Correspondence from Queen Victoria, written to Charlotte Canning in England and India. Letters written before Charlotte Canning's departure for India include invitation by the Queen for her to become Lady of the Bedchamber, 28 May 1842, with copy of Charlotte Canning's reply, and letter regarding the same proposal made to her sister Louisa, Marchioness of Waterford, in 1851 that was declined. The correspondence was enclosed in a wrapper marked letters returned from Lord de Tabley [Charles Canning's friend and executor].
Correspondence from Aug 1857 to Jul 1859 were burned in a fire in Lady Canning's tent in Dec 1859 and underwent conservation in 2017.
Some envelopes from this correspondence were retained by Charlotte Canning and can be found in Mss Eur F699/2/4/2.
