Letters to, and notes by, Lord Clanricarde relating to Indian affairs, regarding subjects including: railways, finance, public works, Lord Dalhousie’s government and the civil service, the army and the rebellion, the India Loan Bill, the Bengal salt monopoly, printed matter on the Bengal civil service, expenditure on public works, and various lawsuits including the case of Mr Thomas and the treatment of Bhawanny Lallah.
Includes lengthy correspondence from: John Dickinson of the India Reform Society in London; W. N. Lees, who writes at length on the causes of and solutions to the Indian rebellion (where he asks not to be named his signature has been cut away), from England in 1857 and from India in 1858, including a letter written from Mahomedan College, Calcutta, 1 January 1858, where he has gone to investigate the root of the 'foul plot', and later sending information regarding Sikh unrest; Colin Mackenzie to Geoffrey Nightingale, regarding accounts of events at Bolarum, with a copy of his letter to Kaye on the causes of the rebellion, and a copy of the opinion of James Bell, Major General in the Madras Army, on Mackenzie's account; copy letter of 7 September 1857 from Captain Meadows Taylor to his father, describing his departure and journey as he was despatched to Buldana. Also includes a letter from the Rajah of Coory in London thanking Clanricarde for his assistance and advice, and enclosing a copy letter from Colonel Macgregor, Cawnpore, to the Rajah of 1849.
