Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4452 to 4500, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 45 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4401 to 4500’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4453, 4460, 4461, 4463, 4467, 4472, 4475, 4476, 4478, 4481, 4482, 4483, 4485, 4487, 4488, 4490, 4492, 4493, 4495, and 4497 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4452. Letter from Mr A Money, Magistrate and Collector of Shahabad, Arrah, Nov 1858. Asks if ladies may now return to Arrah. Copy of reply, permission granted.
4453. Letter from Lieutenant General Sir M Cubbon, Commissioner of Mysore, Bangalore, Oct - Nov 1858. Recommends Mr R C Dobbs to be Executive Engineer in Mysore; there is a great deal of work for the Public Works Department to repair the damage done by heavy rain after a long season of drought. Public feeling is still in an unsettled state in the South of India, and will continue to be so, until the Nana is captured. A Brahmin had refused to obey the summons of the district authority, saying that the British authority would be over in a month, and that the Nana would be in their place. Copy of reply, Dobbs is appointed. Private Secretary is afraid that the passing of the Nerbudda by Tantia Topi may give rise to evil reports in the Deccan. Madhoo Singh of Umethee has surrendered in Oudh. It is thought that the Proclamation will do much good. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4362.

4458. Copy of a letter to Mr W H Hampton, Superintendent of the State Yacht Establishment, Nov 1858. Informing him of a request made by the Serang of the 'Soonamookee' about the huts for the yacht's crew.
4459. Letter from Mr W Glynn, Deputy Collector and Deputy Magistrate, 1st class, Futtehpore, Nov 1858. Reapplies to be made Assistant Commissioner 2nd class in Oudh. 4460. Letter from Mr T Weber, Band Master, 43rd Madras Native Infantry, Russellkondah, Oct - Dec 1858. Asks for news about Mr A Schlotthauer, Band Master, 28th Bengal Native Infantry at Shahjehanpore. Copy of reply, sending information from the Magistrate of Shahjehanpore. 4466. Letter from Lord William Hay, Deputy Commissioner, Simla, Nov 1858. About shawls for Lady Canning. Asks when the changes and promotions are to take place, and hopes that the Governor General will not make the mistake of sending Mr Barnes to Oudh as Chief Commissioner. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4412, 4463.
4467. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Nov 1858. Reports the reading of the Proclamation at Indore with illuminations and fireworks. Great dissatisfaction is prevailing owing to the delay of Sir Hugh Rose's despatches; is glad to see Brigadier Smith's despatches. He has received a letter from Sir George Clerk, who with others is settled into his place and believes they will all retain their seats, as Lord Stanley will be in the next Ministry. General Michel is expected to cross the Nerbudda on 8 Nov or 7 Nov. Lieutenant Kerr is in close pursuit of the rebels. Hamilton hopes to send 100 camels to the General. The Banda Nabob now wishes to come in, and his submission will be a great gain; the Bareilly Nawab has separated from the others and not crossed the Nerbudda. The Proclamation will do good.

4470. Letter from Major J Sleeman, General Superintendent of Thuggee and Dacoity, Jubbulpore, Oct 1858. Asks for Major Edwards to be nominated to officiate for him, and also to be appointed as Officiating Assistant - See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 3028, 3296, 3382, 3512, 4419.
4471. Letter from Captain E P Lloyd, 2nd in command, Kamroop Regiment and Officiating Junior Assistant Commissioner Assam, Gowhatty, Nov 1858. Explains his earlier letter, he wishes to be considered for better employment in future. Copy of reply, application noted. 4475. Letter from Major W W Davidson, Commanding 10th Irregular Cavalry, Camp, Googaira, Nov 1858. Would be pleased if he could communicate the Governor General's acknowledgment of their services to Lieutenant Randall and Dr Campbell, who are favourably mentioned in the annexed papers. 2 enclosures. Note about this.
4476. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary, to the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Camp, near Rawalpindi, Nov 1858. In reply about the insinuations against Lord William Hay; and about Dr Thornton. Sir J Lawrence is anxious to know about his successor. Is anything to be done for Lieutenant Tillard of the Artillery. Note to General Birch, and his reply. Copy of reply to Temple about Lieutenant Tillard. The question of employment of officers of Queen's regiments in civil posts dees not seem to be properly settled yet. 4481. Letter from Dr A Campbell, Superintendent of Darjeeling, Nov 1858. Reports the receipt of Captain Eyer's letter of 25 Oct to Mr Edmonstone, and states that though the amended proclamations have somewhat assured the Sappers in the Government service, there is no improvement as regards the return of the runaway coolies or the import of supplies; if this continues the Nepal Government will have effectually interfered to delay the progress and prosperity of Darjeeling. 4485. Letter from Mr Cecil Beadon, Secretary to Government of India, Home Department Calcutta, Nov 1858. Returns thanks for Lord Canning's kindness in sending him the leader containing a paragraph about Beadon's son Richard; and states that he has since won fresh laurels under Sir H Havelock. Copy of earlier letter, sending him the leader.
4486. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow, Nov 1858. Proposes Captain Eawes, Divisional Commandant of the Oudh Military Police, as a Deputy Commissioner 3rd class; with a memorandum on his services. Copy of reply, there is no vacancy at present. 4487. Letter from Brigadier General R Napier, Commanding Field Force, Gwalior, Nov 1858. Thanks the Private Secretary for his kindness to Napier's nephew. Napier asks for the Rajputana Agency, or any other Military Political appointment. He is disappointed at Sir H Rose's obstinate determination not to send in any despatches regarding the recapture of Gwalior. Asks if the Governor General will go to Gwalior this year. Copy of reply, the Governor General hopes soon to settle the matter of his military pay, which would be more satisfactory than removing him to the political line.
4488. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Nov 1858. Has read the Governor General's crushing reply to Lord Ellenborough's despatch, and trusts that the matter will not be left alone when Parliament meets. He has every hope of Lord Stanley being in the next administration, which would be fortunate for India. He hopes that the Queen will now mark her sense of her Viceroy's merits. General Michel is on the march again, with camels. Michel has expressed his entire approval of Hamilton's military foresight, and Hamilton has been asked by Bombay to direct the movements of sundry columns, which he will do until Sir H Rose comes to the frontier. Is dissatisfied at Sir H Rose's not sending in his despatches. The celebrations over the Proclamation in Indore ended with a party given by him to some 200 native guests. Mentions the good services of Holkar's and Scindia's troops.
4489. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Nov 1858. Reports that the rebels were too late and Colonel Beecher was just in time at Baitool. Suggests that as the Punjab is to be a Lieutenant Governorship, the Punjab code be substituted for those odious regulations in the North West Provinces. Regrets that the salt tax is continued in Bundlecund, and states that Tantia hangs the Government officials wherever he can find them. He doubts whether the Ministry will last a session. Lord Stanley is quite opposed to the old policy of annexation.
4490. Letter from Mr E A Reade, Member of the Sudder Board of Revenue, North West Provinces, Agra, Nov 1858. Forwards a memorandum on the police with a note on inferior castes (no longer enclosed). Copy of reply, asking for further copies of the pamphlet.
4491. Letter from Mr W T Moore, Berhampore, Nov - Dec 1858. Asks to be appointed Deputy Collector. Note about Moore; copy of reply, there is no appointment for him. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4360.
4492. Letter from Luigi Bonomi, from Viddin on the Danube, Sep - Nov 1858. Was about to journey to the East, but his property was stolen; asks for money for the journey from the Governor General. Letter in Italian. Note about this letter.

4495. Letter from Sir H Hamilton, Governor General's Agent for Central India, Indore, Nov 1858. States that Major Rickards is reported to have applied for home leave, he will be no loss. Encloses a note from General Michel. The Force really deserves a reward in coin to pay their expenses. Suggests that Major Ellis be transferred from Bundlecund to Bhopal and Captain Helbert put in his place. Governor General's Book number 1376.
