Contains docketed sets of papers, numbered 4551 to 4600, consisting of correspondence, relating to applications for posts and other matters. These papers were originally included in one bundle of one hundred docketed sets of papers, labelled ‘No. 46 Private Secretary’s Correspondence, Nos. 4501 to 4600’. Each numbered set of papers usually consists of an original letter sent to the Private Secretary to the Governor General, or to the Governor General, a copy of the reply from the Private Secretary, Lewin Bentham Bowring, and any other papers. In addition, for each set of papers, either on the back of the original letter, or on a separate sheet of paper, is written the number of the set of papers, the year, the name of the writer of the original letter, the official position and location of the sender, the date the letter was despatched, the date it was received, the date it was answered, any cross references to other papers, and a brief summary of the letter. Numbers 4552, 4558, 4562, 4567, 4571, 4572, 4573, 4576, 4579, 4580, 4581, 4583, 4586, 4588, 4589, 4596, 4597 have a red cross on them, to indicate that they ‘may be preserved’, whilst ‘the rest may be destroyed’.
4551. Letter from Mr E W Bird, Secretary Ootacamund, Lawrence Asylum, Nov - Dec 1858. Returns thanks for the Governor General's subscription, sends subscription list, several children of soldiers have already been admitted. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4311, 4766.
4552. Letter from Mr S Lushington, Assistant with the powers of Joint Magistrate and Deputy Collector, Goruckpore, Dec 1858. Complains that the post of 2nd class Assistant in Oudh is a lower grade post than the one he now holds. Copies of 2 other letters about this.
4553. Letter from Mr R T Spencer, Agra, Nov - Dec 1858. Asks for employment under the Government; his father, who commanded the 26th Light Infantry, was murdered by the men of his corps at Mecan Meer. Covering note from Mr Edmonstone. 4556. Letter from Captain C Thornton, Madras Artillery, Secunderabad, Nov - Dec 1858. Asks to be given the command of a Contingent Battery, or to be made 2nd Assistant to the Resident at Hyderabad. 1/2 anna stamp. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4618, 4772, 6478.
4557. Letter from Major E K Elliot, Deputy Commissioner Seetabuldee, Nagpur, Dec 1858. Further to his application, sends copy of a letter from the Commissioner of Nagpur. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4526
4558. Memorandum by Mr J C Wilson, Special Commissioner, Dec 1858. Reporting that Buldeo Sing Subadar started for Cawnpore on his way home, and will be back at Allahabad by Saturday with information for the Governor General. Asks if the plan suggested for putting fresh blood into the Indian Studs will be adopted.
4559. Letter from Mr W Boate, Allahabad, Dec 1858. Applies to be an Extra Assistant Commissioner. Note from Mr Edmonstone. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4566.
4561. Letter from Captain W C Clifton, late 67th regiment in charge of invalids, Cawnpore, Dec 1858. Asks for employment. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4611.
4562. Letter from Captain H D Abbott, Commanding Cavalry Detachment, Field Force, Hyderabad Contingent, Sindwah, Nov - Dec 1858. Hopes his former letter reached the Private Secretary. Is disappointed he was not allowed to march on Edlabad. Applies to be Political Agent at Bhopal. Believes that as Tantia has crossed the Nerbudda, Sir Hugh will return, and the force will break up. Sindwah is considered very unhealthy. Copy of reply, it would be a great thing if Tantia and the Rao Sahib's forces could be finally dispersed. The Delhi Shahzada Feroze Shah with a strong force of cavalry has escaped from Oudh, and may cause disturbances in Central India again. There is little chance that he will be appointed to Bhopal.
4563. Letter from Mr J Gash, Allahabad, Dec 1858. Submits a Memorial of his services during the Mutiny under Havelock and Neill; he has received no compensation for the loss of his entire property; asks for civil employment. 4 other papers about Gash. Copy of reply, his Memorial has been sent to the Military Department. Mr Muir has no papers about his claim for compensation. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 7903.
4564. Letter from Major H Drury, 45th Madras Native Infantry, Trevancore, Dec 1858. Has sent a copy of his work 'The Useful Plants of India'. Copy of reply, grateful acknowledgment.
4565. Letter from the Honourable E Drummond, Accountant General to the Government of India, Calcutta, Dec 1858. Reports the despatch of a telegraph asking for the actual amount of the Governor General's expenses on tour from Apr 1858 to date, and estimated expenses to 30 Apr 1859. Telegraph Message Received number 928; Telegraph Message Sent number 559.
4566. Letter from Mr W Boate, Allahabad, Dec 1858. Returns thanks for his appointment as Extra Assistant Commissioner in Oudh. Copy of earlier letter, notifying him of his appointment. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4379, 4559, 4571.
4567. Letter from Mr R Montgomery, Chief Commissioner Oudh, Lucknow, Dec 1858. Sends copies of 2 letters from Mr R N King, showing how the rebels got out of Oudh, a great misfortune. The Commander-in-Chief has gone to Fyzabad to cross the bridge there, instead of crossing at Byram Ghat. 2 cavalry regiments are in pursuit of the rebel cavalry, and will follow them to Central India if necessary.
4568. Copy of reply to J W Hayes Esquire, Bangalore, Dec 1858. Returning thanks for his letter and the copy of the 'Bangalore Herald'.
4569. Letter from Messrs Thacker, Spink and Company, Calcutta, Dec 1858. Send the prospectus of 'Sketches and Incidents of the Seige (sic) of Lucknow' by C H Mecham. 1 anna stamp. Copy of reply, the Governor General will take 3 copies. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4625.
4571. Copy of a letter to General Lord Clyde, via Lucknow, Dec 1858. Notifying him that Mr W Boate has been appointed Extra Assistant Commissioner in Oudh. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4379, 4559, 4566.
4572. Letter from Mr R Temple, Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of the Punjab, Camp, Sealkote [Sialkot], Dec 1858. About Dr Smith, Civil Surgeon of Lahore; and about shawls commissioned by the Private Secretary. Copy of reply, Smith will be confirmed as a full surgeon. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 4262, 4312, 5749, 5804, 5813.
4573. Letter from Mr H Montgomery, Chief Commissioner Lucknow, Dec 1858. Does not believe that the Nana accompanied the fugitives, whose flight was sudden owing to the men quarrelling with Herpershad and others, and to the approach of British troops. It is said that a refusal by the Begum to allow them to cross the river if beaten induced them to fly. The Nana was 40 miles off to the north of the Gogra.
4574. Letter from Mr W Glynn, Deputy Collector, Futtehpore, Dec 1858. Asks the Private Secretary to assist him to gain a place in the Oudh Commission. 1 enclosure Copy of reply, he has been appointed Assistant Commissioner 2nd class in Oudh.
4575. Letter from Mr F C Marshall, Assistant Executive Engineer, Buxar, Dec 1858. Encloses a letter from Major General Sir J Inglis, and trusts that his services during the defence of Lucknow may be rewarded with an appointment. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence nos. 3841, 4474, 4598.
4576. Letter from Brigadier J Christie, Commanding at Dinapore, Dec 1858. Observes that it is now unnecessary for him to suggest a reward for Mr Boyle, as he has heard from the Commissioner of Patna that Boyle (by order of the Lieutenant Governor) is to be given an estate yielding 10,000 Rupees a year, rent free, for life, with possession to his heirs and successors upon a certain payment. Christie considers that the reward is out of proportion to the service rendered.
4579. Letter from Sir T Seaton, Commanding the Futtehghur District, Shahjehanpore, Sep 1858. Asks for instructions about the treatment of mutineers; is averse to indiscriminate vengeance. Draft reply from Mr Muir.
4580. Letter from Mr R B Chapman, Under Secretary to the Government of India Home Department, Calcutta, Nov 1858. Forwards a copy of a letter from Mr Spears, Mandalay, to Major Phayre, with special reference to the paragraph about M D'Orgoni; and sends extract from Phayre's letter, about the inadvisability of allowing D'Orgoni to return to Burma. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4581.
4581. Letter from Mr C Beadon, Secretary to the Government of India, Home Department, Calcutta, Nov 1858. Asks for an answer about M D'Orgoni; there does not now seem to be any reason to prevent him going to Ava. Sends copy of a letter from Major Phayre about a disturbance created by Men Loung in Twantay, where Mr Lewis was taken prisoner. Messrs Hamilton and Company have got the silver howdah ready, but he supposes it is not now wanted. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4580.
4582. Letter from Lieutenant W Gompertz, 16th Madras Native Infantry, Mangalore, Nov - Dec 1858. Asks for a civil appointment in the Mysore Commission. 1/2 anna stamp. Copy of reply, request refused. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4711.
4583. Letter from Sir R Hamilton, Agent to the Governor General for Central India, Indore, Dec 1858. Reports that Tantia Topi and Rao Sahib are in the Jungle; names the route likely to be taken by the Nana to join Tantia; hopes that General Napier will deal with the mutinous sepoys in Jaklone Jungle. He believes that Sir H Rose has sent in his despatches. Reports the death of Captain Hore. The Hyderabad Cavalry are not to be trusted alone. Gives the movements of the several British Commanding officers. His doctor advises him to leave India by the first steamer in April; he would therefore wish to be set free on 15 March.
4584. Letter from Major G W Stokes, Commanding the Pathan Horse, Roy Bareilly, Dec 1858. Submits a statement of the services rendered by the Pathan Horse, in the hope that they may be given part of the Batta given to those troops that were present at the taking of Delhi and Lucknow. (Letter no longer enclosed); Copy of reply, his letter has been transferred to the Military Department.
4585. Letter from Mr F B Morris, Allahabad, Dec 1858. Renews his application for employment, and suggests he be appointed Superintendent of Forests in Dehra Dun. 2 letters, Copy of reply, the post is not vacant.
4586. Letter from Mr A Brandreth, Settlement Officer, Jheelum, Dec 1858. Submits a scheme for the disposal of officers belonging to disbanded and disarmed regiments. With some remarks on the settlement of certain districts in the Punjab. Copy of reply, Private Secretary has received his letter, but hesitates to show it to the Governor General because of some of the allusions to Lord Canning Remarks on the settlement of the Punjab.
4587. Copy of a letter to R H Davies Esquire Magistrate, Benares, Dec 1858. Asking him to distribute their pay to the crews of the 'Sonamookee' and Bhanleah No 3.
4588. Letter from Lieutenant Colonel H Drummond, 1st Bengal European Light Cavalry, Allahabad, Dec 1858. Asks to be appointed Agent to the Governor General at Moorshedabad. Copy of reply, request refused, there is no vacancy.
4589. Copy of letter to Major G W Williams, Commissioner of Police, Mirzapore, Dec 1858. Sending the evidence regarding the Cawnpore massacre; Private Secretary hopes Fitchett's testimony will be corroborated by the evidence of the other drummers mentioned, in which case the narrative may be regarded as decisive.
4590. Copy of a letter to the Head Assistant Electric Telegraph Office, Allahabad, Dec 1858. Asking that a copy of 'Mail News' may be sent to Mr Edmonstone.
4591. Letter from Mr C B Thornhill, Commissioner of Allahabad, Dec 1858. In reply, there would be great difficulty in raising the amount required for the cost of watering the road leading from Mr Masson's house to the Fort. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4592.
4592. Letter from Mr P B Reid, Deputy Collector, Allahabad, Dec 1858. Returns thanks for the Governor General's contribution to the road watering fund. Copy of earlier letter offering 100 Rupees if the scheme is carried out. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4591.
4593. Letter from Major H L Thuillier, Deputy Surveyor General, Calcutta, Dec 1858. Has despatched a copy of an engraved map of the Western Provinces of Hindustan.
4594. Letter from Mr F D Forsyth, Secretary, to the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, Lucknow, Dec 1858. The Chief Commissioner would be grateful if the appointment of Mr Glynn to Oudh could be speedily arranged, as he is well acquainted with the whole question of the Salt Revenue. Copy of reply, Glynn has been asked to join at once Mr Boate has also been appointed 3rd class Extra Assistant. See also Private Secretary’s Correspondence no. 4605.
