Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4052 to 4099, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 41 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4001 to 4100’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4055, 4056, 4058, 4061, 4062, 4076, 4078, 4080, 4085, 4088, 4089, 4091, 4093, 4095, 4097, and 4098 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Numbers 4051, 4063, 4064, 4069, 4070, 4071, and 4100 are missing.

4053. August 1858. Letter from Mr A H Blechynden, Secretary to the Agri- and Horticultural Society, Calcutta. Returns thanks for a letter and sends receipt for the Governor General's subscription. 4056. July 1858. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow. Asks if Dr Young has been given an appointment; states that the weather is very favourable for troop movements, and he hopes Sir H Grant will be at Fyzabad or Shahgunge shortly. 4057. July to August 1858. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, 1st Bombay Grenadiers, Assistant Resident Baroda, Rajhok. Having heard that he is to be remanded to his regiment asks to be allowed to remain at his post, or to be allowed to return as soon as possible. Copy of reply, he must rejoin his regiment if ordered to by the Commander in Chief but his post at Baroda will not be filled up permanently in his absence. See also 4261.

Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Drummond, 3rd Light Cavalry, PapamowRefers to his discovery of the mineral resources of the Outer Himalayas after 25 years' work, and his disappointment at not being selected to direct the establishment of extensive iron works; asks that he may at least be relieved from the liabilities in which his labours have involved him. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Home Department. See also 3229, 4062, 4332, 4337, 4369. Miscellaneous Bundle number 380c.
4061. August 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta. Forwards a memorandum on the proposed transfer of civil officers from Bengal to the North West Provinces. Copy of earlier letter about this; note from Mr Edmonston. See also 4151, 4152.
4062. August 1858. Copy of a letter to C Beadon Esquire. Sending him a letter from Colonel Drummond; comments on the various photographers whose work Private Secretary has seen. See also 4047, 4016, 4058, 4332, 4337, 4369, 4484.
4065. July to August 1858. Letter from Mr C R Lindsay, Officiating Magistrate and Collector, Futteghur. Asks if his wife may join him. Copy of reply, the station will certainly be safe by January.
4066. July to August 1858. Letter from Captain W Paske, Assistant Commissioner 2nd class, Punjab, Hosheyarpore. Applies to be Assistant Commissioner of Simla. Copy of reply, application noted; note from Mr Edmonstone. See also 4090, 4107, 4154.
4067. July to August 1858. Letter from Mrs M D Lawrie, widow of the late J W Lawrie, English interpreter at the Court of Delhi, Calcutta. Asks for a monthly pension equal to that allowed her by the King of Delhi, which was lost owing to the Mutiny. Copy of reply, her letter has been transferred to the Secretary to the Chief Commissioner Punjab. See also 4082, 4886.
4068. July to August 1858. Letter from Captain J A Steel, 17th Native Infantry late in Military charge of the Gurkha Force, Dinapore. Asks for re-employment. Copy of reply, he is appointed Assistant Commissioner 1st class in Oudh. See also 4084; Telegraph Messages Sent number 504.
4072. August 1858. Letter from Colonel R J H Birch, Secretary to Government Military Department, Allahabad. In reply, the Reverend T Moore's letter about his allowances has been forwarded to the Officiating Secretary to Government of India, Military Department at Calcutta. 4076. August 1858. Letter from Mr H V Bayley, Civil Service Calcutta. Acknowledges the Governor General's donation to the Colvin Memorial. See also 4021.
4077. July to August 1858. Letter from the Honourable W T Lewis, Resident Councillor, Penang. Advises the despatch by steamer 'Italian' of some more mangusteens for Lady Canning, and an orchid packed inside a bamboo. Copy of reply, acknowledgment. See also 4092.
4078. July to August 1858. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Bursud. Reports receipt of Private Secretary's telegram after his departure from Gwalior; he is ready to return at once if required. Comments on shelter for the troops, and the movements of the rebels. The Rajah of Shahghur has gone to Tehree and the Banpore Rajah to Lulutpore en route for Gwalior without any escort, Mr Thornton having none to give. 4080. June 1858. Letter from Mr A F Bellasis, Collector and Magistrate of Kurrachee. With reference to the disturbed state of affairs across the Scinde border, and with reference to General Jacob's project of an establishment at Quetta to strengthen the power of the Khan of Kelut; believes there should not be any interference with the neighbouring states, but that they should be allowed to fight their own quarrels outside the British frontiers. The Southern Mahratta Country is still in an unsettled state. Wishes his application for the new Account Department to be brought forward.

4083. August 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India Home Department, Calcutta. Forwards papers about Mr Mortimer Kealy. Five enclosures. He was given a free passage to England, as he had an eccentricity amounting almost to insanity. Copy of earlier letter asking for information; copy of reply, acknowledgment. 4087. August 1858. Letter from Mr C K Dove, Officiating Post Master General of Bengal, Calcutta. Asks to be confirmed in his appointment. Copy of reply, the resignation of the Post Master General has not yet been received.
4088. July to August 1858. Letter from Captain C A Pierce, 27th Madras Native Infantry Camp, Dorundah. Encloses the results of his meteorological observations at Ranchee (no longer enclosed) with a view to the establishment of a sanatorium there, with comments. Copy of reply asking for further observations. Miscellaneous Bundle Number 400a.
4089. August 1858. Letter from Major General the Honourable Sir J Outram, Member of Council, Calcutta. Submits an account of the signally gallant conduct of Mr R L Mangles, Assistant Magistrate of Patna, in saving the life of a wounded soldier during the retreat from Arrah. He would have recommended him for the Victoria Cross, but the Honourable Court had announced that only the military were eligible. Copy of this letter. Copy of reply, acknowledgment; the information will be made known to the Home authorities. Copy of a letter from Lord Canning to the Secret Committee about this. 4090. August 1858. Copy of a letter to R Temple Esquire, Lahore. Asking for the Chief Commissioner's nomination for the post of Assistant Superintendent of Simla. See also 4066, 4107, 4154.
4091. May 1858. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Calpee. Believes that Calpee must be occupied by European troops or the rebels will return to it. No communication has been received from the Rajah of Shahghur; but he and the Rajah of Banpore have separated from Tantia Topi and the sepoys. He has instructed for Thornton to promise his life to the Banpore Rajah if he comes in. Hamilton refers to the absence in the correspondence about rewarding Scindia of any allusion to the right of adoption, which should be assured to the Hindu chiefs. Asks what is to be done with the Jaloun lady, whose surrender has been very important. Telegraph messages sent number 460.
4092. August 1858. Letter from Mr T Tomlinson, Calcutta. Reports distribution of mangosteens sent to him, and a plant. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also 4077.
4093. July to August 1858. Letter from Mr C Beadon Secretary to Government Home Department, Calcutta. States particulars of the massacre at Judda of English and French Christians including the consuls. It is likely that Commodore Watson will go to the Red Sea in expectation of orders to punish the offenders.
4094. July to August 1858. Letter from Captain D A Chase, 64th Native Infantry, Calcutta. Asks for employment. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot grant him employment; he suggests he apply to the President in Council.
4095. May 1858. Letter from Reverend F D L L Gordon, Calcutta. Asks for money and complains of his treatment in India, three letters. Two 1/2 anna stamps.
4096. August 1858. Letter from the Reverend J H Pratt, Archdeacon of Calcutta, Calcutta. Submits a minute on the state of the diocese as regards the supply of chaplains. Two other letters about this. See also 4148: Miscellaneous Bundle number 400b.
4097. 1858. Letter in the vernacular from Neebul Singh, Agra. Accusing Lolla Jolee Persad of being a traitor and furnishing supplies to the rebels. 1/2 anna stamp.
4098. August 1858. Letter from Pundit Ajoodhia Pershad, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Camp, Derah. States that when the British reached Fyzabad the rebels fled in all directions, Mahomed Hussun towards Gonda, and Mehndee Hussun towards Hussunpore. He and Mr Forbes are going to Fyzabad to see all the papers or settlements. 1/2 anna stamp. Endorsed: answered privately.
