Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4001 to 4050, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 41 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4001 to 4100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4004, 4005, 4007, 4008, 4011, 4020, 4021, 4030, 4041, 4042, 4047, 4048, and 4050 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4001. July 1858. Letter from Mr J A Gomez, Calcutta. Asks for money.
4002. July 1858. Letter from Mr A Dunlop, Bombay. Acknowledges receipt of money in settlement of an account. 1/2 anna stamp. See also 1959, 2070, 3838, 3936.
4004. July 1858. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Gwalior. In reply, believes that Major Timins, though a very good and kind man, has no capacity as a soldier or commander. The rebels' ranks are thinning fast, and they are not far from Sheopore, and may be overtaken by Colonel Holmes. He will move towards Seepree and Goonah on 19 Jul. See also 3953.
4005. July 1858. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Gwalior. Reports the movements of the rebels. He hopes that Scindia's people at Sheopore are reliable.
4006. July 1858. Letter from Mr F B Norris, Allahabad. Forwards a petition from Gholam Nubbee Khan, asking to be restored to the Derajat Survey (no longer enclosed). See also 4208.
4007. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Submits a memorandum about Captain Hearsey. Copy of earlier letter asking if Captain William Hearsey has applied for a pension or any other claim; has he applied for batta for being one of the Lucknow Garrison? Is anything known of the natives who saved his family, and has anything been done for them? Also note from Canning for this letter. 4008. July 1858. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Gwalior. Believes his presence is necessary at Mhow; gives movements of the rebels and the pursuing column. States his objections to Captain Mayne's political appointment, and hopes it will be cancelled. Sir Hugh Rose has passed Mhow and was much pleased with his reception at Indore. Telegraph messages sent number 493.
4009. July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant J F McAndrew, 19th Native Infantry, late Military Secretary Gurkha Force, Allahabad. Applies for the 1st vacancy as 2nd class Assistant Commissioner in Oudh. Note from Mr Edmonstone, 18th Oct (1858?) about appointments in the Commissions; also mentions the difficulty of translating 'Def: Fid:' into the vernacular. See also 3882, 3906, 4440.
4010. July 1858. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent Barrackpore Park. Reports on the Park. Memorandum. See also 3416.
4011. July 1858. Letter from Pundit Ajoodhia Persaud, Extra Assistant Commissioner Camp, Dehra. Reports the arrival at Shahgunge of Mahomed Hussun with 2,000 men and 7 guns to aid in the attack of that place which is surrounded by the rebels under Mehendee Hussun and Mahomed Hussun Nazims. There is a scarcity of ammunition among the rebels and Mehendee Mussun has gone to ask the Begum for ammunition. Names certain Chuckladars who have assembled to attack Dehra. Shurteepore Fort has been occupied by the rebels owing to the treachery of Man Sing's men. Reports the result of a battle at Turole in which many rebels were killed.
4012. July 1858. Letter from Mr A H Turnbull, Sub Deputy Opium Agent, Cawnpore. Asks for permission to send for his family. Copy of reply, the restriction has been withdrawn, 23 July.
4013. July 1858. Letter from Mr A Forbes, Proprietor of the 'Dacca News', Dacca. In reply, the paper was sent to the Private Secretary until 7 Jun 1858.
4015. July 1858. Letter from Mr W P Palmer, civil auditor, Fort William. Forwards a list of covenanted civil servants as on 1 May 1858 (No longer enclosed).
4016. July to August 1858. Letter from Mr W Scott, photographer, Ootacamund. Offers his services as photographer in the North West Provinces, if a post be made similar to those in Madras and Bombay. Copy of reply, the Governor General is contemplating such an appointment. See also 4047, 4062, 4484.
4019. July 1858. Letter from Mr B P Singer, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Nagpore. Renews his application for promotion. See also 3908, 3971, 4183, 4235.
4020. July 1858. Letter from the Reverend A B Spry, Chaplain, Allahabad. About a harmonium. Four other letters about this. 1/2 anna stamp.
4021. July 1858. Letter from Mr H V Bayley, Civil Service, Secretary to the Colvin Testimonial, Calcutta. Forwards the minutes of a meeting convened to do honour to the late Mr Colvin's memory. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, sending 1,500 Rupees from the Governor General to the Colvin Memorial. 4022. July 1858. Letter from Captain B Hawes, 2nd European Bengal Fusiliers, Hazareebagh. Further to his application for a Police appointment. Sends copies of letters. See also 3988, 4130.
4023. July 1858. Letter from Mr C Anquetil, Calcutta. Asks for money and employment. See also 5675.
4024. July 1858. Letter from Mr C W West, Inspecting Post Master, Camp, Juddanee. Has despatched a gift of some sandalwood and ebony curiosities. Copy of reply, the Governor General requests that he will not again forward anything to him.
4025. July 1858. Letter from Dr E Impey, Post Master General, Bombay. Reports that the Governor General's express of 11 Jul arrived at Bombay after the departure of the steamer. Suggests that in future notice of intention to despatch an express be telegraphed. Endorsed: memorandum about this.
4026. July 1858. Letter from Lieutenant E Thompson, 67th Native Infantry, Assistant Settlement Officer, Mooltan Calcutta. Asks to be transferred to the Oudh Commission as a 1st class Assistant. See also 4034, 4099, 4104. Telegraph Messages Sent number 497, 500, 504; Telegraph Messages received number 843, 844.
4027. July to August 1858. Letter from Lieutenant J T Norgate, 69th Native Infantry, Mooltan. Asks for staff employment. Letter about him. Copy of reply, application noted.
4030. July 1858. Letter from Captain T Dennehy, 2nd Native Infantry, Allahabad. As there is no immediate chance of active service for Captain Golab Sing at Allahabad, he has ordered him to commence preparation for marching to Lucknow. Endorsed: answered privately. See also 3780, 3812.
4032. July 1858. Copy of a letter to Moonshee Chutur Bhorj Suhai, Proprietor of the 'Soorya Prukash' paper, Agra. He need not send copies of the newspaper to the Governor General.
4033. July 1858. Letter from Mrs K Cross, Benares. Asks if any appointment has been given to her husband. Copy of reply, not yet. See also 4049.
4034. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Recommends Lieutenant E Thompson to be 1st class Assistant Commissioner in Oudh. See also 4026, 4099, 4104.
4035. July 1858. Letter from Mr P H Egerton, Deputy Commissioner, Delhi. Asks if the prohibition on ladies proceeding up country is removed. Copy of reply; the prohibition has been removed from Allahabad, Mirzapore, Cawnpore, Agra, and all the Districts of the Meerut Division as far as regards Sudder Stations. See also 3989.
4037. July to August 1858. Letter from the Reverend T Moore, Assistant chaplain, Allahabad. States his grievances at not having received compensation for the loss of his property at Cawnpore, his field allowance, or the 6 months Batta granted to other chaplains. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to Colonel Birch. See also 4052, 4072.
4041. July 1858. Letter from Mr J W Hayes, Editor, 'Bangalore Herald', Bangalore. Forwards a copy of the paper containing an article vindicating the Oudh Proclamation by the Governor General. Copy of reply, acknowledgment and approval.
4042. June to July 1858. Letter from Mr N P Hayes, Dublin. Forwards 3 copies of 'Waterford News' containing articles in vindication of the Governor General's policy (No longer enclosed). Copy of reply, acknowledgment and approval.
4044. July 1858. Letter from Messrs Pharoah and Company, Madras. In reply, their account is for a copy of a Madras Almanack, 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, paying the account. See also 3872.
4045. July 1858. Copy of a letter to the Head Assistant, Telegraph Office, Allahabad. Asking him to send copies of the Mail Telegrams to the Private Secretary.
4046. July 1858. Letter from Mr G E Lance, Officiating Magistrate and Collector of Etawah. Asks if Mrs Lance may go to Cawnpore. Copy of reply, permission granted.
4047. July 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Has mentioned in his letter to the Governor General his views on the Court's order about the employment of medical officers on non-professional duties, and though the Court objects to the practice, they do not absolutely prohibit it; there is no difference between Surgeons and Assistant Surgeons in this respect. Asks if the Governor General is likely to require the services of a photographer, about whom he wrote on 4 May. See also 4016, 4062, 4484.
4048. July to August 1858. Letter from Mr E De Latour, Civil and Sessions Judge of 24 Pergunnahs, Calcutta. Forwards a letter from Mr Solano, an indigo planter, about the disorganized condition of Behar and Shahabad. Ummeer Sing's cruelties at Shahabad are excessive, particularly towards those who have assisted the Government, and he is offering rewards for the heads of Government officials. Solano suggests a law be passed making the giving of aid to Government compulsory on the part of Zemindars, and holding them responsible for any damage to property. Jooher Sing intends to march on Gya, and Ummer Sing to storm the Arrah fort, and then both will march on Patna. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
4049. July 1858. Letter from Mrs K Cross, Benares. Further to her husband's wish for an appointment. See also 4033.
4050. July 1858. Letter from Pundit Ujoodhia Pershad, Extra Assistant Commissioner Oudh, Camp, Derah. Reports the victory of Rajah Mann Sing's men over the rebels; on hearing of the arrival of the British force at Durriabad, to oppose which the Nusseerabad sepoys had gone towards Shahgunge, the rebels dispersed. Future movements of the rebels. It is rumoured that a treaty has been concluded between Mann Sing and Mehudee Hussun. Certain rebels are plundering the Azimghur District. Sends list of losses in fight between the British and the rebels from Nawabgunge to Durriabad.
