Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4201 to 4250, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 43 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4201 to 4300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4201, 4203, 4204, 4205, 4211, 4213, 4215, 4219, 4220, 4221, 4224, 4225, 4226, 4228, 4229, 4230, 4231, 4234, 4239, 4244, 4245, and 4250 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.

4202. Major S R Tickell, Deputy Commissioner of the Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein, Aug 1858. Asks to be allowed to succeed Captain Hopkinson in the Commission. See also 3515, 3996
4203. Major General Sir W R Mansfield, Chief of Staff, Allahabad, Aug 1858. Asks if any arrangements have been made about the chief civil functionary of the District of Putabghur. The 1st Sikh Infantry under Major Gordon will cross the river on 28 Aug.
4204. Copy of letters from Mr L C Probyn to Mr Bax, and from Mr Bax to Mr Gubbins, Aug 1858. About the Shahabad dacoits, and as to which division Buhorunpore belongs.
4205. Mr Robert Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow, Aug-Sep 1858. Owing to the many enquiries from the friends and relatives of those who were murdered in the Mutiny, he has collected much valuable information, from which he has asked Captain Hutchinson to draw up a report with a sketch of Oudh before annexation. Asks for permission to have the report printed, before submitting it to the Governor General. Copy of reply about this. See also 4230

4209. Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India Home Department, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Reports that the President in Council has received no recommendation from Mr Plowden in favour of Lieutenant Ashburner, nor any other recommendation for the vacancy in the Nagpore Commission. 4210. Captain H Raban, Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, Alipore, Sep 1858. In reply, sends a Mr Cole of Sasseram, about Kameedoodeen and Furreedoodeen, who are unfitted to be Deputy Magistrates. Copy of earlier letter about this. See also 4l34, 4193, 4798
4211. Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Aug-Sep 1858. About the Agra road. He has offered a reward of 10,000 Rupees for Tantia Topi and the Rao Sahib, but does not think they will be caught. He is glad General Napier has got a KCB. Reports movements of Colonel Lockhart's column. Asks when Mr Anson's appointment will be filled up. The opium trade is still going.
4212. Dr J Allan FRCS, late surgeon, 34th Native Infantry, Barrackpore, Aug-Sep 1858. Asks to be Marine Surgeon at the Presidency. Copy of reply, no vacancy at present.
4213. Sir F Currie, Bart, Chairman of the Honourable Court of Directors, London, Aug-Sep 1858. Has received Lord Canning's answer to Lord Ellenborough's Proclamation Despatch. States arrangements for more reinforcements to be sent out. He has had a rather gloomy Sir John Lawrence, who had not then heard of Sir Hugh Rose's successes at Gwalior. A special Court will be held on 3 Aug to decide about the election of the seven Members of the new Council; states that the bill has passed at last.
4214. Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Kussowlee, Aug-Sep 1858. Asks to be Chief Commissioner of Oudh if Montgomery is transferred to the Punjab. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has shown this letter to the Governor General; Private Secretary does not know if Barnes would agree with the Governor General's policy for Oudh, and how far recent events would have modified Barnes' former opinions. So far there is no indication that Montgomery will be moved. Barnes' claims to succeed him are greater than all others, except perhaps those of Wingfield. See also 4219, 4273

4218. Major P A P Bouverie, 35th Native Infantry Aide de Camp to the Governor General, Allahabad, Aug-Sep 1858. With reference to the submission of his name to the Governor General to accompany the Maharajah of Putteala to England, hopes that this temporary duty will not prevent his being appointed to some permanent office, and applies for the Political Agency at Bhopal. 4225. Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Aug-Sep 1858. Suggests Mr Bartie to superintend the transport train from Indore to Agra. 30 casks of rum are being sent to Brigadier Smith's column. Encloses a Mr Bartie. Note about the Goonah transport train.
4226. Pundit Ajoodhia Persaud, Extra Assistant, Fyzabad, Aug-Sep 1858. Sends lists (with comments) of jungles, forts, and Headquarters of the Talukdars of Pertabgurh (in the vernacular, with comments or translations by the Private Secretary in English). Reports the progress of Brigadier Grant's column. He has been appointed by Mr Forbes to make settlement arrangements among the Talukdars and Zemindars for their 'Ellaquas'.

4229. Mrs E J Burton, Neemuch, Aug-Sep 1858. Returns thanks for the appointments of Extra Assistants for her two youngest sons. Asks for her eldest son to be appointed to an Irregular Cavalry Corps in the Bengal Presidency. Copy of reply, her eldest son's case was referred to the Court of directors, and a reply is awaited.

4243. Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Has sent the Gwalior map, and the Rajputana map will follow when ready, in about two months. Copy of earlier letter asking for Gwalior map.
4244. Sir Robert Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Aug 1858. Reports particulars of the occupation of Patun by the rebels; the Rajah is said to have succumbed, and the rebels intend to plunder the town and go on to Kota. He hopes Colonel Lockhart will move towards Patun, though he is not strong enough to attack the town. Hamilton believes there is some understanding between Tantia Topi and the Patun Mohommedans. Brigadier Smith should be coming south after Mann Sing.
4245. Major General the Honourable Sir James Outram GCB, Member of Council, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Forwards a Mrs Harris asking for mitigation of the sentence passed on her son, with draft of his reply, and asks to be informed of the Governor General's decision. Copy of reply, he will be informed.
