests names. Copy of earlier letter asking for nominations. See also 3832, 4000, 4440.
3907. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner, Lucknow. Returns Mr Macarthy's certificates (no longer enclosed), states that there is no vacancy for him in the Police, and the duties of Extra Assistant require special training. Copy of earlier letter sending an application from Macarthy. See also 3715, 3946.
3908. June 1858. Letter from Mr B P Singer, Extra Assistant, Nagpore. Sends a letter (no longer enclosed) asking for promotion. Memorandum about this; copy of reply, his application should be made through the Commissioner, Mr Plowden. See also 3971, 4019, 4183, 4235, 4285, 4386, 5089, 5278.
3909. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner, Lucknow. Sends copies of 2 letters, from Mr Forbes on the eastern side of Oudh, and from Lieutenant Clarke on the western side; and observes that until there is a show of force, there will be no perceptible progress; thought the defeat of the large gathering at Nawabgunge by General Grant, the death of the Moulvee and the reoccupation of Gwalior had a good effect. There are now only a few large parties of rebels, and these are dwindling. The troops in Oudh are generally healthy.
3910. June to July 1858. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Morar. Suggests places to house the troops, the rains having set in. Encloses a letter from Dr Arnott reporting the number of European patients in Hospital, and suggests a Bombay Superintending surgeon be sent for the present. Sir Hugh Rose will go to Poonah via Mhow. The fugitives had lost all their guns. Endorsed: answered privately.
3912. June to July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel E W Scott, Inspector General of Ordnance and Magazine, Fort William. Sends a letter about cast-iron rollers for the Barrackpore Park. Indent enclosed, and copy of a letter. Copy of reply about these. See also 3416.
3913. June to July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant C P Hunter, Adjutant 1st Assam Light Infantry Battalion, Dibrughur. Requests that on the grounds of ill-health wishes to withdraw his application for a civil appointment in Assam; and asks for another post. Copy of reply, he does not name the kind of post he wishes. See also 3613, 3623, 4073, 4075, 4138.
3914. June to July 1858. Letter from Captain D J Macleod, Junior Assistant Commissioner of Arracan, Akyab. Asks for civil employment in Burma or the Tenasserim Provinces (Letter no longer enclosed). Copy of letter sending this application to the Private Secretary to the President in Council.
3915. June 1858. Letter from Mr D McArthy, Patrol, Robertsgunge via Chunar. Sends an application to Mr Montgomery for an appointment in the Oudh Commission (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, his application has been duly forwarded. See also 3786, 3907, 3946.
3916. June 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asks for Goolab Sing and men to be sent to Lucknow. Sends a letter from Mr Lawrence, complaining of the Military arrangements in the direction of Oonao.
3917. June 1858. Letter from Mahomed Reza Istambolee, Allahabad. Returns thanks for the Governor General's donation of 500 Rupees.
3918. June 1858. Letter from Baboo Praunath Bose, Calcutta. Sends a letter further to his failure to gain employment in the Foreign Office.
3919. June 1858. Letter from Rughobeer Persad, late Mohurrir of Foujdaree Court, Ghazeepore. Submits a complaint at his dismissal from the post of Jumadar.
3920. June 1858. Letter from Mr J B Thomas, Purneah. Asks for employment. Note of this application.
3921. June to July 1858. Letter from Colonel H B Edwardes CB, Commissioner of Peshawur, Murree. Encloses a letter to the Governor General (no longer enclosed) asking for home leave, as his wife in England is very unwell. Returns thanks for the Private Secretary 's letter with enclosure which was duly sent to Jowalior Sing, who though a clever man, is very timid and not suited to Peshawur at all. He has come up to Murree to help Sir John answer the questions of the Court as to the re-organisation of the Army, they have sent off the principal answers that day. Copy of reply, the Governor General will answer his application for leave personally. Durand says the answers from Sir John Lawrence are the most comprehensive yet received. 3922. June to July 1858. Letter from the Honourable W T Lewis, Resident Councillor, Penang. Advises the despatch by steamer 'Lightning' of two baskets of Mangusteens and one of oranges for Lady Canning.
3923. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr C Panioty, Calcutta. Submits the prospectus of a work called 'Regoletta, or the Sciabunder's Daughter, a Tale of Burmah of the Eighteenth Century, together with heads of the People of Rangoon', for the patronage of the Governor General and his staff.
3924. July 1858. Letter from Mr J G Cordery, Civil Service, Allahabad. Asks to be appointed to one of the vacancies in the Punjab. Telegraph messages sent number 483, 489; Telegraph Messages received numbers 822, 825.
3925. May 1858. Letter from A Turnbull Esquire, British Consul, Marseilles. Encloses two telegrams from the Earl of Malmesbury and Lord Granville, of 11 May, announcing the resignation of Lord Ellenborough, because his colleagues disapproved of his act of ordering the despatch to be produced without their knowledge.
3926. June 1858. Letter from Mr G P Money, Magistrate of Shahjehanpore to the Commissioner of Allahabad. A letter extract sending details about the death of the Moulvee of Fyzabad in an attack on the Rajah of Powain's Gurrhee. He recommends that the full reward promised by the Government, be paid to the Rajah and his brother. He has recaptured two runaway life convicts; 21 sowars have returned because of the Governor General's proclamation. He hopes the Mitowlee Rajah will now try to capture Khan Bahadoor Khan and Golam Kadir Khan.
3927. May 1858. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Commissioner of Goruckpore, Bustee. Reports the dissatisfaction of the Gurkhas at the Government of India not having given a portion of Goruckpore to their Maharajah as a reward. The Gurkhas despise the British, and the British officers dislike the Gurkha officers. There is little doubt that the Gurkhas came to an arrangement with the Rajah of Gonda for a safe passage across the river. He does not think it would be wise to have any great number of Gurkhas for the Police Corps of his district, but he will still go on enlisting, as they make good soldiers under English officers.
3928. May 1858. Letter from Mr C Wingfield, Commissioner of Goruckpore, Bustee. Reports the return of the Rajah of Gonda at the instigation of the Begum, after the Rajah had gone half-way home, and the collection of rebels at Amorha. He has urged Colonel Rowcroft to move to Amorha; if he refused, Wingfield would protest very strongly.
3929. July 1858. Letter from the Reverend P W Kellner, Officiating Chaplain, Field Force, Lucknow. Proposes to apply to the Honorable Court for a permanent Assistant Chaplaincy and asks for a recommendation. Copy of reply, the Governor General will be happy to forward his application with a recommendation. See also 3887, 3980.
3930. June to July 1858. Letter from Captain C B Young, Officiating Chief Engineer, Public Works Department for Bengal, Calcutta. Wishes to be confirmed in his appointment. Copy of reply, his claims will be considered.
3931. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr H R Beetson, Number 1 Esplanade, Calcutta. Asks for an appointment in the Police Corps, North West Provinces, or Bengal Presidency. Copy of reply, refused, as a knowledge of the language and people is essential. See also 5925.
3932. July 1858. Letter from Major R J Edgell, 53rd Native Infantry Benares Applies to be Benares Pay Master.
3933. June to July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant J P Harris, 21 Native Infantry, Cawnpore. Applies to be Pension Pay Master of Lucknow and Cawnpore.
3934. June to July 1858. Letter from Major G W Williams, Superintendent of Police Battalion in the North West Provinces, Dehra. Sends a letter about Sirdar Gottum Sing's offer to provide Hillmen from Kangra and Mundee. Adds that it is very difficult to get good men in the N. W. Province for the Police, and the scarcity of recruits at Allahabad and Benares is still greater; he is therefore trying to recruit Rohillas and Gonds and Gurkhas. The new Police in the Meerut and Agra Division are doing well.
3935. May to July 1858. Letter from Mrs Thornhill, care of Messrs Dent Palmer and Company London. Relates the valuable services rendered by her late son, in proof of which extracts from letters are enclosed, though his services have been omitted in the Lucknow despatches, which omission she asks, may now be rectified. Asks for promotion for her surviving son Mr E B Thornhill; that the widow of her late son be compensated for the loss of her husband's property in Lucknow, and be paid the arrears of his pay and the half batta to which he was entitled as one of the Lucknow garrison, and granted a pension. 5 enclosures Copy of reply, Mrs Thornhill's son will soon be promoted. Her daughter-in-law's claims will be dealt with.
3936. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr A Dunlop, Bombay. Submits particulars of an account, in reply ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, settling bill. See also 1959, 2070, 3838.
3937. July 1858. Letter from Mr George Osborn, Sub Deputy Opium Agent, Goruckpore Division, Goruckpore. Asks if his family may return to Goruckpore. Copy of reply, the prohibition is still in force.
3938. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner, Lucknow. Approves of the suggestion that an officer be sent to Allahabad to receive tenders of allegiance on the part of any Talukdars wishing to do so, and will send Mr Tucker. Mr Forbes had done much good at Dehrah, but as the rebels contemplate attacking Roostum Sahi he may have to fall back on Budshapore or Jounpore.
3939. July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant C R Shaw, Assistant Commissioner Oudh, Camp, Nawabgunge. Asks to be appointed 2nd class Assistant. Copy of reply about this.
3940. July 1858. Letter from Mrs R Money, Calcutta. Asks to be allowed to go to Cawnpore. Copy of reply, she may go by steamer to Benares, but the road journey is not safe.
3941. May to July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant C V Jenkins, 47th Native Infantry, Hong Kong. Asks for a military or civil appointment in Oudh or elsewhere, with copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, he cannot be considered for a civil appointment while his regiment is on foreign service. See also 5239.
3942. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr C W West, Inspecting Post Master, Cananore Division, Camp. Sends a copy of an earlier letter about the intrigue of the Nabob of Shanondur and his son-in-law, a Lucknow man in the pay of the Nana, suggests the stationing of European Troops on the Tombooden Hills; that the correspondence of natives be examined; and that the Mohamedan servants of the Governor General's establishment be replaced by native Christians. Asks for a better post for himself, and recommends his son Charles West. See also 3594, 3765.
3943. June to July 1858. Letter from Captain P M Taylor, Deputy Commissioner Western District, Hyderabad, Shorapoor. Forwards a letter to the Governor General returning thanks for his appointment. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3944. June to July 1858. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent, Darjeeling. Having heard that Lieutenant Colonel Ramsay does not return to Nepal, applies to succeed him as Resident there. Copy of reply, he has been wrongly informed that Ramsay is not returning. See also 1087,1939.
3946. July 1858. Letter from Mr D McArthy, Patrol, Chunar. Submits his wish for employment anywhere. Copy of earlier letter sending him copy of a letter from Mr Montgomery. See also 3907, 3915.
3947. July 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Letter in reply, about Mr Sutherland's application to act for Baboo Prosunno Comar. See also 3716.
3948. July 1858. Letter from Mr D C Mackey, Calcutta. Acknowledges with thanks the Governor General's subscription for the late Mr Goldsworthy's family. See also 3848, 3895.
