Contains the following letters from Charles Canning, (sent from Calcutta and Camp, Benares) to Clanricarde:
letter offering Dunkellin a post in India, but stating that he must tidy his handwriting up, discussing personal matters, and mentioning a newspaper cutting [no longer enclosed] (3 April 1856);
letter regarding Dunkellin's apology to Calcutta society (after giving away tickets to a ball), and discussing the punishment that should be given, professional or otherwise (18 January 1857);
letter regarding the state of India and the British Army, expressing sadness at the amount of 'innocent English lives lost', and hinting that the English Newpapers helped the rebellion by pointing out weak points (3 July 1857);
letter enclosing a pamphlet [no longer enclosed] (5 July 1860);
letter regarding putting out a 'moniteur' to counteract the 'infernal lying of the newspaper' (8 October 1860);
letter regarding the small success of the 'moniteur', though 'The Times' is still talking about the alleged torture in collecting taxes from Lucknow City, Canning's hopes for Oude and the success of the Talookdars, going up country to Benares and Nerbuddda, and enclosing newspaper cuttings [no longer enclosed] (November 1860);
and letter enclosing some papers missed out of the last packet sent [no longer enclosed], and discussing meeting with Holkar and exchanges of territory (8 December 1860).
