Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4301 to 4349, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 44 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4301 to 4400’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4304, 4305, 4306, 4311, 4312, 4320, 4324, 4329, 4332, 4333, 4334, 4337, 4341, 4345 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4301. Letter from Mr A G Campagnac, Allahabad, Sep 1858. Further to his claim for compensation. Note to Mr Muir; copy of reply, he has been granted 500 Rupees which he will receive through the proper channel.
4302. Letter from Captain R G Mayne, Commanding 3rd Irregular Cavalry, Saugor, Sep - Oct 1858. Replies about Lieutenant Cory. Copy of earlier letter asking for information. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4270, 4297, 4316, 4338.
4303. Letter from The Reverend W W Phelps, Officiating Junior Chaplain, St John's Church, Calcutta, Sep 1858. Asks for aid for the Seamen's Mission. Copy of reply, sending 100 Rupees. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 1159, 1166, 2626, 4343, 7230.
4304. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Sep 1858. Reports on the rebels' movements, and the slowness of the British force. Troops are much needed at Indore.
4305. Letter from Mr O Toogood, Officiating Magistrate of Monghyr, Sep 1858. About the non-payment of his passage money. Copy of reply about this. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4253, 4472.
4306. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Sep 1858. Sends news of a successful attack by General Michel on the rebels near Biora; future movements of General Michel. The trophy guns have arrived at Indore to the delight of all. 1 enclosure.
4309. Letter from Mr D A Gantzer, Accountant in the office of the Superintendent of Embankment, Sep 1858. Sends a copy of an earlier letter, and asks for employment. Copy of reply, his letter and his guide to the Public Works Department have been received. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4275.
4310. Letter from Mr F R Cockerell, Officiating Collector of Nuddea, Kishnagur, Sep 1858. Applies to be Post Master General of Bengal. Copy of reply, he is unlikely to be appointed.
4311. Letter from Mr B W Bird, Civil Service, Secretary to the Neilgherry (Ootacamund) Lawrence Asylum, Sep - Nov 1858. Forwards printed Memorandum and subscription list of the Asylum, established in memory of Sir H Lawrence, open to children of all religious denominations. Copy of reply, the Governor General will donate 5,000 Rupees.
4312. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary, to the Chief Commissioner Punjab, Camp, near Rawalpindi, Oct 1858. Will obtain the cashmere shawls for Lady Canning. 2 anna stamp. Copies of 2 earlier letters about these; 2 other letters. See also Private secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4262, 4572, 5749, 5804, 5813.
4313. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to Chief Commissioner Punjab, Lahore, Sep 1858. Recommends Lieutenant Tillard of the Bengal Artillery for an Assistant Commissionership in the Punjab. Note from Mr Simson about the number of Commissioners. Copy of reply, as Tillard is an Artillery officer it will be difficult to take him from regimental duty. The Punjab Commission already has 7 Assistants above the complement, and the Governor General would be glad to know how this has happened. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4415, 4476.
4314. Copy of a letter to the Editor of the 'Delhi Gazette', Agra, Sep 1858. The Private Secretary wishes to subscribe to the tri-weekly issue.
4315. Letter from Mr A G Campagnac, Allahabad, Sep 1858. Complains that he has not yet received his compensation money. Endorsed: told to apply to Mr Muir. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4301.
4316. Letter from Lieutenant A Cory, 3rd Irregular Cavalry, Allahabad, Sep 1858. In reply, will leave Allahabad as requested, and gives Saugor as his future address. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4270, 4297, 4302, 4338.
4317. Letter from Mr T Tomlinson, Government House, Calcutta, Oct 1858. Acknowledges receipt of a box of manuscripts addressed to the Honourable G C Talbot, which has been shipped on the 'Alma'. Copies of 2 earlier letters sending the box, from Lady Canning to Mr Talbot, India Board.
4318. Note, Sep 1858, to mark in the Register that numbers 4249, 4294, 4307, 4318 have been transferred to Mr Muir, that is, all the letters referring to Mrs Buck.
4319. Letter from Mr J Da Costa, Allahabad, Sep 1858. Asks for justice, money, employment, and free passage to Calcutta for himself and family, on one of the Government Steamers.
4320. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling, Sep 1858. Encloses a copy of his letter to the Officiating Resident at Nepal, stating that he has heard of the arrival at Kathmandu of some mutineer sepoys, and of a rebel Rajah from the North West, for the purpose of inciting Jung Bahadoor, who had neither refused nor promised help against the British Government, but was preparing for a military expedition. Jung Bahadoor has lately refused to see the Officiating Resident on business. Campbell asks for further information, and explanation of the above news, from the Private Secretary. Asks that the practice of furnishing him with weekly diaries of the Nepal Residency may be revived for 1 year at least. 4325. Letter from Mr M Kealy, Telegraph Department Bombay, Sep 1858. Regrets that he has been condemned unheard, and considered unfit for further employment; his case is in a lawyer's hands but he will not proceed until he has an answer from the Governor General. 4329. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Sep 1858. Reports that among the killed at Rajghur, a sepoy was found in uniform with the button of the 1st Punjab Infantry, which surprised Hamilton as he did not know such buttons were served out by the clothing agents to other contingents and the Punjab Infantry were, he thought, loyal. Reports movements of the rebels. A man named Seelaren has raised rebellion on the Bheel side. There is much sickness in Hamilton's camp, and the rains are very heavy.
4332. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Drummond, 3rd Light Cavalry, Allahabad, Oct 1858. Asks for a reply to his letter about his claims in connection with the establishment of Iron works in the Himalayas. Copy of reply, Private Secretary is making enquiries. 4333. Letter from Mr R H Madocks, Civil Service Buxar, Sep - Oct 1858. Having being appointed to Gya, he can no longer send news items unless the rebels move towards his station. Brigadier Douglas' movement against the rebels has been deferred owing to the heavy rain. The rebels are on the Arrah road, and have broken 3 bridges and constructed some wooden guns with the aid of the Nepalese spy.
4334. Letter from Lieutenant General Sir James Outram Bart G C B, Calcutta, Sep - Oct 1858. Has submitted to the Adjutant General the names of such military officers of his staff as are entitled to the Lucknow medal. There were also civil officers on his staff, and submits the names of W J Money and G Couper for the medal, and also 3 and 2 bars respectively. Asks for a CB for Mr Couper for his services. Copy of reply, the Governor General will consider his suggestions.

Has the papers about Colonel Drummond's case, and is waiting for Colonel Drummond's memorial. Copy of earlier letter about this. 4341. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's agent for Central India, Indore, Sep - Oct 1858. Reported the movements of the rebels. Seelaram has renewed hostilities. Has replied to London about the delay in sending up the railway scheme, that the surveys were submitted to him by the Government in Feb 1856. The surveyor of the Great Indian Railway Company has arrived to lay out an extension from Asseerghur to Indore. Wishes his pension to be granted from 1 May, though he would not apply for it before 1 Nov as such an announcement would be prejudicial in Malwa. Copy of reply, about his pension.
4342. Letter from Mr N Panioty, Officiating Head Clerk in the Private Secretary's Office, Allahabad, Oct 1858. Asks to be confirmed in his present post, where he has acted for nearly 3 months. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary has no objection.

4345. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel C M Maclean, Commanding 43rd Madras Native Infantry, Russelcondah, Sep - Oct 1858. Remarks on the inconvenience to himself and others in the Army who are constantly on the move, by the imposition of an extra forward postage, and asks this levy (already remitted to officers and soldiers on Field Service) may be remitted to every officer and soldier in India. Copy of reply, refused; explanation.
