Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 3951 to 4000, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 40 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 3901 to 4000’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 3951, 3952, 3956, 3957, 3958, 3960, 3964, 3969, 3972, 3975, 3986, 3990, and 4000 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
3951. July 1858. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Gwalior. Explains that his letter number 70 of 22 Feb was written before he received Mr Beadon's letter about Dhar prize money; on receipt of Mr Beadon's letter he wrote immediately to the Governor General. Governor General's Book number 941.
3952. July 1858. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Gwalior. Reports having traced the adopted boy of the Jhansi Rani to a village near Kurrowra, whither he was taken by Munsa Ram, a nephew in law of Jurrow Koowur after the funeral of the Rani at a village near Nurwar, and believes they are likely to be joined by some disaffected Thakurs; they have about 500 followers, but no guns or money. The bodies of those who fell in the massacre at Gwalior were not stripped or mutilated; they have been buried by order of Scindia. The absence of an English clergyman prevents service being read over them. The whole of the troops for Jhansi have left, the 95th being the only regiment beyond the regular force for Gwalior. Endorsed: answered privately.
3953. June to July 1858. Letter from Major G Timins, late Commandant, United Malwa Contingent, Mhow. Asks for political appointment, or in connection with the organisation of a corps, should such be required, in place of the late Malwa Contingent. Copy of reply, refused. See also 4004.
3954. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr C West, Paulghut. Applies for various appointments. Four ½ anna stamps. Copy of reply, refused.
3956. July 1858. Letter from Mr C B Thornhill, Officiating Commissioner of Allahabad. Replies that the steamer 'Berhampooter' is now at Cawnpore. Note about this.
3957. June 1858. Letter from Pundit Ajoodhia Persad, 2nd class Extra Assistant Commissioner Oudh, Camp, Dehra. Reports the result of two actions at Shahgunge between Rajah Man Sing and the rebels. Shaikh Ramzan Ally Naib Chuckledar is oppressing the zemindars of the Sultanpore district; a new Moulvee has raised the standard of Deen, and is collecting people near Allahabad, and Jooree Sing- and Gunesh Sing propose to attack the British at Suraon. Depredations and oppressions are being committed by Soolta Hossain and Mahomed Hossain; Fuzle Azim Chockladar has surrounded Thacoor Persaud Sing, Rajah of Teeloee, a friend of the British.
3958. July 1858. Letter from Pundit Ujoodhia Persad, Extra Assistant in Oudh, Camp, Dehra. Reports a temporary truce between Man Sing and the rebels has ended. Shahgunge is besieged, and unless the English send help, Man Sing will be defeated. The rebels are given ammunition by the Begum, who has established a Mint at Fyzabad to have a coin of her own; names the rebel chiefs who are committing excesses in all directions. The Rajah of Teeloee was defeated and his fort captured. Also copy of extracts from this letter.
3960. July 1858. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Gwalior. Reports that the Rajahs of Banpore and Shahghur are coming in. Wishes that the amnesty he proposed could be approved. Gives his views as to where the rebels will go. Scindia is puzzled how to set up another army. Reports movements of British troops. Has visited the spot where the Jhansi Rani was burnt, and the grave of the woman Moondee, and gives details. Asks when Lieutenant Shakespear will be gazetted as 1st Assistant at Indore.
3961. July 1858. Letter from Mr C F Wintte, Sub Deputy Agent, Opium Department, Futtehpore. Asks permission for his family to join him. Copy of reply, refused.
3962. July 1858. Letter from Mr J D Lyne, late Commission Agent and Auctioneer, Delhi. Having heard that Europeans are to be rewarded by Government for saving the lives of others, names those saved by him from the Delhi massacre, when he lost all his property, for which he has not yet received compensation. Copy of reply, he should apply through the proper channels; he is mistaken in thinking that Europeans were to be rewarded for saving the lives of others, as a general rule. See also 6607.
3963. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Lahore. Reports that Dr Hilson has been recommended for the medical charge of the 4th Punjab Infantry. The Jhujjur frontier is threatened by rebels.
3964. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr F B Drummond, Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector of the 2nd grade, Bhangulpore. States his case, and sends a copy of his Memorial to the Honourable Court of 1858; wishes the Governor General to prevent his supercession a second time. Copy of reply, explaining his apparent supercession.
3966. July 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Has asked the Madras Government to send the white elephant to Calcutta, for Barrackpore, but has not heard what has been done.
3967. June 1858. Letter from Mr H Sandeman, Officiating Magistrate and Collector of Jounpore. Asks if he has been appointed to the Financial Department. All is quiet at Jounpore, the only remaining source of anxiety is Man Sing's conduct. ½ anna stamp. Copy of reply, he will hear officially about the Financial Department's appointments.
3968. July 1858. Letter from Mr H Sandeman, Jounpore. Further to his prospects in the Financial Department.
3969. June 1858. Letter from Mr George Brown, Calcutta. Returns thanks for the Governor General's donation to the fund for the late Mr Venables' memorial. See also 3837, 3893; Telegraph Messages Sent numbers 464, 469; Telegraph Message received numbers 795.
3970. July 1858. Letter from Mr J G Cordery, Civil Service, Allahabad. Asks to know the result of the Private Secretary's application to Mr Temple on his behalf. See also 3924; Telegraph Messages Sent number 483, 489.
3971. July 1858. Letter from Mr B Singer, Extra Assistant, Nagpore. Submits an explanation of his differences with other officers of the Commission and asks for favorable consideration of his application See also 3908.
3972. July 1858. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Gwalior. Acknowledges receipt of the amnesty letter; he has had a long letter from Sir G Clerk. See also 3601, 3790.
3973. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Money, Judge of Sudder Dewanry Court, Agra. Asks if Mrs Money may join him at Agra. ½ anna stamp. Endorsed: answered privately. See also 3940.
3974. July 1858. Letter from Mr J Lean, Judge of Mirzapore. Asks for permission to send for his family. See also 3574.
3975. July 1858. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Gwalior. Reports that the ex-Rajahs of Banpore and Shahgurh have surrendered to Mr Thornton. The chief notables of Bundelcund have been disposed of, except the adopted Jhansi boy who will yet be caught. Scindia is doing well, dealing out justice calmly yet surely. Hamilton hopes to have the telegraph wire as far as Seepree in another day.
3977. July 1858. Letter from Colonel J Byng, Commanding Madras Cavalry, Camp, Bustee. Asks for an appointment in one of the Commissions or in the Revenue Department or an uncovenanted appointment, for his son, now in Australia. Copy of reply, he cannot obtain any such appointment unless he speaks the vernacular language.
3979. July 1858. Letter from Mr H C Hulse, Presidency Veterinary Surgeon, Calcutta. Submits a memorial from the widow of the late R Cameron, who went to India on business in 1856, and lost his life at Lucknow; asks for a pension for the widow and orphan, and the Batta granted to the defenders of the Garrison, and any compensation suitable (Memorial no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, the Memorial has been transferred to the Military Secretary.
3980. July 1858. Letter from the Reverend P W Kellner, Officiating Chaplain, Lucknow. Forwards his application to the Honourable Court for an appointment as an Assistant Chaplain on the Bengal Establishment. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. Also memorandum. See also 3887, 3929.
3983. July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant B Wyld, 3rd Madras Europeans, 4th class Executive Officer, Public Works Department, Rangoon. Asks to be appointed 1st class Executive Engineer at Moulmein. Copy of letter to the President in Council forwarding this application; copy of reply to Wyld.
3984. July 1858. Petition of Moonshee A Rasili, Dugshai. Repeats his request that his services during the siege of Delhi be considered.
3985. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Wishes to have Dr Young as a 1st class Assistant or Deputy Commissioner 3rd class. 7 other letters about this. See also 3521, 4056, 4079, 4912, 9153, 9154, 9160, 9167, 9168.
3986. July 1858. Letter from the Reverend J E W Rotton, Chaplain of Meerut. Submits a copy of his Memorial to the Court of Directors, asking for increased allowances for chaplains during campaigns. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
3987. July 1858. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, Secretary to the Government of India Military Department with the Governor General Allahabad. States that Number 1 Old Dragoon Barracks at Cawnpore have been made over to the Roman Catholics for divine worship, for the time being. See also 3759.
3988. July 1858. Letter from Captain B Hawes, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Hazareebagh. Asks for civil or political employment. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. See also 4022, 4130.
3989. July 1858. Letter from Mr P H Egerton, Magistrate and Collector, Delhi. Asks if the restriction on ladies travelling to the Upper Provinces is likely to be removed by next cold season. Copy of reply, no forecast can be made. See also 4035.
3990. July 1858. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General Central India, Gwalior. Encloses a copy of a note prepared for General Napier on the probable line of retreat of Tantia and others from Jeypore. He will leave for Indore as soon as possible, leaving Lieutenant Shakespear to hurry on the work, Major Macpherson being rather slow. Brigadier Smith has orders to move to Kota to prevent the park of artillery falling into the rebels' hands. Scindia has placed various men under arrest, and sent them to Hamilton.
3991. July to December 1858. Letter from Mr W Twemlow, late Inspecting Post Master of Pegu and Collector of Customs, Moulmein. Complains that he has been refused his travelling allowances. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot interfere. Also note about this.
3992. July 1858. Letter from Mr D Tapley, Officiating Registrar of Seamen, Calcutta. Asks to be confirmed in his post when the vacancy arises; sends copies of correspondence and testimonials. Copy of reply, the President in Council will make the appointment. See also 394.
3993. July 1858. Letter from Surgeon J McClelland, attached to the Field Force, Lucknow. Asks for his name to be included in the list of medical officers from which existing vacancies of Superintending Surgeons are filled up. Copy of reply, promotions to Superintending Surgeoncies have already been made. See also 4132.
3994. July 1858. Letter from Mr H H Sevenoakes, Officiating Marine Store-Keeper, Calcutta. Sends letters in support of his application to be Registrar of Seamen (no longer enclosed).
3995. July 1858. Letter from Mr H H Sevenoakes, Calcutta. Submits an official application for the office of Registrar of Merchant Seamen. Copy of reply, the President in Council will make the appointment.
3996. July 1858. Letter from Mrs L Check, Benares. Asks for the Private Secretary's interest on behalf of her brother in law Major Tickell who wishes to be Commissioner of Moulmein. Copy of reply, since the Governor General came up country, all appointments in the Tenasserim Provinces and Pegu have been at the disposal of the President in Council.
3997. July 1858. Letter from Mrs K Cross, Benares. Asks if her husband may not rejoin his regiment at Benares, that he may be appointed to one of the new Police Corps. With a telegram from Major Brasyer. See also 3999, 4190.
3998. July 1858. Letter from Captain W D Dickson, 3rd Native Infantry, Sholapoor. Asks to be appointed Deputy Commissioner in the Hyderabad Assigned Districts, with memorandum of his services. Copy of reply, there is no vacancy at present, and his qualifications are insufficient. See also 4116, 4182.
3999. July 1858. Letter from Mrs K Cross, Benares. Asks if her husband may re-join his regiment, if no other appointment is available. See also 3997.
4000. July 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary, to the Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. With reference to the Private Secretary's telegram of 16 July, forwards copy of a circular to the 3 daily papers of Calcutta, stating that the proclamation in 'The Phoenix' of 12 July, said to have been issued by the Governor General and taken from the 'Bombay Gazette', is a pure invention.
