- Scope & Content:
-
Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4151 to 4200, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 42 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4101 to 4200’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4151, 4152, 4153, 4163, 4164, 4166, 4167, 4168, 4170, 4171, 4173, 4177, 4181, 4187, and 4199 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

4153. Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Aug 1858. He is glad that Sir Hugh Rose is to have a GCB and hopes his own friends will in good time be satisfied with the notice of his (Hamilton's) services by the Governor General. He disapproves of the doings in Bundlecund, and believes that revenue collections there have been attempted too early. With Major Macpherson nervous, and General Napier energetic, there is likely to be friction. He hopes all will go smoothly, but the frequent employment of small detachments at the present season is very trying and should be avoided. Mentions the movements of Brigadier Smith and General Roberts. He is disappointed that Holkar has been neglected by the Government, and not even thanked for his eminent services, he is taunted for his loyalty to the Government by the opposition as he has gained nothing.
