Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4401 to 4450, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 45 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4401 to 4500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4402, 4408, 4412, 4414, 4416, 4419, 4421, 4424, 4425, 4426, 4427, 4428, 4431, 4432, 4434, 4439, 4441, 4443, 4445, 4446, and 4449 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4401. Letter from Major G Verner, 9th Bengal Native Infantry Officiating Commissioner of Arracan, Akyab, Oct 1858. Asks to be confirmed in his present appointment. 9 Oct. Copy of reply, he will receive an answer through the Government of Bengal.
4402. Letter from Mr G J C Barnes, Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Umballah, Oct 1858. Further to his application to be Chief Commissioner of Oudh. He believes Mr Montgomery should succeed Sir J Lawrence in the Punjab. Encloses 2 letters, from Sir John Lawrence and Montgomery. If he is not appointed to Oudh, trusts that his claims for the Foreign Secretaryship will be noted. He has just (15 Oct) received a definite application from Pattialah (for his visit to England) detailing arrangements the Maharajah wishes to make for his absence. The Maharajah wishes to be accompanied to England by Major R Lawrence, in place of Major Bouverie. Barnes reports that Lord W Hay does not exert himself as much as he should, and is therefore unpopular; nothing else is known against him. Copy of reply, the Private Secretary advises him to write no more on the subject of Oudh, he had pressed his claims too much, and the Governor General had expressed some surprise at his forwarding John Lawrence's letter. Pattialah's affairs must be put on a formal footing, he should address the Government of India. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4367, 4424, 4425.

4413. Letter from Mr C W West, Inspecting Post Master, Camp, Cannanore, Oct 1858. Sends copy of a letter from the Post Master General of Madras (no longer enclosed) informing West that he is to be pensioned off, for writing letters to the Governor General and Private Secretary. Asks for mercy; and promises never to write again. 1/2 anna stamp
4414. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General, Indore, Oct 1858. Sends copy of a letter from General Michel, stating that his plan of operation was marred by the absence of Captain Mayne's Cavalry. Sends an extract from a letter from Brigadier Wheler, regrets that the salt duty which is such a burden to the agricultural classes in Bundelcund has not been remitted, and the old Jumna line reverted to. Wishes the Governor General to send Mead's Horse to Goonah and employ Mayne elsewhere. Hamilton would like to have an interview with the Governor General, but it seems impossible.
4415. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner, Punjab, Attock, Oct 1858. In reply, about vacancies in the Punjab Commission. Note from Colonel Birch. 4418. Letter from Mr Cecil Beadon, Secretary to Government of India, Home Department, Calcutta, Oct 1858. Sends a copy of a letter from the Secretary to the Government of Bengal applying for the services of a qualified Military officer as Assistant Revenue Surveyor. 4419. Letter from Major G R Edwards, 2nd Madras Cavalry, Sholapore, Oct - Nov 1858. Reports that Major Sleeman is about to go to England on medical certificate, and asks to be allowed to officiate as Superintendent of Thuggee during Sleeman's absence. Note from Mr Edmonstone. Printed testimonials of Edwards. Copy of reply, the Governor General has much pleasure in appointing him. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 3028, 3296, 3382, 3512, 4470.
4420. Letter from Mr Edward Waterfield, Civil Service Allahabad, Oct 1858, Asks to be transferred to Oudh. Copy of reply, refused.
4421. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Oct 1858. Reports an action fought between General Michel and the rebels, the details of which are not known. Sends a note from Mr Thornton reporting his movements. Hamilton omitted in the return for medals he sent in the name of Mr Thornton, who well deserves one. Suggests the best method of bringing in the Thakoors instead of employing informers and Cutcherry people. Adds that Tehree has stood out manfully, but many of the officers still say the state is ill-disposed.
4422. Letter from Mr G F Edmonstone, Secretary to the Government of India with the Governor General Allahabad, Oct 1858. Asks for the return to the Foreign Office of documents connected with Lieutenant Raverty's case. List enclosed.
4423. Letter from Dr James Fairweather, Assistant Surgeon, 4th Punjab Infantry, Rawalpindi, Oct - Nov 1858. Asks to be Assistant to the Opium Agent of Behar. Copies of testimonials. Copy of reply, he should apply to the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.
4424. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner of Cis Sutlej States, Umballa, Oct 1858. Regrets that he pressed his claims to be Chief Commissioner of Oudh too much; submits explanation. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4402.
4425. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner of Cis Sutlej States, Umballa, Oct 1858. In reply, has sent an official letter with full details of all the arrangements proposed for the Patealla Rajah's visit to England and for the administration of his territories during his absence. No date has yet been fixed. The Rajah will leave his son as Regent, with a Council of 3 ministers. He would like a Bombay steamer, and expects to obtain funds from the public treasuries in India and in England to the amount of his claims upon the Government. 4426. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent, Central India, Indore, Oct 1858. Trusts the Governor General will approve of General Michel's overthrow of the enemy. All are disappointed by the extraordinary delay in Sir H Rose's Gwalior despatch; hopes that medals or clasps are to be given to the Central India Field Force. The Agra road is guarded. 121 camels are coming from Nusseerabad. Some leather water bags have been ordered to be made at Bhopal.
4427. Letter from Sir Robert Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Oct - Nov 1858. States that his letter to Mr Edmonstone of 6 Oct contains an account of the Ranee's case, and that Mr Thornton's letter number 59, copy of which was sent to Edmonstone, alludes to the widows. Encloses copies of some vernacular papers on the subject. General Napier in a telegram gave the treatment of the ex-Rajahs as an alleged cause of discontent in Lullutpore; the ex-Rajahs had not left Gwalior when the widows were interfered with.
4428. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Indore, Oct 1858. To Dr Leckie, asks Leckie to explain his wish to retire on pension to the Governor General as he does not wish to be thought to be shirking from work. Encloses a note from his medical adviser.
4429. Letter from Captain F T Wroughton, 8th Native Infantry, Darjeeling, Sep 1858. Wishes to know the Governor General's intentions for his future.
4430. Letter from Lieutenant G Adey, 2nd in command, 4th Hyderabad Infantry, Shorapore, Nov 1858. With reference to his application to be 2nd Assistant to the Resident at Hyderabad, states his services. Copy of reply, the Governor General has made other arrangements for this post. 4431. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Indore, Oct - Nov 1858. Reports the movements of British forces, and encloses a memorandum showing the position and strength of the enemy, and the resolutions passed by them to fight the English at any cost.
4432. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Indore, Oct - Nov 1858. Sends details of an action in which the rebels were defeated, Adil Mohomed was severely wounded. He is surprised that the enemy are south of the British Army; the Thakoor of Jaklone is a notorious trouble-maker. 1 enclosure.
4433. Letter from Dr A C C De Renzy, Assistant Surgeon in Joint Medical Charge of Simla, Oct - Nov 1858. Asks to be Civil Surgeon of Lahore. Copy of reply, acknowledgment.
4434. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling, Sep 1858. Submits copy of his letter to the Officiating Resident in Nepal, reporting the growth of reports of hostile feeling of the Durbar towards the British Government The Durbar has recalled all the Nepalese subjects employed in Darjeeling on pain of being treated as enemies on the coming invasion of the place: about 1,000 men have left. It is reported that the force at Ilamgurhy is to be increased; the Durbar has proclaimed an amnesty for all Nepalese fugitives from justice, including runaway slaves. Exportations of rice have been stopped. Sends also a copy of his letter to the Private Secretary of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. he doubts the accuracy of these reports, but they should be thoroughly sifted; asks for the Governor General's views and orders. 4441. Letter from Pundit Ajoodhia Pershad, Extra Assistant, Fyzabad, Nov 1858. Sends a plan of the forts and jungles in the Fyzabad District. Reports the movements of the rebels in Oudh, and the results of various actions. Hopes that the bridge of boats at Fyzabad will soon be ready. The Royal Proclamation was read in Fyzabad, and a great illumination was made in the city, and the people are very glad at the Queen's assumption of the Government of India. Copy of reply, acknowledgment, and comments on the Proclamation.
4442. Letter from Brigadier General G St P Lawrence, Officiating Agent to the Governor General, Rajputana, Oct - Nov 1858. Forwards for favourable consideration a letter from Dr Lownds, asking to be made Surgeon to the Rajpootana Agency. Copy of reply about this. 4443. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Oct - Nov 1858. Expresses surprise at the rebels turning up at Bagrode, Major Rickards who is at Sehore is very uncommunicative. Sends a letter from General Michel (copy enclosed) about the inefficiency of his staff, and the uselessness of his cavalry. A lot of enemy horsemen from Julra Patun side are appearing in Scindia's Luthahul Districts Also office memorandum.
4444. Letter from Mr E P Moore, late Her Majesty's 53rd Regiment, Calcutta, Nov 1858. Asks for employment either in Oudh or in any other part of India. Copy of reply, refused. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4454.
4445. Letter from Major General Sir W R Mansfield, Chief of the Staff, Allahabad, Sep 1858. Recommends Lieutenant Acton who wishes to serve in the Oudh Commission, sends a letter from Mr Edmonstone to Lieutenant Acton.
4446. Letter from Mr G C Barnes, Commissioner Cis Sutlej States, Kussowlee, Aug - Nov 1858. Reports that the Rajah of Puttialah is very anxious to go to England, not because of any grievance, but from a wish to see foreign countries. Sir John Lawrence was very disappointed at not receiving honours from home, and at not being made a Lieutenant Governor when Delhi was placed under his command; he intends going home in Jan, his health and spirits having suffered a great deal. Colonel Edwardes also goes home in Nov to write the life of Sir Henry. He does not believe Sir John will return to the Punjab, who will succeed him? Gives his own opinion on Montgomery, Edmonstone, Reade and Sir Robert Hamilton. See also Private secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4367, 4402, 4425.
