Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4251 to 4299, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 43 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4201 to 4300’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4252, 4253, 4258, 4260, 4262, 4267, 4268, 4269, 4272, 4273, 4281, 4283, 4290, 4291, 4292, and 4296 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’. Number 4300 is missing.

4252. Letter from Captain H Yule, Officiating Secretary to the Government of India, Public Works Department, Allahabad, Aug - Sep 1858. About the payment of rent for the house occupied by the Commander in Chief.
4253. Letter from Mr O Toogood, Officiating Magistrate of Monghyr, Aug - Sep 1858. Submits copy of his appeal about his curtailed leave, and travelling expenses. Covering letter only. Copy of reply, the matter will be considered officially. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4305, 4472.

4256. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H M Durand, on special duty with the Governor General, Allahabad, Sep 1858. Wishes for a political appointment, the Agency of Rajputana or Central India, or the Chief Commissionership in Oudh or the Punjab. Two letters. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
4257. Letter from Lord H Ulick Browne, Magistrate of Hoogly, Sep 1858. Applies to be Post Master of Bengal. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
4258. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Sep 1858. Reports the movements of the 2nd column. The Maharana of Patun has fled to Lohait. Suggests measures to be taken against the rebels, and the formation of a Camel Corps. Now that the Company's days are over, and the political officers are Her Majesty's servants, suggests the Governor General issue a circular on uniform, for the political officers wear Company's buttons.
4259. Letter from Captain J C Brooke, Officiating Deputy Commissioner, Ajmere, Aug - Sep 1858. Asks to be Political Agent for Marwar and Seonee, with testimonials (Copies). See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4231.
4260. Copy of a letter to C Beadon Esquire, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Confirming a telegraph sent him by the Private Secretary asking for 10,000 rockets. They are to be used in a fireworks display at Allahabad to inaugurate the new regime. Telegraph messages sent number 519; Telegraph messages received number 883, 884.
4261. Letter from Lieutenant L C Barton, 1st Grenadiers, Bombay Native Infantry, Rajkote, Aug - Sep 1858. Regrets his remand to his regiment without any explanation being given in the Gazette, and his disappointment in his political career. Copy of reply. 4262. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to Chief Commissioner, Lahore, Sep 1858. In reply, will obtain the shawls for Lady Canning. All is well in the Punjab, nothing has happened since the Dera Ishmail Khan affair. Copy of earlier letter asking Temple to find some Cashmere shawls for Lady Canning. 4264. Letter from Lieutenant H S Hill, 48th Madras Native Infantry, Officiating Assistant Commissioner Tenasserim and Martaban Provinces, Moulmein, Aug - Sep 1858. Asks to be Deputy Commissioner in the Tenasserim Provinces. Copy of reply, application noted.
4265. Letter from Lieutenant T C Alban, 8th Bengal Native Infantry, Deputy Judge Advocate General, Rajputana Field Force, Nusserabad, Sep 1858. Asks to be appointed Assistant Resident at Baroda. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, there is no permanent vacancy. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 727, 1079.
4267. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Sep 1858. States he has written officially about the Agra and Bombay road, and also about raising infantry and cavalry. Recommends Colonel Becher and Lieutenant Steward for raising cavalry, and Lieutenant Dickens and Lieutenant Edwards for the infantry. The rebels left Patun and are on the march again (Cover only). Endorsed: transferred to Colonel Stuart, Military Secretary.
4268. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Sep 1858. Forwards two letters from General Napier and Captain Meade. Napier reports the attempt to corrupt the 25th; doubts whether Major Macpherson's reason for not clearing the Lushkur is sound, and despairs of success whilst the Agency is in such hands. The Bombay Commissariat is wretched. Captain Meade reports the trial of Scindia's disarmed men. Hamilton expresses his opinion on the importance of passing sentence on these men.
4269. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Indore, Sep 1858. Forwards extract of a letter from Lieutenant Shakespear, reporting the unpleasant state of affairs at Gwalior by reason of the capture of the leading Pundits in trying to corrupt the 25th. 80 ringleaders are known, and were to have been seized, but Major Macpherson got nervous. The Maharajah talks of going into cantonments. The two ex-Rajahs of Banpore and Shahgurh had arrived at Morar and would start for Agra on 5 Sep.

4271. Letter from Mr E S Pearson, Officiating Civil and Sessions Judge of Mymensing, Sep 1858. Asks when the restrictions on leave will be removed. Copy of reply, the Governor General cannot say, but restrictions are unlikely to be removed by 1 Jan 1859.
4272. Letter from Major H Bruce, Superintendent of Police in Oudh, Lucknow, Sep 1858. Reports unfavourably on Gomundah Sing who has been dismissed. Golab Sing is a well-behaved young man, he does not like any interference with his corps. What is his salary to be?
4273. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Simla, Sep 1858, Further to his application to be Chief Commissioner in Oudh, he would do his best to carry out the policy already initiated, whatever his own views might be. Affirms that his claims are superior to those of Mr Wingfield. If he is not successful in his application for Oudh, wishes to be considered for the Foreign Secretaryship. 4275. Letter from Mr D A Gantzer, Accountant in the office of Superintendent of Embankments, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Asks if two copies of his guide to the Public Works Department have been received. Copy of reply, the parcel has arrived. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4309.
4276. Letter from Mr C Sharp, Superintendent of the Barrackpore Park, Sep 1858. Reports on the Park; a party of recruits in pursuit of a jackal startled the deer, and two deer are now missing. The new fence is quite useless.
4279. Letter from Lieutenant T C Alban, 8th Bombay Native Infantry, Deputy Judge Advocate General, Rajputana field force, Nusseerabad, Sep 1858. Asks to be Political Agent at Joudpore. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
4280. Letter from Mr N C Biale, Assistant in the firm of A Stevens and Company, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Asks for employment under the Government. Copy of reply, refused.
4281. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General for Central India, Indore, Sep 1858. Recommends Captain Griffin, 3rd Madras Europeans, for the command of any Police Corps in Malwa. The rebels are still at Sohait. Troops are needed by the British, they have no artillery whatever. The ex-Rajahs of Shahgurh and Banpore had to be taken back to Morar, because of an alarm, and their followers disarmed and separated; this was a measure he had ordered, but which Major Macpherson was afraid to carry out.
4282. Letter from Mr John S A H Byrne, Allahabad, Sep 1858. Submits a printed copy of his credentials, and wishes to be appointed to the Military Police. Copy of reply, he has applied to the wrong Department.
4283. Letter from Dr A Duff DD, Calcutta, Sep - Nov 1858. Forwards a copy of the resolutions passed at a meeting of Christian ministers and gentlemen of Calcutta, at which he presided. They are concerned with the importance of Christianity in the new Government of India. Copy of reply, 2 Nov, the new proclamation has now been promulgated. Note about this.
4285. Letter from Mr B P Singer, Extra Assistant Nagpore, Bhundarah, Sep 1858. About his privilege leave and promotion. Copy of reply, the Governor General will not alter his decision. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 3908, 3971, 1019, 4183, 4235, 4386.
4288. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Recommends Lieutenant R J Grant and Lieutenant P Thompson for the Revenue Survey Department and mentions vacancies. 4291. Letter from Sir J Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Murree, Sep 1858. Replies about Lieutenant Wheeler's qualifications for a Cantonment Magistracy. His doctors (Lawrence's) have recommended change and a rest for him, failing which he may have a stroke of paralysis; he does not know what arrangements to propose for his absence; he will go, if he can do so with honour, and otherwise will stay and take his chance. Suggests that the Punjab be made into a Lieutenant Governorship with the usual staff. Encloses a letter about Lieutenant Wheeler. Copy of earlier letter asking for information about Wheeler; draft of this letter.
4292. Letter from Mr A St J Carruthers, Attorney at law, Allahabad, Sep 1858. Forwards a memorial from his client, Ramrikh, asking for a reward, or at least due consideration, for his services during the mutiny at Allahabad. Copies of two replies, to Carruthers and to Ramrikh. 4296. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling, Sep 1858. Sends a copy of his letter to the Officiating Resident in Nepal, Captain Byers, about rumours of preparations being made at Kathmandu for a hostile demonstration by Jung Bahadoor against Darjeeling, and the British territories from the Nepal Terai to the Ganges, because of his disappointment at his reward for his late services. Mentions Pursad Sing Thapa's mission in connection with the above subject; asks for any information or news from Nepal which may be in the Private Secretary's possession; has made the same request to the Lieutenant Governor.
