Prefixed is a letter from Gabriel Mathias to the trustees of the British Museum, containing an extract from the will of James Mathias esq from which it appears that this volume, as well as Add MS 5037-5062, are in the handwriting of Henry Needler esq, their previous owner. The manuscripts were presented to James Mathias esq by Hester Needler, the widow of Henry Needler esq.
This volume contains a collection of Motets, Madrigals, and Masses, for several voices, in score, from MSS. in the Music School and in Bodley's and Christ Church Libraries, Oxford (see index at beginning). Unless the contrary is stated, they are by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and for 5 voices. Nos. 1-6, 16-21, 27-38 are from his Offertoria, 1593; nos. 22-24 from his Motettorum liber V, 1584; nos. 39-52, from Book iv (Ex Canticis Canticorum) of the same work, 1584.
